    Thank you for making this video. It gave me confidence to go out and buy a 12-ton press from Harbor Freight and replace my front hub and bearings myself. It really was a simple processes. The only thing I would add is that, in order to get the steering knuckle separated from the steering rod (tie rod end), is to hammer the edge of the knuckle hard while lifting the steering rod up. Other than that, the explanation and graphic was real easy to understand. Thank you again!

    I know you posted this year's ago, but it's a huge help for me to have this well explained and detailed video to give me the confidence to tackle this on my own. I've done a hub assembly on my parents Pontiac grand prix when the bearing went, but that was a walk in the park compared to this since it didn't require any pressing. Thank you again, you probably just saved me $100's on labor!

    Thanks for the pointers. Bought the daughter a 98 for her first car to practice on and the bearings went out 2 days ago. Got some time to work on it, received advice to take out whole spindle but saw your video and said HEY! Soo much easier! At least to me. Thanks for the extra time to admire my handiwork with a beer!

    Only problems I have with the video are: #1- If you compress the brake caliper piston prior to removing caliper it comes off really easy. You can use an 8 inch C-clamp to do this. #2- The drawing at the 7:23 time mark. It points to HALF of the inner raceway and NOT THE OUTER RACE of the bearing as the inner bearing raceways are 2 piece. They are two piece due to the opposing angles of the tapered bearing races.

      I agree, I always suggest people use multiple sources and multiple videos when doing a job for the first time
      I also try to include any of the million mistakes I've made because that is where you can really save people time
      Thanks for the comment!

    Personally, I believe in using the right tool for the job. I would recommend using a "pickle fork" to remove tie rod ends and other ball joints. It is much better to apply even pressure on the ball joint, bolts, and connecting arms on the knuckle. This is a highly preferred way instead of loosening the nut and hammering it out or using a pry bar on the lower ball joint. Just remember "pickle fork." I didn't name the tool.
    I also want to point out the fact that he calls the inner race that was still stuck on the hub by the term, "Outer Race." In other words, what he calls the outer race in this video is actually the inner race. It's not a big deal. It's just if you came here to learn, you may want to learn the correct terms and proper tools. On the other hand he shows you how you can still get the job done even if you don't have all of the right tools.
    It sounds like he hammered the new bearing set into place and that worked rather then having it pressed in. If you go that route be sure to use a block of wood, a brass drift or other soft metal so that you don't damage your new bearing..
    I hope this helps on some way. Well, you probably could have gotten by without my comments and done just fine. Have a great time and make sure to do the job right the first time. Doing it over is NEVER fun.

      Pickle fork is well worth the money and can be found at most autopart stores

      You do not need the pickle fork those tear the ball joint and tie rod boots so that you have to replace those after Also the best method is to hit the spindle around where the ball joint or tie rod taper goes into after hitting with a hammer around there the ball joint or tie rod will release with no damage

    Those bearing retariners get really rusty and eaten up over the years the sad thing is they don't even make them anymore. At the dealership online you can't find them, you can find the 33mm ones not the 39mm ones. And also they make the clip style retainers but those don't go on the 39 mm bearings like these with the retaining plate.

    Dont take the bearing race off. It's not worth the time when you can buy a hub for $15

    Isn't it just easier to buy the hub and bearing already assembled?

    • @bryceemory
      @bryceemory 6 лет назад +1

      For the back yeah but can't find it all assembled for the front unless you find it with the knuckle, bearing, and hub all together but good luck on that. I sure couldn't.

    How are you able to get the knuckle assembly off with a pry bar without the inside wall of the fender getting in the way?

    My friend, this video was a godsend. While it looks labor-intensive, it's not rocket science, and with any luck I'll save about $300 which I can ill afford. Only thing that wasn't real clear, the partially-scored part you knocked off with the chisel: do ya get a new one? If so, where from? (I presume one that raty-lookin' would not be re-used.) Thank you so much!

      do you mean the inner race?

    • @tyrssen1
      @tyrssen1 8 лет назад

      Yes -- but on a look at Ebay, I find I can get the entire assembly, without having to press bearings in or out, for a reasonable rate. Thanks!

    Hi mreinsmith, I'm back -- quick question (I think!) I've got my parts (from Ebay.) Looks like the whole, complete assembly that just slips over the axle itself. It LOOKS like I don't even need to disassemble steering knuckles, etc, just take off the brake caliper, pad, and 32mm nut, slide this bugger on, and re-attach the nut and brake caliper. Have I got that right? (Wish I could send a picture, but they can be seen on Ebay just by typing in "2000 Dodge Neon front wheel bearing." They have both the separate, individual bearings and the total assemblies, which is what I got.) Thanks!

      Its proabbly too late but he said you need a press to take out the old BEring so it would be hard to instal the new one in even if it is complete without removing the ols one from the knuckle which has to be reused

    isnt the outer race the part thats stuck in the knuckle i thought u were doing the inner i have a 97 neon the balls and inner race falls out but the outer stays stuck in the bearing can i get that out with a 3gear jaw puller?

    How do you know if it's the bearing going out? My Neon '99 seems to shake a bit at over 45mph, but I don't want to do this if I don't have to. Thanks!

    so how can you tell if the wheel bearing is bad if it dousnt make any noise.

    • @mreinsmith
      @mreinsmith  8 лет назад

      All you need to do is pull on the wheel, even on the ground if it feels like it's moving on the hub the bearing is loose, you'll see what I mean when you try it, It will feel like the wheel wants to come off
