Overton Loyd (born April 20, 1954) is an African-American artist best known for creating the cover art for the Parliament album Motor Booty Affair and several other records. [1] His style of art varies often from work to work, and can range from loose sketches and paintings to fully fleshed out pieces. He is a friend of George Clinton of Parliament, and most of the subjects for his art are either Clinton or Parliament.[2]
Loyd's contribution to Motor Booty Affair was considerable. The original LP was released in several different configurations, each taking advantage of Loyd's unique talents. The main release consisted of a gate-fold album cover, with Loyd's artwork on the front and back covers. His illustrations included cartoon portraits of some of the "characters" mentioned in the songs on the album, including "Mr. Wiggles the Worm." There was also a picture disk, with Loyd's illustration printed directly on the vinyl LP. Finally, there was a special edition that included cardboard cutout figures featuring Loyd's cartoon illustrations of most of the characters mentioned in the songs.[3]
When Parliament went on tour in support of Motor Booty Affair, Loyd designed costumes for members of the band based on the cartoon illustrations he had made for the album cover.[4]
In 1977, Loyd illustrated a comic book that was included in Parliament's Funkentelechy Vs. the Placebo Syndrome, portraying the epic battle between Sir Nose D’Voidoffunk and Starchild (see P-Funk mythology). [5] In the cartoon, which echoes the lyrics to the songs on the album, Sir Nose, who is determined not to dance, is ultimately defeated by Starchild, who is equipped with his Bop Gun, when Starchild shines a Flash Light on him.
Loyd was also responsible for the artwork on Bootsy's Rubber Band's This Boot Is Made for Fonk-N and Parliament's Gloryhallastoopid (Or Pin the Tail on the Funky), both released in 1979. -Wikipedia

Said it before and I'll say it again - these animated ads and concert vinnetes need to be released in their entirety.
This is art, music history.
yup
Music featuring two ideologies with two different rival characters fighting for the soul of the human race is beyond genius.
Overton Lloyd was a great cartoonist.

Wish he would’ve made a tv show
He's a good friend of mine...
@@dimviesel While he didn't make a TV show, he did draw the celebrity caricatures for the game show Win, Lose or Draw, which was produced by Disney, Burt Reynolds, and veteran game show host Bert Convy. And he did a damn good job drawing them. Still though, a TV show by him would've been great, I'm sure.
Pedro be was too. He did their early album covers
A P-Funk Adult Swim series would be incredible!
This would've been thee Funkiest animated series in the history of television!😉👊
They actually pitched a Bootsy Collins show, but it got canned. The pilot should be somewhere on the interwebz! Looked pretty rad!
@@KingYahshua Bootsy actually wound up portraying an animated version of himself years later on the Looney Tunes spinoff show "Loonatics Unleashed", season two. 😎✌
@@JAZZMASTER7764 Sounds gnarly! I’m going to check it out.

Agreed!
Clinton was so ahead of his time. Light years away. A musical genius.

My dad was a huge P Funk fan. If he were still here today he'd be right here on RUclips enjoying every Parliament tv commercial from back in the day.
God bless your DAD!
He had great taste! 🙏🏾
R.I.P. Pops🤘🏾
Your father had a great taste in music @errolthomas9426. I'm a big fan of Parliament/Funkadelic
This looks so great they would have had a cartoon series if it wasn’t the 70s.
Yo if the Jackson's could have a cartoon then p funk would have taken it to another level.
Well let’s not forget the 70s cartoon are not know for their quality
@punchout
Chill with the jackassy vibes. U sound bitter asf. All up the comments acting the fool.
@punchout I think that the album was the bomb. George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Fred Wesley and the Horny Horns, Brides of Funkenstein and the rest of Parliament Funkadelic still got it going on
@punchout Gloryhallastoopid or Pin the Tail of the Funky
This is what I miss about Album Covers... the art works
Everything about them. We were little. They were huge. All the pictures, lyrics, stories and band info was the best. Even their smell meant something. Every form since records been easier to carry around with us wherever we go but they’re a poor substitute.
So true; the stories being the creative pieces were something you could enjoy over and over.

Damn the Avengers, we need a Parliament/Funkadelic Movie. The Story has already been written by the Music.

The P-Funk album interiors really were their answer to the Marvel Comics of the 60s-70s

@@privateaccount1839 you right
This would have been perfect to watch on Saturday mornings after the Jackson 5 cartoon!😎
Yeah but one thing about P-Funk, it wasn't for kids.
@DawgTawkWellington (DTW) Understood.
Parliament Funkadelic the best band ever
The Funkadelics was an experience and a revolution of sound snd sceptical and a happening and one big party. A comeing together of people. It's hard to describe if you've never seen their show. I went to a show of theirs and their equipment and everything was held up in another city fue to the snow storm. And somehow they got instruments and amps and proceeded to give one of their best shows I've seen. To describe their shows is really impossible. But one of the best of all time.
I thought The Beatles were the best band ever
@@ChrisandSimon Not even close. The Funkadelics and there show was a experience. A get together of a few thousand of your closest frends that you didn't know. But the music brought you all together. For the biggest party you've ever seen.
Is! Parliament Funkadelic IS the best best band ever.
😎🤘
Overton Loyd was one hell of an artist, he made them into real life superheroes!
They advertised this during Soul Train..
REALLY? Then I must have been asleep or in the can when they ran. I totally missed these!
Yet I dont think they ever performed on soul train
@@kaleahcollins4567 I do know Bootsy did. I saw that show.
I could totally imagine watching soul train and seeing these commercials back in the 70’s , I was born in 88 so I missed it by a good 11 years lol
Parliament/Funkadelic will always be legendary nobody can touch their styles
I think this the next level for the funk.... Since George Clinton has retired from touring... There needs to be an animated series or movie... Keep the funk going into the next millennium and beyond...P FUNK LIVES... FOREVER...
Pretty sure the only time these ads aired was when Soul Train was on, right after the Colt 45 & Sta-Sof-Fro ads

