History of Kingston & St. Andrew
Kingston Early Beginnings
The parish of Kingston is the capital of Jamaica and it is located on the south-eastern end of the island.
Until 1692, the parish of Kingston did not exist. Kingston came into existence in 1692 after a massive earthquake and it’s subsequent after effects, destroyed two thirds of Port Royal and killed about three thousand inhabitants. Survivors of the earthquake fled to the Liguanea Plains only to perish from exposure and disease. As a result, two weeks after Port Royal’s destruction, the government purchased two hundred acres of land known as “Colonel Barry’s Hog Crawle,” at a cost of £1000. Up on until the sale, the land was owned by Sir William Beeston who was absent from the island at the time, therefore his attorney Nicholas Lawes, conducted the sale on Beeston behalf.

Thank you
@@HummingbirdJa A wise man will always welcome and appreciate constructive criticism. It is easier, however, to converse with a drunken man than to talk to a fool.
No need to change anything about your enunciation, it's a unique part of your dialect and represents your language. Keep up the good works.
@@coko6641 agreed. Maurice's advice is correct, text book journalism. Its purposes are: 1. to be clearly audible by the largest audience, and 2. to represent the message professionally to increase the perception of reliable accuracy. However, new age media has proven that a unique dialect representing your culture has greater mass appeal than perfect english, and the pros likely shadow the cons. Its a new media landscape with evolving rules.
@@HummingbirdJa Mourn seven days for the dead. Mourn a lifetime for a fool.

There is so much great history in Jamaica. You are a remarkable person.
Thanks for watching
Thank you so much for the history lesson greatly put together and excellently delivered. ❤️💙🇯🇲💯
I went to high school in Falmouth. The first year William Knibb became a public high school. There is a ton of historic features in that area. I remember how the design of some of the buildings match those of old US cities like in New Hampshire.
I used to look at the headstones in cemetery at the church in the square because of the old dates. I remember also that there were sugar mills built by slaves..one was on the William Knibb campus.
Since Falmouth is such a historic town, would love to hear the history along with maps and artifacts.
Wonderful production! Thanks for the history lesson on our island home 🏝️❤️
Learnt more about Jamaica than ever before. Great video.
You need to do one on the ports in Jamaica that were the main slave ports or importers of slaves , where and how they were dispersed through the island. That will open eyes .
I am actually working on something about the slave holding areas so I will look into that. Thank you
@@EliteJamaica Looking forward to it , it needs to be told.
Blessings
Yesss indeed

Thank you so much for the great information about Jamaican History. It is very informative and eductional because lots of changes happen because of natural disasters and the Earth reshaping it self to survive.
Liguanea or New Kingston are the only places in Kington I stay when I visit. Strategically located, close proximity to everything and, above all, relatively safe.
I do love history❤️✌🏽

Thank you so much I didn't know nothing at this history
Thanks for watching
Beautiful Jamaica my Island home thank you for our history god bless
It is painful that all the dates being mentioned here that Black people were not a part of any of those decision making!
Indeed, up until 1838, our African brothers and sisters had been slaves and chattel in Jamaica!
And after slavery ended, indentured workers from India and China were brought in to do the hard labour, thereby keeping the freed Black Jamaicans still desperately and frightfully impoverished!!
Thank God for today!
Was thinking the same thing. He needs to elaborate more on the Era and to put into perspective that Port Royal's inhabitants were largely European.
Thanks learnt a few new info
Kingston & St. Andrew is the meaning that perfectly coins the term; "Conurbation/Conurbanisation".💯
Thank you for your hard work I do love and appreciate all of this information many of such which was not taught in school, just since week I was inquiring why halfway tree is named as such and you have just revealed it to me thank you. Keep up the good work.
Rae Town. Was the first residential community in Kingston
Note roads are numbered from east and south few roads do not follow that rule
The squalor resulted in in great cholera epidemics in the 1850's where around 40000 died
I love the history our history brings Wonders
Very interesting. I learned a lot. Thanks 👍
Great content! Thanks so much!
I noticed that there was no mention of slavery, was there no slaves in 17 or 18 century Kingston
this video was not about that, there are videos on this channel that cover slavery In detail
Great info🇯🇲lived in raetown🌴
I love History
THIS WAS MAGNIFICENT MI BRETHA 🇵🇦🥷🇯🇲🙏🏾
I wish the tree at halfway tree had been preserved to remain now. One new tree should be planted. I would like a big special tree at hwt 🤪
I kept wondering why they didn't make a mural of half way tree park and posted it in that location with the tree.
@iotahutchinson1482 really think they should
Excellent!
Wonderful.
St Andrew is the Patron saint of scotland. The death toll from the 1907 earthq was over 1300 and most of the bodies were placed in two mass Graves in May Pen.cemetary there is a memorial monument to the victims of the earthquake now outside the cemetery
The patron saint of England is St George
May not be for much longer
Wait...a tsunami came to Jamaica? 😱
Yes Sir. you're doing a great job thanks for the updates on our history, most of theses things i didn't known, which book are you reading from i would like to have a copy of it.
🇯🇲🇨🇦🗣️😎⭐🎬 Love it👈🏿
Thanks for your support

