Years ago, my roommate was about to reuse an old toaster oven that had previously caught fire. Unable to talk her out of it, I packed a suitcase with my most essential items and waited in the apartment lobby until she called to confirm that she'd finished cooking and nothing happened. It's one way to really find out what you consider most essential in your wardrobe and your life.

If I lost all my clothes now I would be in deep trouble because currently you can only buy shirts/blouses that are either super long and meant to be worn tucked or are cropped extremely short (all meant to be worn with high rise pants) and those look terrible on me. I just hope I can make the ones I have last long enough for the trends to change again. (At which point those who look better in tucked shirts will be in trouble.) I cannot for the life of me understand why fashion has to mean all stores offering only the exact same style to all people of all shapes and tastes... Why can't they keep at least a small part of the selection "off-trend", for those of us who care more about what actually looks good on us than being trendy?

Thinking of what you'd purchase starting from scratch is a great help with decluttering, because asking myself, "Would I buy this again?" quickly separates items I love from those that are just 'ho-hum' to be put in a 'maybe, maybe' pile and can consider donating. The end result will be a wardrobe I really love. Very helpful video, thank you!

Love this video Audrey! The title caught my attention for sure. My suitcase with 90% of my most loved work and play clothes was stolen from the car my coworkers and I rented on a business trip years ago. I felt so “lost” after the incident having to build a new wardrobe because I had really put a lot of time and thought into the pieces I bought (bargain hunting, etc.) It’s funny how our clothes are so much part of our identity and losing them feels like losing part of ourselves.

What an awesome way to identify your most loved pieces! Kind of like an “emergency preparedness” idea but for clothes.
    I think mine would be:
-a roll-tab utility button down shirt. I love these! I’d get short sleeve or 3/4 sleeve so I can use it warm weather and layer it during cold weather
    - a flutter-sleeve blouse. A little boho, a little feminine. Can pair easily with bottoms.
-A waist high midi skirt. I love skirts.
    -a boho peasant skirt
    -a long dress
-Ankle boots, like Thursday boots. My favorite are the slip on style
    - Tom’s wedges
    - Taos sandals
    - wooden necklace
    -statement earrings, and gold earrings
-a silk scarf and a wool fedora. These are staples all year round in my closet.

This is a good idea. I live in a climate with three distinct seasons - hot, humid summers, very cold winters, and in between weather in the spring/fall. A few pieces work as crossovers between fall/winter/spring, but I would need to create a least three lists. They would work when going on vacation to places with different climates too.
The most essential thing in winter would be a long warm down coat and some boots rated to -30 Celsius.

I'm starting to notice that the things I find essential- and gravitate towards the most- are neutral colors (which probably isn't that much of a surprise in some aspects). Taking away the instance of brown being a hot, trendy color for the fall season, there's just something very classic and timeless about the color in general. I'd also say the same for black and white, so naturally, I'd say that those three colors tend to make up the core of my style. Thank you for making this video, Audrey! 😊

While I think black looks incredibly classy, it can also look incredibly common and very casual. The place I live, it is extremely common to see multiple people wearing the same black shirt, jeans, and a mix of sneakers, boots, or Birkenstocks. I personally do not wear much black on top anymore for multiple reasons, but I do have one black top that is quite the exception. It is a longer sleeve with a higher neckline and very well cut back. I can wear it both front or back which gives me a lot of options for styling but I’ve actually found that it feels much different from what everyone else is wearing which is typically just a black T-shirt or tank top. I will also where are my necklaces backwards and let them drape down my back with the lower back line and it looks incredibly Elegant and unique from what everyone else is wearing and I get many compliments. While I’m seeing so many of the same styles going around, making unique twists like this separates you from everyone else while still enjoying the things you like. I really don’t want to blend in/fit in, I want to stand out now entering my 30s. I love seeing how you like styling these classic pieces in unique ways! That’s one of the things I appreciate the most about your channel. I am at a place where I need to really pair down my wardrobe so what I’ve decided to do is pick out the things I wear the most and just wear those for a while. Everything else has gone away in bins until I feel the inclination to shop. Then I go shop things I already have to see what I would “buy again”!

Honestly and I'm not saying this as an insult at all since I had the same problem: Work on your self worth! You have to see yourself worthy of buying the things you need (and on occasion the things you want when you can afford it).
Ask yourself if your children or husband or a loved one in general wanted this thing would you get it for them? If so you should get it for your self too. It might sound silly but use positive self worth affirmations it'll make a world of difference.

