    Just a comment on the lengthening nail bed… I too recently changed the shape of my nails completely with a little extra care. And I’m 66! (Where were you when I was 20? 🤣)
    I had the same kind of shell-shaped nails that went flat and splayed out at the end. They had ridges that split horizontally mostly, but sometimes also vertically. They were super thin and often ripped into where the nail was still attached and had to be filed right back, thereby shortening the nail bed.
    From your past videos I learned how to remove cuticles and gently push back the nail fold. I started using a glass nail file, to take hair, skin and nail supplements, and to use a protective coat of nail polish. When the nails started to grow stronger, they stopped being flat at the top: and, as they weren’t breaking, the attachment to the nail bed at the top gradually crept up, resulting in that longer looking nail bed. For a while you could actually see a darker line where the nail was newly re-attaching. Regular cuticle removal and gentle pushing back of the nail fold has also made the nail bed longer.
    My nails are continuing to look narrower, straighter at the sides and more curved and I realise that the shape of my nails was caused by the nail being too thin to hold a curve once past the nail bed. So more from lack of nurture than nature.
    I hope this encourages others to persevere. You started this. 🤗 Many thanks. ❤️

      Thank you! I’m 29 and have struggled with a similar thing since I was very young. I was a terrible nail biter for years and have stopped for a while, but I was worried I caused serious damage. I just have to get more serious about proper cuticle remover and adding a strengthening polish. What do you recommend?

    • @brooklynsbaby4367
      @brooklynsbaby4367 Год назад +5

      Interesting. I was a nail biter, once I started polishing my nails, I stopped biting them - the nail beds expanded in length, the nails had a noticeable curvature and they could get quite lengthy. Then, overtime they started peeling and cracking so I switched to gel manicures, then they've been flat ever since. I've been getting proper overlays and they've gained some curvature but only on some fingers xddd.

      Yes, but you can't make the white part start closer to your fingertips, which is what many of us are stuck dealing with. I fully admit to being insanely jealous of people with the kind of long nail beds that have the white starting near the fingertips. Lucky bleeping bleeps. Stupid genetics. And yes, it IS genetic.

    I started following Anna's advice by:
    - pushing back the proximal nail fold bit by bit every day
    - massage my nails and the skin around my nails with the essie cutcicle oil
    - apply clear nail polish/strengthener
    - file my nails into a soft oval shape
    After 2 weeks, my nail bed seems to be longer and more slender. I believe that it's actually from pushing back the skin around me nails and therefore causes an illusion of longer nail bed. You'd be surprised by how much you can push back. Of course, be gentle, take your time and slowly you'll get there.
    Thank you so much Anna! Your advice has changed my nails for the better! I used to not shape my nails and let them grow out really long until I cut the free edge super close to the skin again. I also had a lot of hang nails and ripped skin around my nails as well. I tried using gel polish and after removing them, my nails felt super dry and damaged. After following your advice, my nails have never looked this good before!!!

      Same. My nails are bendy, thin, with short nail beds, and a slightly triangular shape that doesn’t look good filed straight/square. I’ve come to accept that they will never look like some nail bloggers’ nails that have long nail beds that look good filed square just like I will never be 5’10” with naturally curly red hair or be able to wear empire waist dresses without looking like I’m pregnant. I just have to take good care of them and file them a little rounder/oval so that they look the best that they possibly can with what genetics gave me.

    I really believe that keeping polish on flat/aging dry nails stabilizes the moisture level in the nail plate reducing the soaking and dehydrating cycles that occur. This allows the flattened nail to return to a more pronounced C curve throughout the nail plate. Or at least that is the experience with my own old flat super dry nails. ;) Can't wait to see followup pics!

      Nail polish raises the moisture level in the nails. As long as you are wearing it though.
      Wearing polish (on some type of nails) can be damaging to it's surface (from my experience). The damaged surface will dry out easier (and it will soak upon water faster) because the cells are not being held together properly letting the water in and out very easily.
      The interesting thing is that super dry nail would be more curved.
      Nail polish itself is a very very flexible coating so it wouldn't be holding the nail tighter.
      It's all super fascinating!

