My husband died 10 weeks ago today, this was one of our favorite songs, We did dance on the shore, We loved on the shore, We sailed past Many shores, We lived & love the sea. I will always love you Roger.
It has now been just short of FOUR years. The memories such as this are what has carried me through all the sleepless night and the tear filled days. I wouldn't change a thing. He was the best husband I ever could have had. I love you and will join you some day. Thank you for your love. Roger you are my one and only.

One summer vacation my coal miner Dad took the family on a trip to DC. One evening we boarded a ship that took us to an amusement park via the Potomac River. On the ship was a live band that played like Big Band music. My younger sister and I knew that Stranger on the Shore was Mom's favorite so we went up the a man in the band and asked if they would play it. They did a great job. Mom was surprised and loved it. A memory of a summer evening in the early sixties.

This song was playing at an 8th grade dance and Paul walked straight to me and asked me to dance. I'm 74 and still cherish that memory. In 2020 during covid, my father had the very rare allergic reaction of Malignant Hyperthermia (MH) during an operation. At the time, five chief physicians/surgeons didn’t understand what was was happening. For four weeks he was in intensive care. I was granted to be able to visit him in total of three times. Out of the times, his eyes were open in two scenarios. I played this song for him once while he was “awake”. It was the song I remembered he listened to the most on cassette while driving with me as a child. I never got to asked him what other music/tracks he liked. I’m glad he got to show me this and that I got to played it for him one last time.

My dad could whistle this song and sound just like the clarinet! I grew up attending world war 2 reunions with him and I can't count the times I sat around tables with some of the greatest heroes in history listening to their stories while a live Big Band played this song. It is the soundtrack of a generation that has vanished into the past and when it plays I see them laugh and smile and dance again.

When I was a lot younger I thought the clarinet was a rather screechy instrument then I heard Acker Bilk play this and it turns out that in his hands it is one of the most beautiful sounds of all, truly one of the greatest talents he is greatly missed.

My granma loves Acker Bilk, she plays the clarinet. When I was a baby I loved this song, had it on a little cassette player and for a period of time I'd listen to it every night. It's such a weirdly sad and happy song. How can it be both? It is though.

***** The Clarinet does have a longing mournful tone, as if reminiscing or wishing for something that has been lost. The lyrics are literally a person standing on the shore pleading "my love return" while watching them sail away. Metaphor for a lover's leaving, breaking up, divorce, death? Probably something along those lines.
As for the WWII connection, I don't think so. The song was released in October 1961. A generation after the war, and a time of peace and economic prosperity in the US.
Trivia: If you are a fan of "Mad Men" you might notice that this song keeps recurring in the soundtrack. It is associated with the baby that Peggy gave up for adoption early in the series.

Lloyd Cearley You speak of course of the fallacy of intent. That for any work of art, be it poetry, prose, or song, the artist's intent is irrelevant, only the experience of the reader / listener has any meaning. The deconstructionist views any work of art as if it were Schrödinger's cat. It is somehow meaningless until it is "experienced." Thus any meaning can be assigned to anything. I did not miss the OP's point, I disagree with it.

I was overseas [USN] when this song came out. I fell absolutely in love with it cause it epitomized how I felt, ‘a stranger on the shore’. I told my Dad about it [who was an accomplished clarinettist, not as good as Acker though] and unbenounced to me he went out and bought the record and the sheet music to ‘Stranger’. When I came home from overseas, Dad told me to sit down in the living room. He put ‘Stranger’ on the stereo system and came into the living room playing his clarinet along with Acker. Simply beautiful and I cried ! I love that song so much and get tears in my eyes every time I hear it. Reminds me of my Dad who I miss so much ! Thank you Acker (up in heaven) for this beautiful instrumental !

When my wife Carol was alive, we were watching a classical music concert on TV -- back when they used to broadcast those -- and they were playing a clarinet concerto. Carol played the clarinet in her high-school band. She said, "Honey, if I had known that there was serious music for the clarinet, I would have taken it more seriously." Remembering that conversation, I wish that I had had this record available so she could hear what Acker Bilk did with the clarinet. The low-register notes on his clarinet absolutely dissolve me.

+Old Dominion Viking swab Thanks for the kind thoughts. Also thanks for reminding me of Henry Cuesta. I don't watch Lawrence Welk anymore, and I forgot about him. I don't know; maybe the clarinet doesn't have the right sound for pop or rock; indeed the only song I can think of in rock-and-roll's history where the clarinet even made itself known was Acker Bilk's recording. And it will never appear in today's "music," if you can even call that music And yes, Carol and I had the same tastes in music. We were die-hard classical music lovers!

+Old Dominion Viking swab Maybe 25 years ago, I heard the mantra of the modern musician: If you can't play good, at least play loud! That goes for singers also: If you can't sing, then do so loud. And I agree about RUclips. I just put together a huge collection of my favorite songs from 1942 ( my birth year) through 1970. There are a few songs after 1970 that I like, but not many. But there was a lot of great stuff in the 40s, 50s, and 60s. Have a great day.

+skippytroll When Carol and I had that conversation, I had forgotten completely about Acker Bilk's recording. He was almost the perfect example of what could be done with a clarinet. No offense taken; indeed, you made some good points.
