Great video, I am going to tackle this sooner than later. Note: The seal can leak when the diff breather is clogged, so make note to check that and address it if need be.
You are so correct on the axle vent cap. My seals weren’t leaking but I wanted to check the vent cap and when I unscrewed it I heard a poof sound. So I got a new one and also changed the rear differential oil.
Great Video, I was able to get it done. the only thing was the abs sensor did not want to come out but , I did get the seal the breather and the brakes replaced. Not as hard as I thought.

Nice video. Fun to watch. I like the super wide angle shots. You make it look very easy. I've only got a rubber mallet. Will that do for banging in the seal?
I had a small accident where I hit a wall and my rear tire wobbles now,I have a replacement axle and need to know if I need to grease the axle end where it connects to the differential before installing it.Also for the brake line do you need to cap the brake line after removing it so it doesn’t spill brake fluid? Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
ON MY 1997 lANDCRUISER (same seal) - GETTING THE SEAL LINED UP TO GO IN SQUARELY IS NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE - LAST TIME TOOK ABOUT 150 ATTEMPTS AND THE SECOND ONE IS A REPEAT - I JUST PUT THE SEAL IN THE FREEZER TO SEE IF IT WILL HELP - THEY NEED TO GO IN PERFECTLY SQUARE OF THEY WILL DEFORM
Yes it did. Also check if you have a vent/jiggle valve on top of the rear differential housing. If that gets clogged with dirt it can cause excessive pressure in rear diff causing it to leak from seals
I fixed mine with a new axle seal but only after cleaning out almost a tube of FIPG that the pervious owner had squeezed into the axle to try and stop the leak....
This was super helpful to see how the axle comes out and how everything is assembled. Thank you!

Nice !! Doing mines this winter when it cools down here in Phoenix
Glad to know I don't have to pull the bearings to replace the seals! Also, I never thought to check if it was brake fluid or diff fluid.

Did you use OEM axel seal or just one from the parts store?
Same question I was thinking….a friend of mine didn’t use OEM and it leaked immediately after
So I wonder how long it took for that bearing to go bad due to all the grease being washed out of the bearing by the gear oil.
Thanks for your help now you need to do the wreck appearing steering seal and let me know how to install it
hey man, did you drain diff oil before take axle shaft appart or just take the entire axle on a upper position on the new seal side instead?
You don't have to drain the fluid. Just make sure its topped off after the repair
@@FixItPhillip magnetic oil seal, isnt? thanks buddy!!

What’s is the tool you are using to put in the new seal ?
Hope my 4th gen 4runner is the same process 🤞
I watch and follow all the steps , thank u after that it start leak again , what might o be
Clogged vent on top of differential. Or a worn out axle bearing
What was the round metal piece you used to drive in the seal?
Seal driver
Did this stop the leak?
Yes it did. Also check if you have a vent/jiggle valve on top of the rear differential housing. If that gets clogged with dirt it can cause excessive pressure in rear diff causing it to leak from seals
My ABS tone rings gorged some lines inside of the axle housing where the seals goes
I fixed mine with a new axle seal but only after cleaning out almost a tube of FIPG that the pervious owner had squeezed into the axle to try and stop the leak....
Thank you
Do you have to pull the differential out as well?
No
is it the same idea for a 5th gen?
Believe so
Did you really just sniff your brake drum that causes cancer in all States
Lol
Guess I got cancer then