    Oh Anna! ❤️ Thank you for sharing my nails and giving the advice. I would never have thought that shaping the nail would slowly make the actual nail change shape. I have always liked the square look of nails but now I think that hasn't helped at all. My Mother and oldest child have amazing long nail beds and its a pity I didn't inherited those!
    I have been watching all the videos and have started to make changes to my routine with adding jojoba oil after washing my hands (when I can!) and a nail oil after my shower in the morning and at night etc. I am yet to purchase a urea based hand cream, and will be doing so today as my normal hand cream isn't as moisturising around my nails as I need.
    I will definitely take some updated photos in a few weeks (Ive only started doing a better routine on my nails a week or so ago) and will email you the photos. I can tell you now I have already seen a big difference to the skin around the nail just in this short time (and wow, I didn't realise how my skin and nails looked close up!!! 🤣). Regarding the blue dot, I will also see if the care routine makes it go away. Its seems more than a coincidence that its on the same finger as the ridge in the nail.
    I bought the Malaga Scientifique K+ but now not sure if I should use it or not. I've only put it on my nails once or twice. I will hold off from using it and just do the care routine that you suggested before putting on hardeners etc as these might do the opposite if used unnecessarily!!
    Thanks again! Such incredible knowledge that you are freely passing on. ❤️

    I used to have lovely long nails when I was in my teens & twenties. I always got compliments, some thought they were false because they were too perfect!
    As the years went on, I stopped taking care of them. I recently found a photo of how they looked. They were flat, had verticle lines & although they were long, they just didn't look very 'pretty' or strong.
    I then started wearing a nail strengthener every day & using creams & oils daily, I also regularly filed them. Today I can absolutely say that my nails look completely different to the pics from before. So yes! As was said in this video, just looking after them & giving them some regular TLC can make a big difference.
    Be patient. Before you know it you'll forget how your nails used to look, until you see an old photo of them again! 😃😉

      I think I have to really stress that because that is the "secret". People are often disappointed because their manicure didn't turn out as perfect as some IG photo. The safe way just takes some time and it gets better as the time goes by. On contrary- invasive manicures can make the nails "look" better right away, but the health of the nail and the skin wasn't addressed and corrected and in the long run they might end up with more problems than they started with

    I can attest to nail polish changing the nail shape. I have noticed that every time i remove nail polish for more than few hours my nails start to flatten out again, even to a point where corners of my nails get really painful! I used to have really flat nails that would be razor-thin and would bend and break really fast so I could never grow them to even a millimeter long. Also, nail beds used to be really short. I also was a nail-biter as a child. For the past few years, I have been regularly applying nail varnish, even if it's just a clear coat, and as long as i do, my nails stay curved. Also, as I regularly gently push my skin back while cleaning up cuticles and apply nail polish close to the skin, my nails elongated just a little bit, but enough to make them look nicer. I do need to introduce gentler manicures as I used to smooth the ridges for the nicer varnished look but after watching this I will definitely go gentler and ditch the buffing!

    I think some of the extension of the nail bed length comes from the gentle pushing back of the proximal nail fold that happens from regular manicures and putting oil on the skin. It also looks like in her before picture that skin is a bit puffy and may have had some inflammation that went away and helped the nail bed look longer.

    • @marina_nanana
      @marina_nanana 2 года назад +2

      I would also advise people with short nail beds (like mine) to be very very gentle when cleaning under them so the skin under the nail at the free edge doesn’t get pushed back and make them look even shorter.

I purchased the Germanicure glass file and cuticle stick. Can you show how to use these tools please? I probably got ahead of myself because I see later you use the wooden stick and metal file. I want to make sure I use the glass tools correctly. Thank you again for this information…..I’m hooked!

Do you have any tips on how to make the nail beds longer / less hard skin in the sides without cutting the cuticles I feel like over file to make them narrower and there’s still over grown nail inbedded in the side of my nails (especially my right ‘rude’ finger as I am right handed) I feel like I’ve never had nice pretty nails and hands they always look so ‘masculine’ compared to feminine hands

There was a VERY sharp pencil that i ran into accidentally and it stabbed me through my skin. I feel like it sort of tattood me... if thats possible. Idk what other things can mark us for life like this, but maybe me sharing will bring up something similar, like an injury with something that deposited color, and solve your mystery?🤔💜💜💜

      Hi there :) Thank you for your question!
      I usually recommend leaving polish overnight between polishing and doing an oil soak or using Rescue RXx.
      Oil can help nail polish itself by plasticising it, any nail coating will benefit from oil (other than hard gels maybe) but polish is porous and oil will help it to a degree.