It is a lovely city❤
The 🌊Purge🔥 of Port Royal
Numbers 31:23
Every thing that may abide the fire, ye shall make it go through the fire, and it shall be clean: nevertheless it shall be purified with the water of separation: and all that abideth not the fire ye shall make go through the water.
@@HummingbirdJa Are you seriously interested to know my point?🤔
Religious people
@@Cooyah888 What's wrong with religious people? Jamaica used to be a God blessed religious country. I used to visit my grandmother on the island when I was little. I haven't been back to the island in over 35 years but I remember it was a rather lovely place!
@@prettyyoungthingpyt5015 Everything is with religious people. They are full of hate, bigots, and all the ills. Just take a look around the world. Sadly that has changed. It was a man with Bible in one and a gun in the other enslaved my ancestors.
The only thing I would be concerned about is when Jamaica parts ways with the British Monarch if all the names associated with these historical places will remain the same.
Great content💯 It seems as if the people with the financially vested interest in the development of this new town "KINGSTON" was not happy with the pace of transition to "KINGSTON" as the new preffered town and went back to burn what's left of the then "PORT ROYAL" so that the Kingston investment could take shape a multiply......Oh well just a though and a slip of the fingers.😇
So that’s where Beaston Street got it’s name
I wondered how many people knew that jacks hill was below sea level as flat as half way tree.the hill is the cause of waves, tidal waves washing up sands from the sea thousand and thousand of years ago that is why the front part of the hill is not good for building.
Hi thank you very much.
Good content!
Good to know about the history of Jamaica did no so much thing hope back in the day s things was chap
❤
Where do u find your info, do u have a specific website or something would love to know
No I do research and put the facts together
I enjoy 😉
An error in your reporting
The capital city of Kingston is not only confined to the parish of Kingston. It straddles both the parishes of Saint Andrew and Kingston. Most Jamaicans are easily confused by this, which is odd. This is why the KSAC were merged to form one city, two parishes...smh 🤦
Eg: like Atlanta which straddles both Fulton and Dekalb counties respectively to form one city...🤔
You did not watch the video, because all of that is covered
@@EliteJamaica Just replying to your first line, The parish of Kingston is the capital of Jamaica. Great video nonetheless 👏
Thank you,am wondering whats so hard to understand.
I THANK YOU FOR THIS, as in schol, there was NEVER MUCH JAMAICAN HISTORY, geography HS b her was NEVER much history available in one place, just jibs/jabs
🏴🇬🇧🇯🇲🇯🇲🇺🇸🇺🇸
🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲
You forgot to say about the sinful acts that was going on in Port Royal.
Wicked Port Royal , God completely destroyed Port Royal by fire.
You needed to identify the locations of historic sites
The people did already turn Kingston into a city the government only certified it we made to all the Original Roads and Towns
So wait, you're telling me that Jamaica experienced a tsunami?! How comes me jus a hear dis!? Please tell me the source of that info.
Sources are listed
Port Royal was said to be destroyed by God, because of the evil's that was around. this is what i was told when i was a kid growing up
God is not real 🙄🙄
What i do know , is that we need to do better.
My birth place…
Just 1000 pounds...haha back in the day life must have been good
Lol, most certainly
Yes indeed! Life was good however, not for black skin people.
My bad. Your dates are right, my confusion.
Why when Jamaicans read, they end each sentence on the same note.
Some,
@@westkingston3135 most,
@@HummingbirdJa Video was informative but couldn't help but notice how it was read. Nothing wrong with it just found it strange that even their news is read the same way.
Imagine talking about owning land that was stolen from the Tainos.
Check your dates: 1703? you mean 1903. Otherwise fascinating.
4:04 what’s with the pink faces wearing a ‘fro 🤣
Hint 😂
Hint 😅
Suh if black ppl never own no land on earth, where they stay to born ? Is it in space? Cuz as far as I can see it's the slave master alone me a hear about
😮before the earthquake it was dumped up not all things written or facts hi-story isn’t close to the truth