I am currently going through my closet, trying to sell some things but donating the vast majority. It is something I’ve put off for quite some time because I feel like I’ve wasted so much money and it’s hard to get rid of things. HOWEVER, I came to the realization that my body has changed now that I’ve gotten older and my taste has changed too. I’ve wasted a lot of time being uncomfortable in clothes that don’t fit. We get only one life, I deserve and you deserve to be happy and comfortable in the time we have left. Our past does not dictate our happiness, we do. As adults we get to decide things for ourselves and how or what we spend our money on. I find that the best thing we can get rid is the emotional baggage that has held us back from being happy all these years. It’s not about the clothes, it’s about taking back control and acknowledging that your joy matters. YOU matter. ❤️

I wore all black for years and have gone to more softness, charcoal, and muted blues. There is a feminine softness that is lost when we wear so much black. It's certainly classic and 'sharp'. Sometimes, for some people, it's harsh & hard. That blue sweater would look great with black pants.

Comment about the white sweater: I would buy a v-neck cashmere sweater and a cashmere scarf that go together. A cashmere scarf can warm the neck in cold weather -- when you want it to -- and can be removed if you get too warm. Get it in the right color and you can use it with a thousand other outfits. I bought a gray one from Fisherʻs Finery a few years back and literally wore it just about every day for over a year; I even took it with me on summer outings when I headed for the beach, where itʻs cooler (usually). For those of us on the other side of menopause, a turtleneck isnʻt the best choice most of the time, but I still want a sweater and a choice to wear something around my neck, or not. I could never understand it when my mom "didnʻt like anything around her neck" after menopause; now I do.

This was so helpful for me! I've been wanting to reinvent my style (lack thereof really 🤣 ) so this will be such a great reference for me. I was wondering if you might be able to do one of these for accessories as well?

Very interesting concept. I think many of us traditionalists would agree with your choices if not always the same colors. My one large difference is that I live in a desert and shoerts keep us alive four months out of the year.

      @polishtheday 2 года назад

Same here, except only for two months and there’s no desert here. It’s rarely cool enough for jeans so it’s shorts all day at home and cotton dresses, skirts and culottes when I go out.

I love this video! I also would love to see a series called “How to dress for…”. Someone mentioned a funeral. While that’s not the happiest of events, I would really love to see what you would wear. Much more useful than the “drinks with the girls” ideas we always see in RUclips! Thank you for your great work!

This came at the perfect time...I am clearing out clothimg that dpesnt work for me anymore. All my blazers I am keeping because different cuts, lengths and styles come and go amd I am not a slave to what is in in blazers...I have precious ones that best fit my body NONE are the wide oversize ones in style but I KNOW what works best for me.
What I am mostly purging are tops. Luckily I have a precious few like the boat neck you shpwed mine is a very high quality heavy knit 20 years o?ld and I do wear it every fall it is too jeavy a knit for any other ti e of year where I live. i also have a few favorite slacks I never did wear the supertight ones but I cannot wear unsewn pleats or wide ones so I will stick with what a I have and wear those. nd yes my pants are cropped at 5ft 4in. I lile cropped tops rather than lomg ones again due to being a short waisted petite. Mostly I am getting rid of textured tops I dont like anymore. Also mearly every print I am ditching I WONT be buying the oversize flowers trend not for me. My only purchase so far is a fishia blazer and shirt. I have all the basic colors. I am warm coloring so my browns from light to dark are all warm nrowns and camel is great for me.

I have been recently left without my most beloved clothing items. The incident includes my husband, and as we are not divorced you can conclude how forgiving I am 😂😂
Anyway, I am rebuilding my wardrobe almost from scratch as I am left with unpractical things which I was not really wearing. This really got me thinking what is necessary and what not for my style

I think what I like more about your stile is there are so in to enjoy the time and the place we’re you going to be. You always use expression like casual but you add something that makes the outfit some how confortable but also enjoyable. I wondered how would you dress a man. It doesn’t have to be just your age but someone who’s looking for that casual and enjoyable stile. I think the question is how would you apply the elements of your stile to a man. The reason is simple there are so many gorgeous men waisted their good look in bad stile and I’m sure man don’t care about stile but if there’s a way they can dress and be able to go to work and after that to a bar and after that have a business meeting and look like they’re fit it in (not underdress or overdressed) just that little think that makes them look out of the crowd.

I would like to ask you if you would like to make a video in the future about how to dress to a classical concert or theatre, evening or day representation. I live in San Diego and for some reason black looks "off" down here. It's very casual here and if anything people wear more of a charcoal gray and of course all the neutral colors.
