    One thing I am asked about a lot, is why certain fx blocks cannot be selected at times and also how we can get more processing power out of our Helix and HX Stomp. In this video I take a look at a couple of ways we can maximize our DSP usage and get the most out of our hardware units.
    If you would like to check out Ben Vesco's incredible DSP Allocation Chart, you can do so at the link below:

    Tip - Make sure to use the Noise Gate thats included on the INPUT block instead so you dont have to use an actual DSP using EFX block (if you usually use a Noise Gate in your presets)

    I have an HX Stomp. After having designed the Presets that I regularly use, running out of DSP became a non-issue. There are many ways to EQ the sound, get boost, gain, or distortion using the Amp and Cab Blocks, without having to use an additional dedicated effects Block.
    I also like many of Legacy Effects, such as Reverbs and Delays. I rarely find the need to run the signal in stereo or use Dual Amps. Blocks that do pitch modulation eat up DSP fast, so those require careful planning. Snapshots provide an additional way to easily get different sounds without needing additional Blocks.

    Already figured all this out. Still watched in case you knew something I didn’t. But great content. And I DID learn about that chart with the DSP values. Also, every video I watch from you pushes me at least one step closer to getting helix native. Thanx for all the work you put into this stuff!

    The Helix/HX Stomp requires the typical guitarist to rethink their idea of a pedalboard. Helix isn’t a device for laying out every single effect/preamp/cab on the same preset, like you would with a “normal” rig. You instead build your virtual board with what’s required for the gig/sound, and nothing more. Leave the rest to separate snapshots and presets. Once users realize this, DSP really becomes a non-issue and the power/versatility of Helix really opens up.

    Nice. My peeve is most presets I get are always loaded with stereo FX. I wish there was a simple way to flip a switch and convert it all to mono for live use or for those that don't do studio/PC stuff. I use the XLR outs to various feeds live so I do have to fix it all up before using. Maybe someday builders will release both mono and stereo versions like HX stomp or helix releases.

    The effects loop is the biggest DSP saver, assuming you have effects to put in it. Most people probably do.

    • @sjsphotog
      @sjsphotog Год назад

      Very true. If you have a actual pedal that is in the Helix for some of your Chrous or Delay or other Distortion pedals why not put them in the FX Loop and then you save at least 1 block od DSP right there. Use the full power of what you have at your fingertips

  • @nkondusov
    @nkondusov Год назад +1

    On this helix DSP allocation page, is it how much power it takes from one path? So, amp generaly takes around 40%, so can i use 2 amps on top line and 2 amps on bottow (for snapshots as an example. i will not really do this, but switching at least between clean and lead, and have 3-5 effects is what i want)?

  • @skyhorseprice6591
    @skyhorseprice6591 2 года назад +1

    I know most of you probably know this, but for those who do not, I've found that you can get ridiculous amounts of processing power by utilizing the full number of paths the Helix will allow. That is, takePath 1, pull down to Path 1B, then take the sum of 1A and 1B and run it down to Path 2, from which you create 2B and then out to the end. This allows me, because my whole approach to my tone is built around a super wide stereo image field, to pretty much run stereo effects after the amp and mono ones before the amp (always remember that if you place a mono block _after_ a stereo block or blocks, the mono block will collapse all the other blocks to mono).
    Another cool thing is to run two amps, one on Path 1 or 1A, the 2nd in path 2 or 2B. I usually pan amp 1 anywhere from 30% to hard left, and amp 2 30% to hard right. Now you can switch all your effects, like delays and pitch shift and modulation like flange/chorus/phase, to mono yet still have stereo sound! I really love out of synch ping pong delays, for example, but going full stereo can really tax your DSP if you also have two amps.
    So don't go stereo! Go mono. I like to put a delay after amp 1 and another, different delay, after amp 2. So as an example path 1a has a Line 6 Badonk with a simple delay in mono, while path 2a has a Solo Lead 100 with a transistor tape delay also in mono. Amp 1 is planned hard left, Amp 1 is hard right. Set the delay on 1a to, say, 300 Ms with feedback at maybe 15. Set the delay on 2a to a longer value like maybe 750 Ms, with feedback up around 40. What you should hear is a really clean ping pong effect, created by having different types of delays panned hard opposite each other, with truly breathtaking tonal dimension due to having two different types of delay set to widely varying delay length and repeats, plus you've got modern delay on one side and basically an echoplex on the other. If you work the magic a bit, you can create effects where it sounds like waves of ambience flowing into and emerging out of each other. It sounds HUUUUGE.
    You can experiment with juxtaposing effects from one side to another to create some super wide, massive tones that will make it sound like there are two guitarists playing together. And you won't have to fight the Gods Of DSP.

      @dominic18719 2 года назад +1

      Just be aware that the two "B" paths are break pathways that are then re-merged at the merge point.
      As an experiment, choose an empty preset, and place the Poly Capo on the "1A" path. Make sure your mix is 100%, and make the pitch something other than zero. When you play, you'll here your notes perfectly capoed to a different key. Now, move the Poly Capo down to the "1B" path. What you will now hear is the effect signal, mixed with the original signal.
      It's great if this is what you are looking for, but if not, there is a workaround. The Volume block uses very little DSP, so if you place a Volume on 1A, right after the split point, and the merge point right after it, and set the volume of that block permanently to zero, you will now be only passing through the 1B signal back to 1A.
      Hope this helps :-)

    without path2, can't you also split the signal on path 1, then on 1A path you set a volume gain = 0 to block the signal and on path 1B you put the amp model you like and merge back after ?

    Thanks for this. Back about 10 years ago, I bought the HD500, thinking I was good to go, but I didn't do my research, and just a few months later the HD500X was released....with more DSP....I was kicking myself. Fastforward a decade, after making the big purchase (Helix Floor), I feel like I might have made the same blunder.....will we see a Line 6 HelixX?????? ......arggghhh!!!!

    Ben vesco's website is great with a small exception - for the legacy effects he lists both mono and stereo % despite a large number being stereo only with regard to delay and reverbs. I had no idea why it wasn't adding up. I wish he removed the mono % from stereo only FX in the legacy category

  • @Dinozzo1995
    @Dinozzo1995 Год назад

    What's probably even more frustrating is when you have plenty of DSP left but run out of physical space to add more blocks. I generally like to have a separate dry and wet path, and to use maximum DSP I allocate that to path's 1 and 2. However for some reason there is no option to extend path 1a to path 1b for more blocks, it can only go to 2a and 2b (why, I have no idea) and it's not possible to extend path 2 at all. I don't understand why this is so complicated and restricted. I literally just want to add more blocks to path 1 and 2 separately, but it seems you can't do that.
