In the scene where the soldier stands in the open door of the airplane and yells goodbye to his girlfriend, who is running alongside and almost bumps into structures, is a spoof of the film Since You Went Away (1944), which is a really good film, but rather long. David Selznick was trying to re-create the success that he had with Gone With The Wind (1939).
The funny thing is that there is (was) a video on RUclips that compared scene for scene 'Airplane' with the actual movie it was inspired by and you'll see that not much was changed.
My mom wouldn't let me watch Jaws but my uncle let me watch this and it's the first movie that I was actually in stitches in.. it was before my mother taught me that silly wasn't funny. :) Never laughed so much.. it was the unplugging of the runway lights that absolutely killed me lolol back in the day we didn't have a sex offender registry, we knew who they were and were never allowed to be alone with certain people lol. children knew.
Yes, the neighbors knew and even made jokes about the one on our street. We'd just moved to the city. We didn't know. I recently decided to confront him about all those years in my teens, only to find that he'd died not long ago after retiring from a career. So obviously he was never punished, never saw the inside of a prison. I left the message I'd intended for him on his funeral home memorial page in hopes that his children and grandchildren see it and open up about whatever he may have done to them.
@keetahbrough, I don't think I knew about the sex offender registry until I had kids. Always trying to keep them from harms way. @shallowgal462, do you think his kids and grandchildren knew? - Toni
I have seen lots of reactions to Airplane! and no one has ever mentioned that it's a jet plane but you hear propeller engine noise! And you have to read the credits.
It does make sense in a riot looking for a place to break out kind of way. In conedy, Toni makes a good "straight person" to your more comedic reactions. There was no PG13 rating back then.
5:10 “They don’t really do that, right?” Correct! Jet aircraft don’t have engines like cars. They have jet. Famously, on the wings. There’s no engine under the hood for checking the oil. :-) Also, an often missed joke is that the engines are jets, but exterior shots of the plane flying uses sounds from a propeller. :-)
People now don't get the joke of the many annoying zealots in the airport -- they were like mosquitos, everyone hated them. Also, a joke that I got the first time, but missed for about the next 40 years -- the nun tells the doctor, "you're wanted on the phone." In 1980, this would have been as likely as telling someone on a plane, "they need you in surgery." There were very much no phones on planes, so this diversion was a very minor joke that I just rediscovered.
The aiplane window cleaner is JIMMY WALKER; J.J FROM `GOOD TIMES". The captain is PETER GRAVES. From the original MISSION IMPOSSIBLE TV SERIES. CO PILOT IS NBA HALL OF FAMER, LAKERS, KAREEM ABDUL JABAAR.
If you can find it, there's a classic movie starring Jimmy Stewart called Harvey. It's a comedic drama following a guy who insists he's friends with a giant, invisible rabbit called Harvey. I won't spoil the ending for you; but I'm wondering if the humor might be more up the Mrs's alley. Movie release in 1950.
Peter Graves, and, Leslie Nielsen made this movie as great as it was. Their ability to deliver completely RIDICULOUS lines of dialogue with total earnestness, and, sincerity was AMAZING.
The beach scene is a parody of From Here to Eternity. "Lisa" is played by the same actress as Captain Stubing's daughter on The Love Boat, a TV sitcom set on a cruise liner.
This movie is always fun for me to watch to see how many of the jokes and more importantly, how many of the former stars they recognize in this movie. Basically, every male with gray hair was a former big time star parodying his roles that made him famous. The two exceptions being Jimmy J.J. Walker from Good Times who was the airplane mechanic checking the oil. And Kareem Abdul Jabber the really tall black pilot. If Toney cries during this one, I just don't know what to say. LOL. The little girl with the IV was on a ton of Love Boat episodes. Leslie Neilson was the Doctor and he always played serious detective type roles and was most famously the main character in the old sci fi classic movie "Forbidden Planet." Then later in the Naked Gun movies were he basically plays an expanded version of this character. The old guy that was always picking a bad week to quit something is Lloyd Bridges. Maybe the biggest star in the movie. He is Jeff and Beaux Bridges' dad and a big star from the 50-s60's.. Kramer is Robert Stack. Most famously from the "Untouchables" tv series from the 60's. He played Elliot Ness. And The Pilot is Peter Graves. He was the main dude on the original "Mission Impossible" tv show from the 60's. Oh, the old woman that speaks Jive played June Cleaver, Beavers mom on the Leave it to Beaver tv show.
Speaking of the young girl/heart recipient. "She looks familiar. Yeah, but I don`t know who she is though". Could it be she was the daughter of the captain on the "Love Boat". Unless I`m mistaken I think that`s her.
The ratings... It was generally left to the parents to decide what was acceptable for their kids to watch. It was more of a suggestion. This was before everyone got offended by everything.
Did you know this was an almost word-for-word remake of the 1957 film Zero Hour! from Paramount? And did you recognize the mom from Leave It to Beaver?
Another reference most don't know because the movie is so old (1940) is the story at 20:00 about George Zipp and win one, etc. That's a takeoff on the story about Notre Dame football in "Knute Rockne, All-American" and a dying player named George Gipp used as a motivational speech by famed legendary coach Rockne. The part of Gipp was played by Ronald Reagan.
Most people don't recognize that Howard Jarvis is the guy in the cab either. Or that a woman throws her baby in the air and runs away when the plane comes through the airport window (3:26).
@@popculturallychallenged The comedy she liked the most this year (we spend 1 week a year on vacation just watching movies in a hotel somewhere) was My Cousin Vinny, which was a surprise

