You save the corn cobs for when you plant tomato plants. You put them in the bottom of the hole to hold moisture when you water the tomato plant
Thank you. This is my first time drying corn.
Great info, love the machine to pull the kernels.
Have not used one in 50 years.
Great video. Thanks for sharing. I'm drying out some corn on the cob for my chicks and I'm a first time chicken owner. This helped me a bunch and I appreciate your time and knowledge. Have a wonderful day! 😊
Really enjoyed the video. Love how nothing is wasted, not even moldy corn!
Man, that looks like satisfying work!
Thanks for the vid, guys!
Thanks for a great video. I would have loved having that shucker when I was a kid. We used to get together as a family group when I was young and the kids would shuck corn and snap peas. I actually enjoyed it. We would all take turns on the handle of the ice cream churn when the job was done. Loved those days.
Sounds a lot like my younger years. Thanks
Love your library of videos!! Will be harvesting my corn this evening so of course I searched Deep South for videos.. That corn sheller is awesome!! ❤️

BEAUTIFUL BOUNTY!! Thanks for sharing your insights, tips and practical techniques. My husband watched this with me and fell in love with Danny Corn! Mind you, our inly foray into gardening has been limited to ornamental landscaping, tomatoes and herbs! I was surprised (sitting next to him while watching this video projected into the TV with the Chromecast app) how drawn in he was. I think deep was calling to deep.
That's fantastic, my husband and I just saw this tonight. How is you venture going? We may order a corn sheller..... Found one at Tractor supply.
All of that food and seeds are a beautiful sight!
Thanks Sharon

