The snake handler wasn't told how the scene with the snake present was going to go, and wasn't told what they were going to do to the snake. Obviously, the handler was really angry about the snake being killed. They had to have him escorted off the set and paid him more, so he wouldn't take them to court. The movie was never intended to become a franchise, it was just meant to be a homage to the film Halloween. Success at the box office helped drive Paramount to want more films. The 80's were pretty much Friday the 13th films and Star Trek movies for Paramount.

Jason never drowned in part 1. In part 2, it is explained that he did survive and he lived like a hermit for 21 years and went on a killing spree when he happen to witness from behind the scenes his mother murdered.

"You see, Jason was my son, and today is his birthday..."
Fun Fact: Adrienne King's scream was the deal maker when she was auditioning for Alice.
Snake Wangler Fact: The scene with the snake was not in the script and was an idea from Tom Savini after an experience in his own cabin during filming. The snake in the scene was real, including its on-screen death.
Location Location Fact: The movie was filmed at Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco in New Jersey. The camp is still in operation and it has a wall of Friday The 13th franchise memorabilia to honor that the movie was set there.
Music Enthusiast Fact: Composer Harry Manfredini has said that contrary to popular belief, the famous "Chi, chi, chi, ha, ha, ha" in the film's score is actually "Ki, ki, ki, ma, ma, ma" and it is meant to resemble Jason's voice saying "Kill, kill, kill, mom, mom, mom" in Mrs. Voorhees's mind. It was inspired by the "Get her, mommy! Kill her!" scene in which Pamela Voorhees breaks mentally. Manfredini created the effect by speaking the syllables "ki" and "ma" into a microphone running through a delay effect.

There's a number of more comedic Halloween / horror movies. "Shaun of the Dead" (2004), "Idle Hands" (1999), "Death Becomes Her" (1992), "This Is the End" (2013), "Army of Darkness" (1992 - it's the 3rd movie of the franchise, but the first that really leans in the comedy), "Beetlejuice" (1998), "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (1993, though it also leans into Christmas, obviously), "Corpse Bride" (2005), "Ghostbusters" (1984). A few of those aren't scary at all, they just have traditionally "spooky" things likes ghosts and zombies in them.

I was around eleven, saw the movie on HBO, this was back in the 80's before cable and HBO was the go-to, anyway, after the movie was over, I had to ride my bike back home, and I don't think I ever rode that fast in my entire life... and it was only a movie. lol

The theory suggests that Mrs. Voorhees was aware of Jason's survival from the near-drowning incident. It claims she discovered Jason's almost lifeless body and concealed him in the forest, determined to prevent the camp from reopening. The near-drowning may have deprived Jason of oxygen, leading to significant brain damage, which could account for his impaired speech. This explains why Mrs. Voorhees seemed to be the voice for him in the original movie. Although this theory might seem a bit far-fetched, it showcases the imaginative extents fans go to, especially when explaining Jason's role as the antagonist in the sequel. It's believed that Jason witnessed his mother's rampage, culminating in a counselor decapitating her.

Jason takes over in part 2 and he finally gets the hockey mask in part 3, which was released in 3D. The first six movies actually follow the same timeline pretty good continuity. 2 through 6 are true sequels. Part 4 introduces Tommy Jarvis and 4 through 6 is often called the Jarvis trilogy in reference to his battles with Jason in all three movies. Beginning with part 7 and 8 it veers off somewhat. Part 9 “Jason goes to Hell” and part 10 “Jason X” is way off. The latter sees him in space! Then comes “Freddy vs Jason” which is awesome and the 2009 remake which takes elements from the first four movies and I thought was really good.

Hey there! I am a new subscriber, and am enjoying catching up on your reactions. I had to comment on what you said about expecting this to be more of a slasher. Friday the 13th is one of the early slasher movies, after Halloween, 1978 and 1960's Psycho.. In 1980 only a few slasher films were popular, so this was fresh and a pretty big deal. When Friday the 13th Part 2 came out, 1981, I remember people in the theater screaming out during the movie. Yeah, I am getting old. But as time goes on, and slasher films became more popular, newer movies had to out do the old. Friday the 13th was 1980. Scream was 1996. That sixteen years made a big difference in quality. But it's important to put yourself in the movies you are watching. imagine if it were real and you were there. It would be pretty scary. But I really enjoy your reactions. I will eventually catch up with the ones I haven't seen yet, and always watching for new reactions to some great classic films. Keep 'em coming.

I loved this reaction hahahaha very funny. I hear a lot of you youngsters (I know, but I assume I'm older lol) comment about the music choice at the end but this is a very good film technique called counter point. You use music that is the opposite of what is happening or has just happened on the screen to create a different mood in the audience. It can create a feeling of triumph or relief or it can cause confusion. The audience isn't supposed to be let in on the scare by the final scene and it's choices. The surprise ending wasn't a cliche in 1980. I am guessing that this isn't done anymore as nobody on here seems to get it. I think a sub is called for.

If they had never made sequels to this, I would've been fine with that. People automatically think of that dumb hockey mask when this movie comes up and it doesn't appear and becomes Jason's look until Part 3. The director, producer and writer (and the old Hollywood studio star, Besty Palmer) only set out to make a few bucks by literally copying the formula set by "Halloween" two years earlier. They literally thought they were just making a low budget Drive-in movie film that will be a hit with teens and young college kids, make their money and move on, but when it became a big hit, the studio immediately wanted a sequel and this is the movie that started the "slasher" genre in the 1980's. From that moment on, studios wanted slashers that would top anything seen before and so the gore was plentiful. Jason was just a ghost story that propelled a madwoman mother on a vengeful mission to make sure that camp would never open again, and assumably not take the life of another child. Respected film critics, Siskel & Ebert came down hard on this movie that shamelessly at the time, encouraged viewers to write to Betsy Palmer to vent their shock and disgust with her by accepting such a role. Pre-stalking days, different times. Well, that ploy ended up working for Ms. Palmer instead of getting hate mail, she became a legend to a whole new generation who accepted and appreciated her role. She never did horror again, mainly tv and theatre and of course, would appear at the conventions until her passing. The "final girl" in this movie was to have returned in the sequel for a continuation story on her character however, studio intervention and a change of director and crew from the first one changed the direction and so, she was sadly wasted and underused. Kevin Bacon...well, he went off to stardom maybe right after this film or one he did right after this, which led him to "Footloose ".

You need to realize this movie and movies like Halloween were made in the late 70s and early 80s. I watched the Hammer films like Frankenstein, Mummy, and Dracula in the 60s. When Halloween and Friday the 13th came out I thought they were the best horror movies made at that time. If you watch the 1978 Halloween you also need to watch Halloween 2 from 1981.

A lot of it requires you to develop muscle memory and unless you're going to play a classical guitar or play with a slide exclusively, callouses on your fingertips. BTW, he DEFINITELY was not playing that. On the other hand, Alice hitting the open strings later on may well have been recorded then and there.

Friday the 13th II shows a lot more of what you were looking for. Each film gets worse than the previous ones. You should watch it next. This film set the stage for the second film, and yes there are 10 in total. You also should watch Nightmare on Elm Street, which has Freddie Kruger. It is up your alley way. Halloween has Michael Myers wearing a William Shatner mask. That's what they said, anyway. I don't see how it could be a William Shatner mask. It looks nothing like him.