It's like Ralph Balshi animation but even cheaper looking. I dig it.
The second part especially. The horse looking thing in the jumpsuit at the end looks straight out of Fritz the Cat.
@@MrRyan-wu4jx That's Starchild after Sir Nose has pinned the tail on the "funky." If you have that album, it's all there in the comic.
Also without the tons of racism...F**K “balshi”
@@TheONE-kq3mm Bakshi was vehemently anti-racist though??
@@rubyleopard have you seen those movies...I call bulldhii on that
P-funk is the uncut funk!!! Da bomb.
I always had my Sir Nose poster up and had the power hitter bop gun. Ah! Good times !
No one could narrate like Adolf Ceaser (the voice).
That definitely did not sound like Adolf Caesar. He has a distinct voice.
Yes he does have a very distinctive voice which is why he did many many voice overs for commercials, TV intros, movie trailers "Blaxploitation" movie trailers and other promos.
I remember back in 1978 George Clinton in a local Washington DC radio interview mentioning Caesar as the voice of two cartoon promos; unless George Clinton was wrong.
- Funkentelecy/Placebo Syndrome
- Motor Booty Affair
Caesar has done numerous voice overs, the P-Funk addition was one of many.
@@Nuwaupianism-com that's an interesting history that I wasn't aware of other ads featuring Adolf, so thanks for sharing that. But this one does not sound like him, definitely someone white doing the commercial spot. Brings back memories just the same...
@@kdub607 No problem.
Incidentally,@@Nuwaupianism-com --
The voiceover for the "Funkentelechy vs. The Placebo Syndrome" ad sounded
a whole lot more like the late Ernie Anderson (best known for being "The Voice Of ABC").
Would've loved seeing a Parliament full animation series
On guard! Defend yo-self!! Best band of all time,GOAT! Gotta thank my dad for putting me on🙏🏿
I need to call Overton and let him know this is here (he's a good friend of mine).... awesome!!
...tell him his album covers are eternally dope!
@@rasun316 I will!! I texted him this morning!
@@rasun316 I’m gonna send him the link right now...
No, no! Tell him to release more!!! I remember one of the albums coming with a mini comic book on the battle of Sir Noze vs. Dr. Funkenstein. If Iremember correctly, Sir Noze shot Doc and thought he won, but he turned Doc into the Funky Donkey (Gloryhollastupid)!!! Man I wish I still had that! Please ask him how we can get that again! A retro resurge happens all the time, why not on this? Thanks on if you can relay that sentiment to Mr. Overton and our appreciation for his visual masterpiece.
@@kdub607 ...i never knew the album came with a comic. It would be so cool to find one now!
The animation, and characters are wild. I wish cartoons were done like this now.

Maaaan, P Funk was special... To have sat in on the brainstorm sessions that led to the "final boss" version of these funk pioneers... MY GOD! 😲🎶🎵🛸👽👾🤖👽🛸🎵🎶
I've seen the "Funkentelechy" commercial, but I hadn't seen the "Gloryhallastoopid" commercial until now. What a great find! Thanks for sharing!
Amazing animation it gave you a visual of the whole battle of of starchild and and sir nose devoid of funk
Thanks and good looking out for us P- Funk fans we out here and will support what we like.
That was amazing! How am I just seeing this in 2021? !
This woulda been the sickest Saturday morning cartoon

Truly it is written: "Make my funk the P-funk."
My very first concert experience was " The Mothership Connection . " with The P-funk Allstars!!! George Clinton and the gang came on stage wearing 12 inch platforms . Never seen anything else like it to this day!!!
Wow, this is the first time I even thought of this since I saw it as a small kid! Love it!
Yeah those P-Funk Promos were funky i also remember the Motor Booty Affair Album was actually a Soundtrack for the Movie but Casablanca Records was on the verge of bankruptcy by then.
Outstanding upload. I’m still looking for videos and cartoons that PFunk at their concerts would show before they took it to the stage

This is wild but awesome. George Clinton was insane
OMG!!! Man, flashbacks from the '70s and '80s! I remember the artwork was funky like the music; I even started sketching because of these killer album covers! Good memories, thanks for putting this out there. This was funny though, listening to the tone and delivery of what clearly sounds like a white announcer! He was emphasizing correctly though, LOL!
It’s like it was yesterday when I saw this commercial airing during Soul Train in the 70’s I was hooked!
Wow! I had never seen these nor knew they even existed!! I'm a loyal Funkater from that time and these commercials are a revelation.
First concert every want you in my life 1977 I was 14 years old at the checkerdome St Louis
I remember this commercial playing in Chicago, wow!
This is what Freaknick would have been in the 70's.
I haven't seen this since I was a kid
Woke up with a runny nose. Running to watch these...
If your nose is running and your feet are smelling, you must be upside down clown
George Clinton's extraordinary genius is yet to -- and may never -- be fully recognized.
The second half looks like it was done by Ralph Bakshi