Great movie. Fyi the actress who plays the sick girl was on the tv series Love Boat. This is not just a comedy it is a spoof movie extreme comedy. You should also see Top Secret 1984 from the same directors. A underrated movie but no less as funny and in my opinion is more funny.
This might interest you about this movie: ruclips.net/video/8-v2BHNBVCs/видео.html. The kissing on the beach scene was a parody of the movie From Here to Eternity. The little sick girl was on The Love Boat. One of the Monks was Joe Izuzu. The scene where the Capt is beating up all the people in the Airport, that's the way it used to be. You would be bum-rushed by all these knuckleheads with pamphlets, flyers, etc when you entered the terminal. Those days are long gone. Unfortunately, the "Johnny" character (Stpehen Stucker) died of Aids in 1986. He disclosed his illness to the media in 1984 becoming one of the first recognizable entertainers to do so. If you didn't grow up in the 70's you'll miss most of the jokes.
Also the horse lover, and "I like my coffee black...", and the whole totally inappropriate line of questioning about naked men in the cockpit. Funniest thing about it, is that is is a scene for scene remake of a totally serious drama with the same plot, on top of which were just a 'stream of conciousness' of silly jokes and visual gaga.
Thumbs down on this one guys. I dont get ppl who cant get the genius of slapstick comedy. Its meant to be ridiculous. I dont understand why comedy has gotten so boring. 1. I guess I picked the wrong week to stop watching "first time reaction" Airplane clips. 2. This movie requires more than one watch in order to catch as much as possible. Little things to look for: Ted was in the Air Force but at the bar he's wearing a Navy Lt. Uniform. Elaine's trombone sounds like a cornet. One of the fish was a freshwater catfish. A woman throws a baby into the air when the plane crashes through the window. Captain Kramer steps out of a mirror before leaving for the airport. The woman with the horse in bed is the creepy Captain Oveur's wife. She is also hitting on to Captain Kramer. It's a jet but the background noise is of a prop plane. The ambulance crashes after the plane lands. 3. Otto/Auto pilot has his own webpage on IMDB 4. Elaine has permission to sit on MY face.😍😋 5. IMVHO Airplane II is good too, destination moon.
This movie is a joke that manages to have a plot...borrowed from another movie. It is wall-to-wall visual jokes, situational jokes, wordplay & subverting expectations, so it requires several viewings to catch them all. There are jokes for everyone; so even if 3/4 of the jokes go over a viewer's head, there are still giggles.

