Your choice of twig for logs is spot on! The bark texture scales down brilliantly as does the ring detail on the ends. Lovely use of these little whatever-you-call-thems!

Many thanks for your kind words, I was pleased how the twigs turned out, I have some plastic ones, but there's nothing like the real thing, all the best

Most everyone I watch on YT with amazing modeling skills and creativity are so humble about what they create. That includes you. So neat to see plastic pieces becoming real life models of what’s in your head.

What a lovely thing to say, thank you so much, it's funny when I look at what I've built I'm never that happy, I suppose it's because I can see where I could've done better, I explained to a chap once the bits and bobs that I had used to make a model, he said afterwards he wished he did not asked as when he looked at the model all he could see was bottles and coffee stirrers., wishing you all the best, Carl

Thank you Brian, I've always liked this scale and it's easier on my aging eyesight, as I mentioned, I have an Emett tram to build so will swap between the two, all the best

What lovely work, Carl. I was in a bit of a funk about modeling a few years back and a friend suggested I look at On30. I really enjoy that scale after seeing it in person and Calvin has been a great help acquiring stock. Then I saw On18 and fell in love with it. I've so many ideas for things to do that it's slowing me down getting started. I spent last weekend at a show and my table mate had an On18 layout he built on a bookshelf. It is lovely and runs a treat. I have a lot of N Scale track from my years building in N, and the greatest thing to me about On18 is that there are no hard and fast rules or rivets to count. It really puts me in mind of your work and seeing what you've done here is really inspiring.

Hi Jeff, lovely to hear from you and thanks for your kind words again, On30 certainly changed my modelling, I was in a bit of a rutt modelling UK stuff mainly, then I stumbled across the scale, so very different to what I've been doing and I just took to it straight away, and then of course On18 followed along nicely, Calvin has been super good to me, with helping advice and generally pointing me in the right direction, I do tend to go off plan a bit now and again, maybe a bit whimsical or just cartoony, but it's not hurting anyone, not sure where I'm going with this one as yet, but I think I might keep it micro, hope you're well and happy modelling all the best Carl

    • @carlroberts2539
      @carlroberts2539  3 месяца назад

Jeff, I just use a track pin , bent slightly and short piece of chain, I do glue the chain to one of the wagons permanently, not a great way of doing it I know but I haven't come up with anything better yet

Those wagons and loads look great, Carl, as does the loco. We are looking forward to seeing this layout develop when you get the time. If the wagon with the barrel was on our layout it would be carrying Dylington Custard. Great video...cheers James 🙂👍

Hello boys, you've been posting some lovely videos, I'm pleased with the way the rolling stock is coming along and I haven't built in this scale for a few years now, Custard you say ha ha, I might have to do something for my Emett layout with you boys in mind, wishing you both all the best

Hi Carl, thanks for the kind words. Your models turned out to be absolutely incredible!
At 1:08 I just call those "On18 Flat Cars." They are sprued that way to keep the printing costs down and simplifies my life greatly.
At 2:46 those are what I call disconnect cars. In the real world, you could haul items of varying lengths with them and a chain or bar was put down the middle to join them together. I have seen tank cars done in that style, although it always looked like a derailment waiting to happen.
4:00 those are just plain On18 chassis. Currently, I am changing the printing material so they are grey, instead of white, but functionally all the same! For the fine details, the grey stuff is much more durable.
5:15 is an old crane design I am slightly modifying to meet the specs of my current printing company but I LOVE how it turned out!
As for the weight issue in the boxcar, I am looking into having some weights laser-cut from steel but I need to figure out how much weight you get, relative to the cost overall. Alternatively, you could cut some lead flashing or metal balls in the voids on the underframe to hold things down. Sadly a cast brass underframe clocks in at a hefty $65 each for a 10-pack, so I think that's not really an option!

Hi Calvin, thank you so much for filling in the blanks, your models are an absolute pleasure to build there so well made it makes my modelling easy, I know very little about the scales and the correct terms for the wagons /cars even the engines, so it makes it very hard for me to answer some of the questions, folk been very kind about my modelling but that's all it is. I just build models., I have no technical knowledge, you have encouraged me, guided me and helped me so much, all the best my friend from across the pond

Never heard of On18 but very nice work which I can really appreciate. We refer to those as flatcars. I model the turn of the 19th century in HO scale and I have to just about build all my rolling stock from kits like IHC, BTS (Better Than Scratch), Walthers, Roundhouse, Silver Streak, Train Minitures and Tichy Train Group and kit bash some. Most of the old rolling stock is based on the truss rod flatcar. They usually had no brakes and grab irons. The first brakes used were K-brakes and, I think, in the 30's they came out with the AB brakes. I just finished building an old time blacksmith car for the D.L.&W. (Lackawana) and weathered it with oil paints after painting it with acrylic paints. Takes longer for the oils to dry but it gets me that old greasy look like one would see on a well used turn of the century wood covered flatcar. To be correct I'd have to use link & pin couplers but prefer the ease of Kadee couplers. I really love your "wagons" as you call them. I love those couplers. I had to take a screen shot of your building as I do Lionel 027 which is O scale but kinda squashed down just a bit. I love to scratch build so I really appreciate your work. Cheers from across the pond from an old modeler in eastern TN

Hi Rusty, thank you so much for taking the time to comment, I haven't heard of On18 scale until I found some models that Calvin produces on his channel make it with Calvin, I had built an On 30 layout that went down well with folk, and as this is a similar scale, basically using O scale structures I thought I have a go, flat cars, yes, that's what Calvin calls them, your modelling sounds fantastic. There's lots there that I've never heard of. Do you have a channel that you show your builds, I would be fascinated to see it, wishing you all the best, Carl

Thanks Tony, not sure quite where I'm going with this one yet, did think about nicking your track plan from your lovely layout, it was a proper treat to see it running, the other layouts at the show were all good, but I've seen that sort of thing so so many times, where is yours Put a smile on my face and I watched from a distance to see the reaction the showgoers, smiles and interest from adults and children alike, top job mate, all the best and see you soon, Carl