    YT just sent me down this rabbit hole and I am shocked that these nails and cuticles look just like mine. I have learned that my nails (which constantly tear like paper) are “eggshell nails.” I have nails that grow at an able where the left side is slower growing than the right side. Once my nails reach a short length threshold, the nails start to spoon downwards or start to fold upwards. Each mail has a different growth pattern but most of the growth patterns are abnormal.
    I also have at least one periungual wart. That wart has resisted medical removal techniques. This client’s video of her blue dot finger shows a texture and slight color difference around the base if the nail and the reddened area includes the blue dot, that skin change is identical to my periungual wart. My skin ariund the sides always looks callused (and the ca,Luis is somewhat worse in the wart finger). I have hangnails on nearly every finger, even when highly maintained, I am hoping your channel can help me over time. This is a great channel concept. Thank you.

Many patients have what we call an amalgam tattoo in the gingiva tissue or other places in the gums from when we dentists used amalgam for the silver fillings, and when a drill by a mistake slipped when working with amalgam, it now is sitting under the skin as a tattoo after the little wound is healing up.

    So. I have always been under the assumption that nail polishes dry the nail out. Because the air and moisture cannot get to the mail. Same for oils and lotions. I know you said clear nail polish. Is that somehow different from other nail polishes? I intend to do what you suggest here. Are there any clear nail polishes that you recommend? Preferably something I can just pick up at the drug store or grocery store?

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  2 года назад +5

      You are partially right.
      Here how it goes:
      Wearing nail polish definitely raises moisture level in the nail plate.
      There is a steady flow of moisture from the nail bed and nail polish "traps" it to a degree.
      Some people (or better, some type of nail plates) experience some surface damage when wearing polish for extended amount of time (I believe that has to do with polish bonding tightly with the nail plate, bonding tighter than the nail plate is bonded with itself).
      This also could have to do with LACK of oil that the nails would normally receive from the body (hair/skin).
      Surface damage "opens up" the nail cells, lack of oil means lack of "glue" holding the cells together and then the nail cells have hard time holding on to the moisture in the nail.
      On top of it nail polish removers can dry out the nail and skin around the nails, although to less degree... it's just easy to blame removers.
      Water is a solvent too and we are exposed to way more water during the day than to polish remover once a week.

    My middle finger has a permanent piece nail that’s shorter than the rest and grows separately (it looks like a hang nail but it’s not skin). It can fall off by its own but it always grows back. Do you know why?

  • @sherric7860
    @sherric7860 2 года назад

    My nails are pathetically thin and weak because of genetics. Mine will always have a bigger c curve and be less flat with polish. The longer they get, the more pronounced this is. Of course, the white part is white because it isn’t getting oil from the skin, so it’s drier. There is a little wicking that can happen. The longer the nail, the more they will curl at the tip because it’s drier on the tip. I learned that from Ana Seidel, owner of My Bliss Kiss. By the way, she doesn’t call her oil cuticle oil because we aren’t hydrating the cuticle but the skin.

    Hello Anna and thanks for your very helpful videos as usual 🥰 I have 2 questions: 1) you recommend wearing at least a clear nail polish, can it be worn on a regular basis (everyday, or almost) or is it better to have a break from nail polish a few days after you remove it, leave the nails bare for a few days and then re-apply it? 2) can oils be applied also when I wear nail polish? Do they penetrate the nail anyway even with polish on? Thanks so much!! 🤗

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  Год назад +1

      1) it depends on the condition of the nails and why you want to wear it. I need to know more :)
      2] oil doesn't penetrate the nails through the polish but it might help to plasticize the polish and it's good for the skin around the nails so highly recommended after each hand wash

    I may be able to answer the blue dot question! If you've been stabbed by an ink pen, it will inject the ink into your skin like a tattoo. I have two like that. One on my hand from when I reached into my school bag and the pen was pointed upward, and another on my foot, where I stepped on a pen. The same can happen with a mechanical pencil with the graphite, too.

      Simple! Ask them which tool they are using to remove cuticle. If they show you nipper- run. If they show you cuticle pusher that's great. But 99% salons cut that skin. Because most of people don't properly care for their nails and this and cutting a quick fix. Just like a pill for a headache.