I just noticed when the plane crashes through the window in the beginning, the woman holding the baby yeets it into the air.
I noticed that when I was doing the edit! 😂
Took me years as well to notice. Watched it over 100x and probably the last gag that I missed.
"We need to get this woman to a hospital"
"A hospital? What is it?"
"It's a big building with patients....but that's not important right now"
LOL
Awesome! 😂
Cool! Thanks for the info!
The funny thing is that there is (was) a video on RUclips that compared scene for scene 'Airplane' with the actual movie it was inspired by and you'll see that not much was changed.
I might have to go look for that video just for fun.... - Toni 🤓
Fun fact: The scene where Ted first catches up with Elaine was shot at LAX. That funky, 70s multi colored wall is still there today.
That's cool! 😃
No one ever reviewing this notices that when they are on the ground, the pilot shifts through the gears while they are moving.
I didn't notice that! I'll have to go back and check it out! 😂
I think that the nurse is Sandy Duncan. She played PETER PAN ON BROADWAY.
Oh cool! 😀 Thanks!
- Toni
@@popculturallychallenged I hope they didn't know firsthand.
Thank you!
The little girl heart patient later played Captain Stubing's daughter on the Love Boat.
Thanks! I knew she looked familiar!
Kareem was referring to Mr Bill Walton. One of the greats, as well!!!
Thanks!
5:10
“They don’t really do that, right?”
Correct!
Jet aircraft don’t have engines like cars. They have jet. Famously, on the wings. There’s no engine under the hood for checking the oil.
:-)
Also, an often missed joke is that the engines are jets, but exterior shots of the plane flying uses sounds from a propeller. :-)
I didn't even notice the propeller sound! 😂
I didn't realize how bad the airports were! 😂
Leslie Nielsen second slap on that woman hahaha
😂
The aiplane window cleaner is JIMMY WALKER; J.J FROM `GOOD TIMES". The captain is PETER GRAVES. From the original MISSION IMPOSSIBLE TV SERIES. CO PILOT IS NBA HALL OF FAMER, LAKERS, KAREEM ABDUL JABAAR.
Thanks! 😀
The beach scene is from the movie, “From Here to Eternity.”
Almost nobody gets that one.
Thanks! Might have to check that out someday!
‘That’s silly’ truer words were never spoken!
Very true! 😂
Thanks for the suggestion!
10:21 It's actually a spoof of 'From here to eternity' with Burt Lancaster.
Thanks!
One of the FUNNIEST movies ever made!
Peter Graves, and, Leslie Nielsen made this movie as great as it was. Their ability to deliver completely RIDICULOUS lines of dialogue with total earnestness, and, sincerity was AMAZING.
Robert Stack, too.
Agreed! 😃
@@ExUSSailoras well as Lloyd Bridges father of Jeff and Beau... Sea Hunt!!!
The beach scene is a parody of From Here to Eternity.
"Lisa" is played by the same actress as Captain Stubing's daughter on The Love Boat, a TV sitcom set on a cruise liner.
Thanks for the info!
Thanks for the info! They had a lot of big names in this!
The end credit scene.... the guy is still in the cab and gives Striker 20 more minutes!!!!
That guy is Howard Jarvis, the last person who would ever just sit in a cab with the charges racking up.
@cleonmagabeefy8500, I thought that was crazy. @ClayLoomis1958, I don't think anyone would have that kind of patience.... - Toni 🙃
13:17 - I think that patient became a regular on the Love Boat.
Thanks! I knew she looked familiar!
Speaking of the young girl/heart recipient. "She looks familiar. Yeah, but I don`t know who she is though".
Could it be she was the daughter of the captain on the "Love Boat". Unless I`m mistaken I think that`s her.
That’s where I remember her from! Thanks!
The ratings... It was generally left to the parents to decide what was acceptable for their kids to watch. It was more of a suggestion. This was before everyone got offended by everything.
I remember my parents watching the PG rated movies before they'd let me watch them when I was a young kid in the early 80's. Now I see why. 😂
The Guy washing the Windows was Jimmy Walker… Dynomite
the beach love scene was from “from here to eternity”
Thanks!
Besides the horse being a reference to The Godfather it is also alluding to the joke "hung like a horse"
😉
😂
If Toni wants some good movies with romance I recommend "True Romance", "Romancing the Stone", "Last of the Mohicans" & "Legends of the Fall".
Thanks for the suggestions!
You guys should watch hot shots part 1 & 2, the the naked gun parts 1-3 if you haven’t seen them already
Hoping to at some point. 😃
The heart recipient was from love boat
Thanks!
Another good reaction. :) The girl Lisa (Julie Whelan) is Vicki Stubing from The Love Boat.
Johnny for president
Thanks!
Did you know this was an almost word-for-word remake of the 1957 film Zero Hour! from Paramount?
And did you recognize the mom from Leave It to Beaver?
I didn't know about Zero Hour but I did recognize the mom from Leave it to Beaver! 😂
(3:33) I was 10 when I saw this at the theatres. When I saw the walls, I said to my Dad, Dad, they're at Chicago, O'Hare. Felt so smart.
Cool! 😃
Thanks! I couldn't remember what movie it was from! I remember it was Ronald Reagan but I couldn't remember which movie! 😃
@@popculturallychallenged Bonzo for the win! lol
Next time somebody says men and women are exactly the same, watch a man and a woman watching airplane there is a big difference

The actor playing the part of the pilot was Peter Graves he starred in the tv series “Mission Impossible “
Cool! I don't think I've ever seen the TV series. Might have to check it out!
The little girl heart transplant recipient was on the tv show love boat

Your wife is a literalist in the truest scense of the word. I had a feeling this would not be her cup of tea, which made it even funnier.
Glad you enjoyed the video! I give her credit for stepping out of her comfort zone and trying something new. 🙂
2:49 & on ... the difference in your expressions! 😹

