"Some books for my lovely self from my lovely self. " Love it!
Hahaha. Where’s the lie? 😉
Perfect Simon quote! He makes me smile every single time!
“One of my friends had a sheep on her lap the whole way through “ 😂 💚
It’s true 🐑
“I find aliens alienating.”👽😄 I’m with you on that.
Hahaha. I said what I said 😉👽
Some great books there! Once There Were Wolves is hauntingly wonderful. And perfect for this time of year. Enjoy!
I’m really looking forward to getting to it!
I have two space related books I loved! Beware though, not light. Everything you ever wanted, and How high we go in the dark.
❤️ your channel. Always informative and enjoyable. Cheekily gave you a mention in our first Newbie Tag video 🧐. P.s. Nice jumper... Might get me one 😊. P.s. again 🙄. "The Wheel is Spinning but the Hamster is Dead" sounds like a really super 'toilet book' 🤣🤣🤣. That did make me chuckle.
Stay safe and happy.
Oooh thanks for letting me know I shall have to check your channel out!
I love your book recommendations...but you have the best jumpers/sweatshirts!
Awwww thank you very much.
Hi, I lost you for a while, watching other types of videos. Glad that you appeared in my list again.
I’m glad I did too!!
Loved Loot and think it would be perfect for tired brains. (Don't worry about the boat.)
Blimey indeed, Ours sounds fascinating. Am a door stopper fan, how it can be a reading adventure to "live" with characters and places in a novel for a little longer.
Fifteen Wild Decembers is one of the lovely books I've treated my lovely self to recently. Have yet to read it. Was bitten by the Brontë bug at a tender age through Wuthering Heights. It was love at first read.
Loot I would definitely like to get to before the end of the year. Though am wondering if I should read The Tusk That Did The Damage first? Hmmm. Ours I might head to in early January as I am planning on taking a few weeks off just to get into the swing of the new year. Always good to treat your lovely self to lovely books.
what an incredible haul!!! the Welch is....boy oh boy are you in for a treat 👹
Ooooh can’t wait!!!
I love the Monica Ali book, great haul.
I’m really looking forward to reading her work and meeting her next week.
Catherine Chidgley is a great author and Pet really gets the New Zealand vibe (I’m a kiwi so qualified to opine haha) but my favourite of hers is definitely Remote Sympathy.
I was on a self imposed ‘No more books ‘till Christmas’ thing. Started on Saturday, after I had spent a whole evening moving my books round, to fit them in, then saw your mention of Pet, and I fell off the wagon, with a thud!
I think it will leap ahead of the TBR skyline.
Whoops, sorry to lead you astray. I am actually passing the blame onto my mother as she is the one who made me want to get Pet lol.
Once There Were Wolves is SO GOOD and I don't usually like books about twins because I am one and nobody ever really gets it right. Although the ending was a bit sad. But still SO GOOD!
It's a really good one to read in the fall and winter months, as well.
Ooooh thanks for letting me know and thanks for not giving away the ending, though giving a teasing hint.
As for spacey books I wonder if you've read The Hail Mary Project - it does have an alien but he's quite lovely. Our whole family listened to it and we all loved it and have got very different reading likes. Oh 'Remembrance' love that poem by Emily Bronte might need to have a look at that book. Ah Jane Harper - yes must get that one. Mind you I am still hooked on the Rivers of London ones and can't read anything else until I've finished that series. I did try something else in between and I don't think I gave it a fair read because I wanted to get back to Peter and the Godesses.
Ha, it is lovely when you have a series you really want to binge. Though so sad when you are all caught up waiting for the next one.
What would your top 20 desert Island Books be.? For your Savidge proment .
Ooh I like that as a question for a whole video itself, I think for a prompt that would mean we would have to read the 20 books and that might be a bit much in a month. Definitely saving this for a future video though!
I am also really looking forward to Fifteen Wild Decembers. What a terrific title ! That would be a fun video...books you think have especially wonderful titles. :)
It is a good title, perfect to be read in December I think.
