Oh I can’t wait for you to discover Jhumpa Lahiri, Simon. I just discovered her this Summer. Actually from a @csop video. I read Whereabouts. Loved it. And Interpreter of Maladies. What a treat.
📖 My favourite women in translation reads were Jawbone by Mónica Ojeda translated by Sarah Booker & Abigail by Magda Szabo, translated by Len Rix. Fabulous haul, lots to enjoy there.
Great vlog. I just read Cereus Blooms at Night! (Mootoo). 5 stars. I just couldn't stop reading this beautifully written story. I have to say that Mala's house makes Miss Havishsham's house look like nothing much. Recommended. Written in 1996, so, I assume most people have already read it. If not, read it!
Ha. That’s my favourite book of the year so far. Have mentioned it in a few videos, even dedicated a whole one to it! Very excited to read more Mootoo.
I hope our girl Lahiri doesn't let you down! I dont know what she folded into that book that swept me up so thoroughly, but I really really hope you like it too!! (also counts as a women in translation read in a twisty fun way haha) 📚💙💜💛
Absolutely loved Christopher Fowler's quirky Bryant and May mysteries and read them all. Such a sad loss. And far too young. Me too with the word search thing but on line. I haven't got time but - shrugs shoulders. Light Seekers sounds good. I'll put that on my maybe list, I reckon. OOOO Sherlock - Envious.
I absolutely adored the last translated book by Yu Miri, Tokyo Ueno Station, and recommend it wholeheartedly. I think it’s brilliant. I was so excited when I saw she had a new translated book out until… I saw it was 700+ pages long. I just can’t do it. But nothing will ever change how much I loved Tokyo Ueno Station. 🤷♀️ The only WiT month book I managed to read in August was also my favorite book of August and currently stands as my #1 book of the year to date: A Little Luck by Claudia Pineiro. Just fabulous. I have All Yours checked out on ebook from the library. I’ll be reading it this weekend!
I will get to A Little Luck at some point. I’ve heard lots of good things including from your good self. I have heard lots of mixed things about Tokyo Ueno Station but as I would love to read all the books by Tilted Axis at some point I’ll get to it in time. It’s interesting you loved her book so much but wouldn’t read another just because of the size. Could be double/triple/quadruple the joy.
@@SavidgeReads Yeah. I know it doesn’t make sense. But it’s how my brain seems to work. 🤷♀️ And we come back to only having so much time in life. Why not keep to the ones that have the best chance of being enjoyable for me?
@@mradcaqbdb oh totally. No judgement at all. I guess I would just assume if I loved one book I would probably love another. We’re all different and it’s all good. Lol.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Donal Ryan once you get to him! I have his The Spinning Heart on my shelf yet to read 🧡💛
I am hearing so much buzz about Vaster Wilds and Glutton. I want to read Julia but don’t feel like rereading 1984 so we’ll have to see how that goes! I know you are ambivalent about Ann Patchett so Tom Lake might not be for you but I adored it and was not at all sad at the end (other than it was over). I think a 5-star anticipated reads video would be interesting but only if you share how it goes once you actually read the books! And many thanks for those fun black and white asides! 💖📚
So many people recommended it I might read it in a vlog with In Memoriam and see how I get on with the most recommended books of the year… to me. Something a bit different.
When I first saw “Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands” by Kate Beaton, I thought, “Why would I want to read anything about the oil sands?” (insert snore here.) However, I’m glad I took a chance on it and I hope you’ll enjoy it, too. 🦆📚
@@SavidgeReads I am trying a science fiction. Star Bringer by Tracy Wolfe. Something different. Struggling to read but I still love books. 😊❤ glad u kept the NZ book. You can’t give Australia all the love 😅😅❤❤.
You must read this book very old book on my shelf 2003 author Pete Hamill " forever " is a must read very interesting I also think your mother would love.
@@SavidgeReads how funny! I often wait the 10 day shipping time from blackwells to the US just for the cover 😅 especially when I want the paperback before it’s been released here lol
That book Julia is it based on a character from 1984 by a modern writer? I just finished Holy Skirts by Rene Steinke, which had some almost voyeuristic sex scenes, but since it is a novel based on the life of Baroness Elsa of Dada Art Movement, especially her and Marcel Duchamp making a sex scene for an early film (don't know if all of it really happened), I think that was the idea.😊 My favorite drag queen character is from Midnight In the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt, have a signed copy but read long ago and now I'm not sure that I'm not remembering The Lady Chablis being interviewed by John Cusack (love him and his sister too) from the movie.❤ Have read and collected Patchett, particularly remember Taft and Bel Canto and I will read the new one Tom Lake. Good picture in the tourist book shop. I generally enjoy books written between the wars, so Persephone will appeal to me, I bought Memoirs of Hadrian by Marguerite Yourcenar during Women In Translation, does that count)? ❤❤❤📚
Not all Persephone books are between war but quite a few are. If you’re into that era highly recommend Shrines of Gaiety by Kate Atkinson. Recently read it and loved it. Julia is by a modern author yes, it’s out next month I think.
Excellent as usually Simon, and lots to look forward to reading this fall. I love the If I Survive You, and meet Jonathan Escoffery at the Vancouver Writers Festival last October. You didn’t mention The Fraud by Zadie Smith, so I wonder if you are planning to read it? It’s getting lots of buzz in Vancouver. Lesser Known Monsters of the 21st Century by Kim Fu is a lovely collection of short stories Canadian small press…and I am finally reading Fire Rush on yours (and your mum’s recommendation) and I’m loving it. I am doing a hybrid of reading and listening to the audio, which has all the reggae beats that add to the ambiance!❤🎉💛🩵🖤📚
I did the mixture of audio and book with Fire Rush, great way to experience it. Though I was more physical than audio as I struggle with fiction in my ears. I have Lesser Known Monsters on the shelves, have been eying some of this years Giller longlist two. Didn't mention The Fraud as I didn't get it in August, ha. I don't have a copy, I was told one was being sent but it never arrived, I am not too fussed as I haven't really 'got' Zadie's books, I have tried a couple. This one does sound more 'me', I am in no rush to pay £20 for it though!!

Meryl Streep reads the audio for Tom Lake, so I’m thinking of doing a read/listen combo!