Watched this with my 15 year old daughter, and the one part that broke her was the pilot creeping on the boy
My daughter just turned 15 and I'm debating watching this with her. I think she would get the humor.
@@popculturallychallenged The comedy she liked the most this year (we spend 1 week a year on vacation just watching movies in a hotel somewhere) was My Cousin Vinny, which was a surprise
The girl with the I.V. played Vicki Stubbings, the Captains daughter on Love Boat.
Thanks!
This movie is classic slapstick. Cast of major stars doing silly things makes it even better. btw, there are catfish in the ocean. The sick girl was on The Love Boat series.
Thanks!
Heart Girl was on THE LOVE BOAT. Jill Whelan
Yep!!! That’s right!! I couldn’t place her before. - Toni ☺️
Great movie. Fyi the actress who plays the sick girl was on the tv series Love Boat. This is not just a comedy it is a spoof movie extreme comedy. You should also see Top Secret 1984 from the same directors. A underrated movie but no less as funny and in my opinion is more funny.
Thanks!
Good lord, This jovial fun guy and this frigid, humorless woman.... I will never understand attraction.
This just isn't her kind of movie. I give her a lot of credit for giving it a try. 🙂
Thanks for the info! We both were kids in the 70's so I got some of the references but at this point I don't remember a lot of the 70's. 😂
A lot of people just arent wired for Airplane! I think you need a few shorts to love it.
True!
Did you notice the propeller sounds throughout the flight, on a jet plane?
Oh that’s interesting, I didn’t notice so will need to go back. Thank you!! - Toni 😊
@@BLAlley Ta! I knew that but couldn't recall it.

Thumbs down on this one guys. I dont get ppl who cant get the genius of slapstick comedy. Its meant to be ridiculous. I dont understand why comedy has gotten so boring. You cant take everything so seriously or youll have a heart attack before 50. Be ridiculous, have fun with nonsense. I hate to break it to toni, but LIFE doesn't make sense. If you only want to see things that make sense, dont watch the news. Dont listen to ANY politician. Dont watch kids or animals. Dont get out of bed bc everything is less sense as the day progresses and you interact with ppl because people dont make sense!! Once upon a time the fact the earth wasnt the center of the solar system didnt make sense. Or that there are bacteria in our bodies that we would die without, or which came first? The chicken or the egg? Very few things actually make sense. Welcome to life.
You are right, Life doesn't make sense.... I need to remember that! - Toni 🥰
"I didn't see this as a PG-rated movie you take kids to see"
... because back then, PG did not mean "kids movie". Hell, even G-rating didn't even mean "kids movie", it just meant it had nothing parents would find objectionable. PG stood for Parental Guidance specifically because parents needed to be cautioned that there could be stuff they didn't like.
... today, people think of PG-13 as "kids movie",.... my oh my how things have changed
Things have changed. I watch some of these movies and wonder how in the world parents allowed kids to watch this. - Toni 🤓

That's funny! I like Sigourney Weaver but I think they made the right choice for Elaine. 😃
1. I guess I picked the wrong week to stop watching "first time reaction" Airplane clips.
2. This movie requires more than one watch in order to catch as much as possible. Little things to look for:
Ted was in the Air Force but at the bar he's wearing a Navy Lt.
3. Otto/Auto pilot has his own webpage on IMDB
4. Elaine has permission to sit on MY face.😍😋
5. IMVHO Airplane II is good too, destination moon.
It is an Asian elephant in Africa.
Thanks for the info!
I'm still noticing things I never noticed before after multiple viewings! 😂
You might like Airplane 2, the sequal.
I might have to check that one out on my own. 🙂 -David

The dance scene in the bar where they met with the disco music playing and he pulls off his uniform and all of a sudden he’s got the white outfit on that’s a spoof of the movie “Saturday Night Fever “ that was popular at the time.
I haven't seen that movie in years! 😃

When I showed my teens this movie they did not find it that funny because many of their generation do not like Dad jokes lol. I will have to play it for them again now that they are in their 20s to see if it is different now lol

PG-13 didn't exist in 1980. Viewer guidelines changed substantially in 1984. PG-13 was added at that time (among others).
I remember when Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom came out and changed the rating system. Still remember the first PG-13 movie I saw in theaters after that - "Red Dawn" 😃
You two are like me and the lady I am with. I have an "open, laugh at anything, finds humor is the goofiest things" sense of humor while she has a cold "this had better be funny and have a reason behind it" sense of humor. It is very hard to get along with those types of people that have to analyze and pick things apart.
I know right?? 😂😂
Because of POLITICAL CORRECTNESS, this film would be difficult to make!!!
Agreed. I don’t think this could be made today.
This is my FAVORITE comedy! I loved David's reaction to this. I always laugh just as much now as I did back then. David's reaction got me laughing so much my hubby had to come in the room to see what was so funny. When he saw what I was watching, he sat down & watched with me. We quote this movie often.
