    Can you boot and run your Mac m2 from an external thunderbolt ssd. Why can't Apple just put a m.2 in the Mac mini instead of these soldered ssd. Every modern Windows motherboard has built in m.2 slots in them.

    • @JoeCastellon
      @JoeCastellon  Месяц назад

      Yes you can. Install any compatible version of MacOS into your NVMe and to boot from it you just have to hold down the Alt key just after turning your Mac on. You will see a menu where you can choose to boot from the NVMe drive.
      The soldered SSD is not exclusive to Macs. Many modern Windows computers are adopting this. Basically any thin laptop and premium devices like Microsoft Surface have soldered SSDs.

    Thanks for this video, Joe. I’m looking for an external boot SSD to use instead of the Fusion Drive in my 2017 iMac. Would you recommend this same package for that use case? I know it would work fine, but I wondered if you had more specific thoughts about working with older Intel Macs.

    • @JoeCastellon
      @JoeCastellon  3 месяца назад +1

      The only caveat I can think of is it would be as fast unless you plug it into a 40gbps port (not sure if the 2017 iMac has that), but it’s a given that it would definitely work better than the Fusion Drive.

    Why does everyone only use gen 3 nvme drives when you can you gen 4 which is faster ?

    • @JoeCastellon
      @JoeCastellon  7 месяцев назад +4

      Good question. For the time being, Gen3 NVMe's are capable of more speed than the currently available enclosures. There are many Gen3 NVMe's that can go up to 3,500MB/s where as this enclosure will never go above 2,800MB/s. I also tried an Orico enclosure which up until now is the fastest one that I have tested and it still won't go past 3,050MB/s. Buying Gen4 or better just for the speeds is not worth it if you're going to use it on an enclosure. The only two reasons to get Gen4/Gen5 NVMe's are if they price is lower than other current Gen3's or if you're future proofing, for example if you later plan to use the NVMe on a PC build.

      @JoeCastellon  6 месяцев назад +1

      @@Andresurfioll I'd be lying if I commented anything on the Newq as I haven't tested it. The product listing does look promising though. Now, based on my testing, though the Orico is generally faster than the Acasis, I feel like I trust the Acasis more, mostly because of it's metal build, and the speed difference does not make a difference at all in real world usage, at least to me. I really like the all metal build and that it is completely silent because it has no fan. There is a similar one with a built in fan in case that's important to you, but if you work in a climate controlled environment, you should be just fine without the fan.

Assuming that every single M2 Mac owner addressed by the title's "you" bought the base storage version is evidently bizarre - as is acting clueless when being confronted with valid criticism while already the very first internal storage bench shown prominently demonstrates about double the performance of the external drive. That should have been the side note to be put at the end, not the crucial clarification that clearly needed to be pointed out first - which is, by the way, the exact thing that made me read comments and reply - conspicuous a$$-backwards practice like this only adds to OP's argument when generating viewer engagement seems to be the whole point of it.
