  • The behind the scenes TV stories you wouldn’t have known - from the people who were there.
Today, in our archival conversation, Jack Larson and Noel Neill talk about shooting "All that Glitters' - The final episode of the Adventures of Superman TV series where Lois and Jimmy get super-powers.
Noel's visit with George Reeves before he died. The season that never happened. what happened AFTER George Reeves died. The crazy story of Superman Jimmy Olsen spin-off that ALMOST happened - and why it didn’t.
Plus - a bit about the -believe it or not - Superpup pilot and the Superboy pilots that never made it to series.

My brother and I watch Adventures of Superman every time it came on television. Now that my younger brother has passed away for quite a few now! I think of my younger brother while I'm watching The Adventures of Superman. And I smile often while watching Superman I'm thinking of my brother. Sometimes I set my alarm clock for 5:30 a.m. so I can get the 6 a.m. Adventures of Superman. I am 74 years old and I still enjoy watching The Adventures of Superman. I remembered more of Noel Neill then I did a Phyllis Coates. They were both wonderful actresses playing Lois Lane:-) I still remember getting my Superman t-shirt and my brother and I both wore them at the same time:-)

I had celebrated my ninth birthday the month before George Reeves died. Now, this was 1959, a much more INNOCENT time than now and I had grown up on a farm in a small town in Ohio anyway so, to me, Superman was not ONLY my favorite show but he was REAL. As real as Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny and so on, you know, and I could not wrap my head around the fact that he was dead. My dad had taken upon himself the job of putting down the morning Gazette nd telling me and I naturally thought he was joking.
Then it finally sank in and I mourned for a VERY long time.
George was so great in that role and so believable (especially to us kids) that his death left a hole in our hearts. For many of us it was our first experience with the death of someone we'd FELT as though we had known and had certainly come to love.
Thank you so much for posting these interviews with Noel and Jack. Phyllis was more like the first incarnation of Lois Lane...the one that appeared in the early comic book installments and the radio show. Downright vicious to Clark.
Though that began to change just before Phyllis left the series.
Noel was the Lois we LOVED.
And, for me, Jack will always be the definitive Jimmy Olson!

I was only 5 when _George Reeves_ passed. I think I founded out that he had passed a few years later. When my parents explained to me about death and dying.
I also learned that _Lou Costello_ had died the same year. I love " _Abbott & Costello_ " especially when they met " _Frankenstein"_ 😂. Being a Catholic and a firm Believer
in *GOD* , I knew that these two men although dead, Live again up in Heaven! So it wasn't that hard on me that these two men are gone... *Faith will get you through it all!*
I know.... It got me through the loss of my _Parents and kid brother, amongst my Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, and friends_ ... ⛪✝🙏🏽

George Reeve's is the Superman I grew up with as a kid. Discovered the show in syndication when I was five years old. It didn't have the special effects of the later versions, and George wasn't as muscular as some of the other actors who would don the cape, but he had a way of carrying himself like he was Superman that somehow made you ignore the cheap special effects and the recycled footage. Also his Clark Kent was not an over the top wuss, which is my main complaint with the Christopher Reeve version. Not blaming Reeve, he gave the performance the director wanted, and you can't argue with the popularity of the films, then and now. But I preferred George Reeve's portrayal of Clark Kent. His Clark came across as a bit of an everyday man, not playing afraid of his own shadow, or stammering, and every once in awhile catching himself acting a little too much like Superman and having to quickly dial it down. Even without the grant special effects, the way he acted as if he were indestructible was what sold him as the character. Christopher Reeve had this same quality when playing Superman. He really nailed that part of the role.
Dean Cain possibly played the best Clark Kent up until his time in the role. I think he was a little better as Clark then he was as Superman. The best comparison is to watch the 2nd Season episode, it's either called "Terror In The Sky" or "Panic In The Sky". A half-hour episode with George Reeve's. Maybe the best episode of the series. A giant asteroid is headed for Earth and Superman is the only one who can possibly save Earth. Lois and Clark did an episode in it's first season, I believe it was called "All Shook Up" with the same premise. In both episodes Superman is injured when he tries he hits the asteroid at full speed and fails to stop it. In both episodes he barely makes it back to Earth and has amnesia, not remembering he is Superman. I recommend these episodes back to back, comparing Reeves' and Cain's performance. It really highlights the differences in their versions of Superman.

'look - up in the sky....it's a bird, it's a plane....strange visitor from another planet....truth, justice, and the American way.' i used clothespins to attach a towel to my tee shirt, then ran around the house with my arms extended, humming the theme they played whenever superman flew. jack larson was perfect as jimmy, i thought noel neill was wonderful, but even as a young boy i recognized the spunk and independence of phyllis coates. she was my favorite lois of all.

I do not blame Jack Larson for turning down the offer to play Jimmy Olsen after George Reeves died in 1959. Larson, and the cast and crew, were still mourning the loss of Reeves yet studio executives only thought of making money by using clips of Reeves from previous episodes and intergrading them in a Jimmy Olsen show. Also remember that the actors on 'Adventures of Superman' were paid peanuts along with having contracts that prevented them from moving on to other movie or TV roles. As Larson and Neill mentioned at the end of this interview the company in charge of the series came up with two flops; Superpup and Superboy (1961).

Larson mentions the Jimmy Olsen comic book, a series that lasted from 1954 through the mid 1980's (renamed "Superman Family" in the late 70's as an anthology title for the solo stories of the Superman cast of characters, including Jimmy Olsen, Lois Lane, Supergirl, etc.) It's a given that Jack never received a dime from the millions of dollars in sales of the comic book during its 30+ year run; not even an "appreciation" plaque nor even so much as a patronizing pat on the back by any of the comic book industry big-wigs who owed a decent portion of their salaries to the success of the Jimmy Olsen comic -- whose title character was modeled after Jack Larson!