thanks for this video
A corn sheller.... that is a neat tool !! Always learning something new. I happened to see a scale there... a manual non electric scale? Could you tell me the name of that? I have been looking for one for my soap making.
God Bless You Good People
It is my understanding, there is to be a fertilizer shortage this year. It is expected to be part of the reason for a grain shortage this year. I have for my family purposes, hard wheat berries (both red & white) and I understand (I hope correctly so) these can also be used as seed for wheat.
Corn is also a major part of our diet. I have picked fresh corn from my grandfather's field. I remember helping my Grandmother clean, remove from cob, to prepare for the canner. I have a very nice supply of corn I bought frozen and dehydrated for my family's table for about 1 year.
My concern is beyond that. While grocery shelves are high priced and scarce, we have not yet felt the effects of poor crop yields this growing season will bring. This video was very helpful, but I have a few questions.
I purchased (Amazon) from JoJo's Organics, two 5 pound bags of "field dried" corn. I accidentally hit the button twice and got two bags instead of one. Maybe that was Devine intervention. The kernels look beautiful and each bag is marked with an expiration date 9/23. My intention origionally was to grind for corn meal. But now, are these kernels plantable? I plan on planting wheat this year and my husband really wants to plant corn. We have space.
I appreciate all that Deep South Homestead and Crazy Daze shares with us. In one of Danny's Proch Times he rightly said the knowledge of our agricultural roots is passing away. Thank you for passing on you life's gifts.
thanks Danny, been waiting on a Danny corn clip. very beautiful. tortillas? i collect corn like folks save gold. here field corn pollen covers everything. breeding is difficult but possible. my popcorn is getting better every year.
That Gizmo is ingenious. A "Somebody & Sons" (probably) "Patent No." piece of kit designed by either an engineer who farmed or a farmer with an engineer-ical turn of mind, don't you think? I wondered why you made the box so big until I saw the dry kernels start flying. Great gadget meets great easy peasy collection system. Doesn't get any better than that really does it.
We just watched this ... Can you grind Silver King corn. Does it matter what kind of corn it is?
I had always wondered how grits were made. Thank you. My Dad past away in September and he had given us some home ground grits but forgot what kind. They are thick and fluffy. I wish I remembered...: (. I still catch myself trying to call him to ask questions... Thank you Danny and Wanda for sharing with us all. Robert and Sharon
Thanks MAn
Very useful info!
I've heard of a corn sheller, but I've never seen one work. That is an amazing invention!
Will you be showing how you grind your cornmeal and grits?
God Bless🙏
Ah, yes...ergot. The grandfather of lysergic acid diethylamide. 'Occurs on wheat, too. My husband liked your sheller but I really enjoyed your bin/funnel system. I liked the smooth sides and it's obvious some careful scraping and sanding made for long hours for you. Thank you so much, Danny. Thanks to Wanda for the slow panning of your "dining room". Yep, that's what our living room and library look right now as my pantry (bigger than our kitchen) is in a bit of disarray. 'Trying to get some measurements for adding on some earthquake retainer bars to these wooden shelves. 'Startin' to bow with the weight of our quarts! Danny, when it comes time to process your hogs, will you show us your methods? My husband likes to tell the kids and family about the time his Dad used a great block and tackle system to haul up a sow for parboiling the bristles off her skin first and unfortunately, the tree limb they chose was partially rotten. Whooo-eee! No one got burned and thank goodness, they got the hog out 'fore she cooked through. Sheesh. God Bless.
Good video. If that is only what you lost, I can't imagine how much you have!
We have tons more to gather Thanks
Careful yall dont starve over there. :) HAAA! Cant wait to see the Grits and Corn meal video!
Do you have a video of grinding the corn for meal and grits?
That corn-sheller is beyond handy.
Thanks Lana
I feel a little better after seeing your canners, dehydrators, vacuum sealer, and other items laying about, cause it looks a lot like my house right now! Tis the season :-) Thanks for doing this video. After you shell the corn, do you have to grind it up, or can you store the kernels for later grinding?
We store the kernels in the freezer till we need to grind it.Thanks
Hey guys! I know this is an old video, but I am looking for one of those corn shellers. I do not see it on your site. Do you have a link to purchase it?
Thanks!
Does the you crank it sheller damage the kernels of corn so they won't store?
our field corn is hickory cane white and some of it has a white powder on it is it mold or not I hate to waste it but better safe than sorry thanks and God bless
?WHERE DID YOU GET THE RED CORN HULLER?THIS IS COOL.THANK,PIA&ALL♡
Great video. What is the biggest difference between feed corn and corn for human consumption? They don't grow sweet corn here but I can get feed corn for free but I am not sure if or how we can eat it...
You can turn it into masa and make tortillas with it
You mentioned using some of that corn with mold to bait traps with. I would advise against this if you are (presumably)eating whatever you're trapping. Basically you will be eating what the trapped animal ate if you are eating said animal. Thank for the great video! Be safe!
Where do i find the device you are using to shell the corn??
I want to knw..if I leave my corns as it is..with it's cover ..it's gets pale yellow it's skin cover and quite dry..but still i.am not able to make popcormsn with them..will u please guide me..how I dry them...plzzz..I want to eat popcorn by our purchased 🌽 corn
Did you make the machine or buy it somewhere?
I say you both are very busy...Danny you feel ok? you look plum wore out..I wonder why with the work you both do..
thank you both for the great video..
Is that sheller still available retail, or is it an antique search item? Would love to add it to our took kit.
Check out our website deepsouthhomestead.com On the Books- Amazon Affiliate page we have the corn sheller listed. Thanks
neat video. Where ever did you come by that corn sheller?
Check out our website, on the Books- Amazon Affiliate page, we listed the corn sheller.

So, historically many corn varieties had multiple ears per plant. If you are sorting by ear and just selecting the biggest fullest ears aren't you committing to having just one ear per plant?
I wonder if you've used sprouted grains and legumes (fodder biscuits) to feed your animals???
Just about any seeds can be used and many sprouts are extremely healthy for people whether in salads, smoothies, soups and stews. The cost is very low considering the nutrients gains to yourselves and the animals. My favorite is sunflower sprouts (4 or 5 days old). super great in a lettuce or spinach salads, sandwiches and soups.
👍ty
How long does it take to dry the corn out?
Clifford Hagen This corn was blown down by the wind so we hung it to dry which took about 4 weeks to dry. Thanks