These Sunday videos are such a treat because you keep me company while I’m cooking dinner! I’ve also just read Blackouts and am quite keen to read Orbital (it’s not out here yet). And I was sent a proof of Clear which made my week! Very excited for next year’s Savidge Prompts (must make time for my November and December picks) and for the new WP nonfiction list as well as the fiction list. Am happy to learn about upcoming releases no matter how far in the future they might be. And your tangents are always a delight!
Hahaha. You mean my tangents on my tangents, hehehe. I am getting very excited for next years reading prompts, very excited indeed. Delighted I kept you company while cooking, though where was my serving of that delicious dinner. Lol.
I'm excited for Ours by Phillip B Williams. Your video made me laugh out load a couple of times. I love your sweatshirt. Thank You😊
Always happy to bring a giggle or two to people as they watch, lovely to hear.
Hi Simon, ‘the apparition phase’ is one of the scariest books I’ve read; I highly recommend! ❤
Ooooooooh that thrills (and chills) me!!!!
I loved Migrations and still have to read Once there were wolves.
Last month I bought Prophet song and In ascension, Ravensong by TJ Klune, Cunning women by Elizabeth Lee, Days at the Morisaki bookshop, Just by looking at him by Ryan O’Connell, Hallowe’en party by Agatha Christie, Olive again by Elizabeth Strout, two Dutch children’s books, Love by Toni Morrison and I who have never known men by Jacqueline Harpman.
Oooh that's a lovely eclectic selection of books that you got. Lots on there I have enjoyed and a few I have on the TBR.
Hi Simon 🤓👋🏻
A very interesting collection 📚 & I’m esp interested in “Once There Were Wolves”🐺 there are a few more too, but I mustn’t get too distracted from my tall tbr pile 😬
Want to read ano by Monica Ali (read Brick Lane sooo long ago).
I’m 3/4 way through the compelling “Prophet Song” 👏🏻
I enjoyed listening to your ‘geography lesson’ !! (the views sound really scenic 👍) x
That geography lesson, good lord, sometimes I don't half waffle on... on many a tangent, ha!
I have Laura’s new book to read. I remember that collab video you did ❤
💜💜💜
Ooh I actually just read Clear. I won’t spoil anything, but I hope we see it on some prize lists next year!
*Loved* the chaos in this video 😂
Oh and for astronauty books, the new Samatha Harvey one Orbital sounds like it might fit the bill?
Hahaha it was Orbital that I mentioned that made me have the space reading whim. Loved it.
I wonder if maybe Clear could be too short for some prize lists, that seems to have been the case with a few of Davies previous books, she is such a great writer. Thank you for no spoilers.
Orbital - wow I am dumb lol
Clear - you’re right, it’s probably too short for the Women’s Prize. But the Booker seems to be perfectly happy with super shorties lately!
Love Careys Davis! Maupin sounds interesting too. I hope in your Australian order you picked up Lola in the Mirror by Trent Dalton (loved it, it's a favourite this year). I'm reading Stone yard Devotional by Charlotte Wood and I'm afraid it isn't The Weekend, Stone yard is interesting but so slow going, it keeps putting me to sleep....I really need to pick up Once there was wolves from my bookshelf, too many new releases from the library keep coming my way.
I didn’t get the Dalton no. I haven’t read any of his books yet and the price of your books (and the shipping) even with a good conversion rate it made. Also, in the nice possible way I have to ask, why did you tell me that about Stone Yard Devotional. It’s a pet peeve of mine when people slate a book someone’s excited to read and hasn’t picked up yet. I don’t know why people do it. I even ask people not to do it at the end of my videos.
@@SavidgeReads sorry Simon, I must stop tired commenting. I only meant to say Stoneyard was a slow read, it came off as a derogatory comment about the book, when I didn't intend it to be. I'm still reading it and becoming more involved with the writing as I go. As said, it's an interesting book. Falling asleep is more about not as many hours in the day as required and I just thought The Weekend was quite a quick read.
