  • Truck Driver Students! Our Backing Maneuver videos are short and easy to understand.
    CDL instructor Atom Guinn explains both Parallel Parking maneuvers in under 6 minutes. All CDL students must perform a Parallel Parking maneuver during their CDL Skills Test. This video gives new students a few reference points to use while backing.

    This video saved me and my classmates during our DMV Cdl testing a couple days ago. My instructors taught us to take the rear tandems and line them up against the cone. That technique caused four people from another school to fail on the parallel at the DMV testing site, because they were consider technically outside the line and would of hit the tractor beside them with their trailer. So while watching that class struggle to parallel, I remember watching your video on the parallel like I do everyday and I gathered my Classmates around to watch this video a couple times. We went 3/3 on the parallel and now we are all CDL certified. Thanks a million CDL COLLEGE !!! I learned so much while watching your videos and I will continue to do so on my trucking journey ✊🏿

    This video helped me greatly. One thing to look out for that threw me off was, the truck I was driving had the rear trailer tandems slid all the way forward. Splitting the line with the tandems in this cases was putting me a little too deep in the box. I backed up until the rear tire just barely touched the line and it worked.

    So you advise to start turning to the left once you start backing up ?

  • @ricardonelson8263
    @ricardonelson8263 9 месяцев назад

    That thing about steering to the right to go left only works in straight backing up instructors should stop teaching it like that because when it comes to backing in an alley or tight spot if you don't understand the relationship between trailer and tractor you're in trouble. When I just started learning straight backing, it was so easy for me I backed up through cones easily and for a good distance, The day my instructor said alley backing I always had to be pulling up to make corrections and couldn't understand why the trailer keeps coming around even after im steering in the direction that it's going to push it the other way. I sat down one day and thought about what was happening at the kingpin and 5th wheel and that's when it all came to me went back to training backing up the unit with no fear because I knew how it worked I knew how to set up and if I need corrections I know how to pull up so that I can correct the move. People Steering to the left to go right and right to go left get that out of your head.

    Hi Atom
    Question please about straight line backing is it better to watch the drift over the lines and correct in the same side of the drift with a little correction and back to center ? Or it s better to watch the sides of the trailer if one side goes bigger I correct in the opposite site ? A little confused here attending school next week
    Thanks a lot Mr Atom for your helpful videos
    And also Can I use the brakes during the straight line backing to slow the combination a little more?

    IN another video, while doing straight back up, the guy says to turn in the direction of where the trailer is veering off to. Ex: if in your right mirror you see the trailer going to much to the right line of cones, then turn your steering towards the right a little bit and come back to the center. Im confused with your video because you say the opposite? Thanks.

    What if there are only 4 to 5 cones on that vertical or parallel line? Most schools only put certain cones there, so what else can be used as a reference point when backing diagonally to that line?

    • @Cdlcollege
      @Cdlcollege  7 лет назад

      Confusing, Bruce. The side line is supposed to have 10 cones. The front and back lines should have 4 cones. Which lines are you referring to?

    • @brucealcoriza1606
      @brucealcoriza1606 7 лет назад +1

      Thanks for your quick reply. Anyway, I was referring to that parallel parking, driver-side maneuvering. What if there are only 4 to 5 cones or less? Some schools don't provide enough cones to their training spaces, (boxes, or whatever you wanna call it). Any other reference point or ways I can use?

    • @Cdlcollege
      @Cdlcollege  7 лет назад

      I would suggest using the back line of cones in the passenger mirror. If there are 4 cones on the back row, shoot for 2.5 to 3 cones (just like on the driver side parallel).

    • @brucealcoriza1606
      @brucealcoriza1606 7 лет назад +1

      I was talking about the reference point that you mentioned, the 8th or 9th cone on the parallel line. You mentioned use the 8th or 9th cone as a reference point. You said, stop when you see that 8th or 9th cone, when the truck is already straight (diagonal and about halfway inside the box). Not all schools uses enough or 10 cones to cover the entire line of that box. I hope you understand what I'm really trying to say...thanks, by the way. I'm considering to go to your school, if only you are authorized or takes the GI Bill to pay my tuition, I could have been enrolled in your school already...:( I really like your guys method or ways of teaching, I think you guys are very professional and you stand out from the rest of these CDL schools or instructors...:)

    • @Cdlcollege
      @Cdlcollege  7 лет назад +2

      Thanks, Bruce. What I typed earlier still holds.
      If you don't have 10 cones on the side line, you can use the passenger side mirror to spot 2.5 to 3 cones on the back line.
      Why do this? Because the length of the back line is 12 feet. The length of the side line is 85 feet. It's easier to work with 12 feet than 85.
      I can't believe that some schools operate without a cone budget...
      If this didn't help, let me know. Questions rock!

      todd gallagher hey todd im in truck driving school now, were you just kidding about turning with the bottom of the steering wheel? does that really make parallel backing easier?

      it's just a different way of saying the same thing as they said in the video; "Turn in the opposite direction of the way you want your trailer to move."

    The trucking school I am in is absolutely horrible, the instructors are awful. The way they explain things make no sense and then say we are not paying attention.
