My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We saw over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. Good video on an often oiler issue. Catching the issue early saved the melt down and total destruction. Nothing worst than losing a pefectly good machine from neglect. Thanks for the fix and saving a chainsaw replacement and my woodsman sanity.

Excellent class on pro/commercial grade saw oiler systems & repair. I've only had hobby grade saws to tinker/repair on like old poulans, & a more recent makita. None had oiler problems & I don't know if they had oil pumps or something cheaper like a calibrated leak hole (lol) type oil sys. They all fling oil & I never looked into it. Now I know! Thanks Bre! I was on the edge of my seat watching for the oil to come out. Hi drama, Chickanic style.
I have a little Sthil MS180C that hadn't been started in 3 years. I poured out the old gas and refilled it with fresh. It started on the 3rd pull. I have multiple Sthil saws and trimmers, and I know a lot of YT small engine mechanics talk bad about Sthil 2 cycle oil, but that is all I've used for over 20 years with no problems. I did, however, buy an Echo backpack blower from the Chickanic and am running the Red Armor in it.
I have a pair of the MS 310 saws and had to do new oil pumps because i messed them up when i replaced the clutch drum and sprockets. Did not know they had to fit in the way they did. no real damage to anything but a half dozen chains got a good stretch to them. I have learned alot from watchin your vids covering the stihl saws so thanks for the information/education

When I watched the first part (checking to if oil is coming off the chain) I thought to myself everybody does that. I guess not. Thanks for showing what to do if I don't see oil flying off the chain. As for the chain brake I never activate that thing on purpose. To me it's for (preventing) accidents only.

I had problems with the covers around the clutch/brake melting on my MS461… and then the brake wasn’t working correctly. I pulled it apart and found the area around the brake band and brake mechanism was full of wood swarf and bar oil! I cleaned it all out and replaced the covers. Now, at least once a year, I pull those covers on my MS261, MS461 and MS661 and clean them out. No more related problems.
I dont cut everyday. Sometimes it may be weeks & weeks betwix saw uses. SO, I try to remember to pour
out the gas into my riders tank but if I did forget I do it before I cut & put fresh gas in. I use my saw so
infreq I mix up 1qt batches in a trufuel metal can. After the fuel in the can has sat around awhile I pour it
into my rider.

Wonderful. You might ought to mention the importance of keeping your bar groove and the matching holes in the bar that line up with the body of the saw. You would think that everyone should know that but some do not.

I'm surprised some people don't do this, I've always checked it's slinging oil and then recheck the tension before I start cutting, I'd rather know BEFORE everything is blue and smoking :P Years ago I have seen a few saws that got crispy (hire saws and customer saws) But the absolute worst of them all wasn't a chainsaw, it was a Husky concrete/demolition saw, some genius had greased the clutch, that thing caught fire, it went straight to the graveyard, the diamond blade was the only thing on it that could be saved. I have to assume it was the same genius that greased the clutch that ran it slipping until it caught fire, I wish I had seen it happen, VERY expensive hire saw when you have to pay for replacement :D

On a poulan pro, what goes into that tiny hole, on the right, under the metal plate that fits over the bolts? Compress air the dirt off and something popped now bar oil is dripping out.

I DO watch my Stihl's allot more closely, but they're two of the most expensive saws I own ! 🤷🏼♂️ Yes, they tend to be stingy. I'd rather pay for the oil personally. 😉

Did the overheating come from running it with the brake on and that caused the oiler to fail?
at one time they had lots of problems with the wire slipping on the worm gear (back in the '80's if memory serves me) especially in cold temps. that's about the time low temp bar oil became a thing.

We have had 7 small engine shops shut down and ordered to clean up the soil in their properties in my city forcing shop labor to pass $200/h in the remaining shops. One shop's cost to clean-up costs is over 700 thousand dollars under their quarter acre boneyard from tire fibres, oil, micro plastic and banned PFAS. To open a new shop everything has to be indoors or you must employ a E-Tech (College) or a P-Tech (university) certified engineering tech who only tests soil or concrete and doesn't touch any machines!
Also anything with mineral or vegetable oil on it, like your cardboard must be disposed as toxic waste and the driver/handler both needs Class 3 dangerous goods truck licencing and handeling training!
Glad I live here! Those regulations are insane along with those who impose and enforce them.
The rust is most likely heat corrosion.
And subsequent condensation and quenching of a hot surface. 😳
Be the only thing I wish that you would do in your videos is to wear a pair of boots or shoes. I know it’s hot outside but saving your feet is important. The safety issue is worrisome. Your videos are always loaded with good content.
I'm going to put a piece of cardboard out where I store my saws so I'll be reminded to check this.

I’m surprised that you didn’t rev up the saw to max and then SUDDENLY engage the brake. That does 2 things simultaneously: it checks out the functioning of the brake itself, and if it’s working properly it’ll tighten up the church to the crankshaft without it being excessive. I think that brake band is right at the edge of needing replacement because it’s so thin. The different OEMs have spec’s out for checking things like that. 😊

Knocking a hole in the top of your piston is not good? Who'da thunk that. :) Basic maintainence after use for me has always included pulling bar off and clearing out the oiling holes.

Thanks Bre I've put two oil pumps in my Stihl MS170 , its a pain taking the case/cover off . I buy them from Amazon , finding a metric screw to thread into them to pop them out is sometimes ruff around my work bench as I am old school sae type man, for a little brass pump its a pain in the arse
If the chain breaks your bleeding, please put chaps on.

My saw never gets clogged up. I like to use an air gun to blow out all the old saw dust .
Some people just shouldn't use a chainsaw. They're too stupid for it.