Jokingly, you know I'm not personally responsible for the cost of Aussie books, lol. Have you seen that the GBP v Aussie dollar conversion rate? Anything sold in GBP I have to double the Aussie $$ to buy. A 10 pound British book would cost me $20. Shipping costs kill us here too, we are a wee distance away. Since the pandemic, shipping can be 40 pounds or $80. Makes a 10 pound book, $90., to get into my hot little hands. If only ebooks were more fun to read, it would at least cut down on shipping costs. I love the feel of a real book 🙂
The two I have read on your list
The Exiles
Prophets Song ( now has audio book)
I love Aussie Noir.I’m currently listening to
Cover The Bones by Chris Hammer
Happiness Falls
The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store
March
My prompt was to read a backlist book from a favourite author. .
👋🍀📕☘️📚☕️📖🇮🇪
I think I have already got your prompt in the prompt jar of possibilities. If you want to suggest another feel free. Though nothing audiobook based, you know I don't love a fiction book on audiobook... though I admire your dedication to convert me. Hahahaha. I love Aussie noir too.
Read the Booker books and you might be invited. Sorry but not sorry. If you are invested you are invited. From an outsider who invests in reading, that is my no filter view. 😂😍😘
Wowsers.
I read Pet in October bc I thought it would be a different, but applicable candidate for spooky season ( it was) & it was your ma who sparked my interest.
I personally like hearing about books in any length of advance . Sometimes I get 2 birds w one scone exited that way bc I forget if it’s been hella advance notice & then excited all over again later.
I really liked Once There Were Wolves, but I’m obsessed w wolves and coyotes so came into biased .
Rouge sounds potentially awesome .
Blahdiggityblah , appreciate the video 📖🪱💚
So good to hear that you enjoyed Pet. I am planning on heading to it before the end of the year is out. I love wolves too, foxes most (especially as now have one living in the garden) but also love wolves. Would love to 'pet' one, speaking of Pet.
I really enjoyed ‘once there were wolves’, it felt very original to me.
So pleased to hear you enjoyed it, I’m really looking forward to it.
I read Once There were wolves last month and I loved it. Btw I am over halfway through the Familiars and it is really good. Thanks for the recommendation ❤
I am soooooooooooooo pleased that you are enjoying The Familiars. Do you know what, I need to read Stacey's most recent book (she has a new one next year) as I haven't and am in the mood. Good to hear you loved Once There Were Wolves!
I guess I am gonna pick Stacey Hall’s other books next. I literally had the Familiars on my shelves since it came out and I’ve never picked it up. Thanks again Simon 🌹
Hi Simon
Books about astronauts that are not overly sci-fi
Do You Dream of Terra-Two by Temi Oh - a group of teenagers are chosen to train to be astronauts for a decades long voyage. It looks at their relationships and how they manage the stress of the expectations.
The Lady Astronaut series by Mary Robinette Kowal starting with The Calculating Stars. This is a alternate history of the US Space program if women and PoC were included. The early 60’s setting is exceptional. I started with the short story The Lady Astronaut of Mars and I fell in Love. The space race with gender and racial politics thrown in.
Oooh thank you for these recommendations, thrilled, onto the list on my phone they go! They sound great, so will give them a whirl.
@@SavidgeReadsSimon, it only seems fair that I offer some recommendations as you are my favourite Book pusher, i mean reviewer. So many of my favourite reads have been on your say so. Enjoy!!!!
Scott from Gunpowder Fiction and Plot raved about Immortal King Rao, IIRC, and it was up against Trust/Demon Copperhead for whichever prize those both won.
Hah! I recommended Three Fires to your mum a couple weeks back. I think you'll like it as well, very sharp look historically at the effects of men behaving badly from a modern eye view.
Ooh good to see King Rao has had love elsewhere. And I have a feeling mum and I will both like the new Mina. I got the Rizzio one for her a while back. I’m on my way to meet mum now in London, though we’re both on self imposed book buying bans.
Prophet Song was great Simon.
I’m really looking forward to it.
Sci-fi recommendation: To Be Taught If Fortunate by Becky Chambers (or anything by Becky Chambers really!)
I read her first one when it was up for the Women's Prize. I can't remember much about it as I did that longlist that year in a rush. Maybe I should head back!
some possible prompts:
The title is the name of the main character
A book with a connection to your personal or family history
A lesser known work by a well known author
Have popped a couple of those into the prompts of possibility pot.
