MK1 may have some declining character interest, and sure, where there’s smoke, there’s fire. However, it still has unreleased DLC characters and content scheduled for this year. It’s actively being supported by the developers, so writing it off feels premature.
I’m not sure where you're getting the numbers suggesting UNI2 is outperforming MK1. Additionally, game budgets and their correlation to viewer retention aren’t standard metrics used to determine a game's inclusion in EVO’s main lineup.
Let’s clarify this point. The mod you referenced was for Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, not Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Your wording suggests otherwise. While the Capcom Fighting Collection 2 includes fun games like Capcom vs. SNK, they lack the mass appeal and legacy status of MVC2. Capcom’s support for the collection could be well represented through an EVO announcement or as an exhibition event, but MVC2 stands on a different level.
The idea that EVO's main game lineup is driven solely by ongoing game development is an oversimplification. EVO isn't just a platform for marketing-it also serves to support the fighting game community, sell merchandise, and keep the competitive scene thriving. As a live event with admission costs, there are multiple stakeholders involved beyond just game publishers.
