I nursed one of the crematorium workers at the end of his life in Sydney 1992, he had written down his experiences in a book for his family and anyone who was interested , I read it and it was utterly horrific - the thing i remember most was when he opened the gas chamber doors to take the bodies to the crematorium they were in a pyramid shape and it was because they has clambered on each other to reach the last piece of air at the top of the room. When he was rescued the British told him they could send him anywhere in their colonies and he told them send me as far away as possible from Europe so they sent him to Australia

Couldn’t be more timely, with so much of the world’s complicity in the atrocities in Gaza and other conflicts, and us still going about our daily lives or even benefiting economically from carnage. Do you understand that this film is about the genocide of Jews! We 🇮🇱said *Never Again* and we meant it. Then came October 7th and the Hamas (Nazi) massacre. We are not going to let this happen again. The Israeli army is the most humane in the world. We gave Palestinian civilians 3 days notice and a safety corridor to evacuate before the war started with Hamas. Hamas inflates the number of casualties and does not distinguish between Hamas terrorists and civilians. The only atrocities in Gaza are the ones committed by Hamas against Israel, the hostages and the Palestinian civilians. *The more you know*

As the credits roll [and we see some contemporary images that relocate us in the "present"] it is immediately clear that this film enters the top echelons of "important" and "necessary" Holocaust films. We might be tempted to think the most dazzling, audacious and revealing cinematic works are in the past [Come and See; The Last Stage etcetera] but recent films like Son of Saul and (now) The Zone of Interest confront us with fresh insights into the hell of the camps. I can't help thinking Claude Lanzmann would approve of this film that scarcely [but for a few seconds] penetrates the walls to take us "inside". Locating the film outside is a feat of genius. For it is what we hear and glimpse over the camp walls that will leave us disturbed long after the film has ended.
I haven't been able to get this film out of my head since seeing it.

Ainda não me saiu do pensamento, posso dizer. Lembrei, de imediato, claro Hannah Arendt e A Banalidade do Mal.. e fica só este apontamento.
Filme a ver, penso, também pelo mundo global da atualidade.

I love how they did not really adapt the novel. Only took the title and the basic POV and instead filled it with the real life inspiration that is the Höß-Family. It's unconventional but so fitting and powerful eventually.

  • @rrraaasssmmmuuusss2759

I really liked that they included the story of Hans and Grethe - a fairy tale where two children gets lured by a witch, but they end up burning the witch (a jew) in an oven and steal the witch's treasure (invasion of countries) in order to fight "the evil" and they live happily ever after. It's a nazi's narrative and can be applied to the characters in the story who wants to vision themself living an utopian luxury life, but their fantasy will remain only a fairy tale after all.