There was a great documentary on bbc N.Ireland about the Brontë Irish connection. Can’t remember what it was called but it would be on iPlayer. It’s presented by the daughter of the actor Ciaran Hynes
The Booker winner is announced on my 60th birthday.
Oooh happy birthday in advance!
Spouse chooses your next read
Seasonal cover
New to you author
Pandemic (2020-2021)backlist read
Have popped a couple of those into the prompt jar of possibility.
Read a book you think the other would adore. (ie Simon would read a Louise sounding book and vise versa)
Into the prompt pot of possibility it has gone.
For the set in space recommendation, can I suggest a graphic novel by Tillie Walden called On A Sunbeam. Love love love.
Beautiful story, great queer representation…I think you’d love it!
Oooh I’ll look that up thank you Emma! 🪐
Prompt : read a classic book you’ve always wanted to read but have never got to
Or
Read a book from childhood you want to revisit
Into the prompt jar of possibility it has gone.
I love deckled edges because they do not throw you off your page when turning, my only complaint about my American Viking hardcover edition of The Searcher by Tana French, the pages consistently skipped pages on turning, maybe I need to order an old fashioned rubber finger tip cover for turning pages. Mona of the Manor goes on the list. Best normal people in space Andy Weir's The Martian and the newer Artemis book, which was supposed to be made into a movie, but that was before shutdowns. I feel sorry for young actors because their careers may be over before things get back to normal, oh well, don't give up the day jobs, "more tea please." They just want to work while they are alive, being paid after they are dead is not a big issue for them.😅 Give us a break, at the present state of the world, we need some entertainment and movies made during 2020 were punishent enough to last several years. Get back to the bargaining table in good faith and reach an agreeent.
Oooh hooray a fellow deckled edge lover. I do really love them so much. I read The Martian and wasn't a fan, it felt like all the female characters were one dimensional and superfluous, for me. The Misogynistic Martian is what I called it hahahaha. Fingers crossed things turn around with the entertainment industry.
@@SavidgeReads Maybe that's why the main character in Artemis was a strong female. It is true that I don't remember anyfemale character in The Martian. The Space Book I tried tor read was Brightness Falls from the Stars, probably wrong title, by James Tiptree, Jr. (really written bya woman), it was not a success, too much ichy factor, same with Changing Planes by Ursula Leguin, ichy aliens. The Strike ended at midnight, now make some movies!
Prompt: Read a book by an author from a country you have always wanted to visit.
It is in the mix!
My prompt is to read the oldest book on your shelves
Into the prompt jar it goes.
Prompt: A book with a royal theme
Hahaha, I can just imagine my mums face if that was picked. Hahaha.
Prompt: Read a book set in Minnesota
It’s in the prompt pot!
@@SavidgeReads You are so … everything good! 🤓🤓🤓
How about reading a book published in the best year of your life? Also could do a book published in the worst year of your life….if it turns out to be amazing, then at least one thing about that year has been redeemed 😅
Ha. I wouldn’t have read the book in the worst year. Also I know what both mum and my worst years might be and I’m not sure we’d want to go back there mentally. Best year of my life… ooh that’s a tough one. I feel like every year gets better and the best is yet to come.
Did I just actually hear a Brit say blimey?! You mean it doesn’t just happen in books?! Eeeeee…. 😂
Book prompts…
A book with a disabled protagonist
A cover with a flower on it
A book with colored edge pages
A book with an animal in the title
A cover you really, really don’t like
A cover that you love so much you want to display it
Book by an indigenous author
I have popped a couple of these in the jar, couldn't do them all as might be a bit unfair on everyone else, loved them all though.
Prompt: boring I know but I like a book published the year you were born
Not boring at all, though I feel like we did it for 2022. I shall check and if not into the jar it will go.
I'm not into Alien plots either, i find them boring.
I don’t know if I would describe them as boring. I think my brain just can’t envisage a lot of it. Which is odd because I bloody love Doctor Who, I guess that’s a visual thing though.
Ooh, I love Doctor Who too, but I haven’t watched it lately.
