  • A sad update of my Zoom F1 field recorder, a recorder that breaks itself.

Have you sent this video to them? Might be a good way to give them feedback about the issue, I’m sure they are aware of it by now though.

When I bought my Zoom F1 and unboxed it, the first thing I noticed was how cheap and fragile the battery door was (and is). I had the same reaction that you did. The little tab on my battery door is still unbroken, only because I don't use the recorder at all. I also had issues with trying to latch the door closed. It kept popping open and was difficult to get my fingers in there to close it, especially with the rail in the way. Zoom definitely hired the wrong person to design the door. Anyway, since then I purchased the Zoom F3. I have no issues with it so far, except Zoom could have made the screen in color and at a higher resolution. I know, it would drain the battery quicker if they had. I think the entire recorder could have been designed a little bit bigger to accommodate a larger screen using modern screen technology, as is used in modern cell phones. Oh well. The F3 is quite an amazing audio recorder in spite of that. I do believe that Zoom should have designed the F3 to be able to record in 24 bit along with 32 bit. Then they would really have a versatile field recorder for the price. But I suppose the price would be much higher if they had done so.

Legit complaint. The battery door is a real failure in the design. I've ended up making my F1 an audio interface for my computer. No battery, dedicated USB cable running to it. When you don't have to mess around with that stupid battery door, it actually works quite well.

Exactly the same issue on 2 units I’ve had. Now I use a cable tie to secure the door. Disappointed for sure.

which sound recorder might be the best in 2023 if your goal is to make sure you can get the best sound when out in the city for street documentaries while filming on a little bit older and odd cameras like the Black Magic pocket Original camera that does not really have any good sound recording on its' own?
which sound recorder do you suggest to choose now in 2023?
    :)
    thanks!

Are you recording ambient noise and doing interviews or just recording ambient noise? How many inputs would you need and what form factor are looking for? What price range? There are many different things to consider.

You can power it witha battery pack trough the USB port.

Yes but that is more to carry and micro USB is flimsy. It defeats the purpose of a recorder like this.

Zoom just sent me a metal version of the latch, is that the one you got?

@@silverlightphotoco mm no, the issue was a couple years ago, before pandemic, didn't know they are providing metal latch!
