A-Rod won a World Series. For him to say this is the best moment he’s had on a baseball field just goes to show you how truly special and rare this team was.
I think it's not so much the team but that those earlier experiences resonate with a person differently than the later ones when you're more experienced and perhaps more jaded.
Problem with this retelling, you didn't get the context of: the Mariners were on the verge of losing their team and there was no funding for a stadium. This double changed that, and the Mariners stay in Seattle off of the Bat of Edgar Martinez, and the Legs of Griffey. By all signs, the Mariners were NOT supposed to make it to the playoffs, and they were NOT supposed to win this series. They were NOT meant to stay in Seattle, but they just refused to lose.
This video is meant to be a clip, not a segment. I'm sure you can go find those 15-30minute videos about the context of what is happening in this video. This video is meant as a clip for people who already know about the context. Come on dude, it's really not that hard to figure that out, smh.
Joey was a very underappreciated player. He was not Babe Ruth but he did all the little things. He could bunt, get on base, walk, get clutch singles. When you talk about a player who understood the fundamentals of the game, Joey was one of the best at that.
Fifteen year old me was at that game with my dad, uncle and brother. We were in the left field nosebleeds with our popcorn and peanuts. If you were a young man in Seattle in the 90s, Griffey was a hero to you before this game. This play just further cemented his place in the city and our hearts. After The Double, 59,166 fans screamed until our voices cracked and hugged the complete stranger next to us. Everyone sang Edgar’s name in unison as we went down the concourse towards the exits. Just absolutely high. Best sporting event I’ve ever been to, hands down.
One of baseball's most exciting and wonderful moments. Joey Cora's play at first. Edgar's perfect hit. Jr's race to home. AND we beat the Yankees! That was one fine day.
The older generation of my family still bring up this moment. I hope and pray we get something in the near future before they’re all gone ! Let’s go Mariners!!!
I don't care if the Mariners don't ever win a WS or ever make the playoffs again. This 1995 season, despite falling short, was one of the greatest things I have ever seen in sports. I'm a Seattle sports fan in general and we all know how difficult that is. But I was a junior in high school living in Washington during the 90s and the entire state was in love with the Ms. At 2:26 A-Rod mentioned that this was one of the greatest moments he ever experienced in his life, which says a lot because he has seen and done it all. This 1995 team was special....Griffey, Edgar, Buhner, Wilson, Tino, Randy, Joey, and a whole bunch of bench players who each played a pivotal role in the magic.
What's the beef with A-Rod these days? The guy is reformed and giving all his energy and talents to baseball as an analyst and commentator. He obviously disgraced himself by cheating and he had a bit of an ego once upon a time but from what I can tell he's genuinely turned over a new leaf. His sincere love for the game is evident and I think he's been a big net-positive since retiring and inking a new chapter.
A-Rod always gets emotional when he talks baseball. Find any clip where he recalls his career. You can really get a feel of how much the game meant to him and how important he felt it was to succeed.
Could you imagine a lineup that goes Griffey, Edgar Martinez then Alex Rodriguez? The fact that the 90s M's didn't even reach the World Series is crazy
Man it’s sad that Seattle team never won a championship . Well deserved for all those great players . I’d never forget that moment one of my best memories of the kid
I went from San Juan to Cooperstown for Edgar's induction and a family that came from Seattle sat nearby that afternoon before the begining of the ceremony. They stood up for a photo shooting and when the camera guy said the typical 'Say Cheese' I interveened and said "Hey, why not Say Ed-grrrrr !!!". Oh my, they all started to laugh and you guessed it, they went crazy yelling "Ed-grrrr !!!" during the entire photo session, it was so funny !!! When they finished the shooting, the patriarch of the family came to shake hands with me, he looked at my Team Puerto Rico jersey and PR cap and acknowledging my country in a very respectful, emotional way he said: "And Thank You, for him, he saved Baseball for us there in Seattle". That was so unexpected that I think I went speechless, then tried to answer something like We in Puerto Rico are very proud of him too, but don't remember exactly what I said, it really moved me and still does. Right now writing this I'm tearful, recalling that 1-derful moment. It was an afternoon I'll never forget, the Weekend of my life.
Thanks for that story. Where does Yadier stand among Puerto Rican players both past and present among the people of PR? I read somewhere he can hardly walk down the street in San Juan without being surrounded by fans. He's always made it known he's from PR and has been a wonderful representative.
@@Garrett1240 I wouldn't be surprised if fans are around Yadi wherever he goes here but I don't think that actually happens, fans are very respectful of the privacy of our big leaguers. But every time Yadi, Carlos Delgado or any of our stars, past or present announce a fund raising event for their charity foundations people do respond. We consider Yadi second only to Pudge among our numerous quality catchers and are confident he'll follow him to Cooperstown.
M’s got such a great hand dealt for the bottom of the 11th, top of the order and the perfect person to hit with runners on in the corners. If it had been a different part of the lineup this probably doesn’t happen.
I remember this so clearly still. The greatest single moment in Mariners history!!!! My oh my!!!! I was 13 years old. How fast time flies by. Hopefully the Mariners can get back to greatness with team we have now. Just lost a Heartbreaker to Boston. Got shut out at home. 6 games under .500 let's see how I'm feeling in September
I love the shot of Griffeys legs pumping.......hes not trying to score hes going to score. The two most exciting plays in baseball. A triple and scoring from first to home. I know alot of people say the inside the park home run is but that usually occurs on a bad defensive play. With a good placed ball in the outfield, and then you see the runners determination with each stride. That's great baseball. This play and sid bream slide to home. I love them both. Beam slide was a runner who didn't have much but boy he gave everything he had and you saw it when he couldn't get up. I love baseball like this.
Mattingly argued that Joey ran around him and should have been declared out but you can see here that Joey ran in a straight line all the way from home plate to firstbase, a masterful, 1-derful running play !!!
@Harry Engel Cameron never is here without the Griffey trade and neither is Garcia without the Johnson trade. Only way to get pieces like that is to trade superstars. Mariners don't have the money to acquire depth with the money those guys were making in my opinion
For the longest time I thought that the ump had missed the call and Joey was actually out, but after examining the play very closely many, many times, the ump really made an extraordinary call and was correct. The tag missed him.
Can we just take a moment to acknowledge how much of a villain Jack McDowell looks like? Like even his name has a villainous tone to it. I think when you look back at this moment, you just realize that there was a 0% chance the mariners were gonna lose.
Joseph Nickell wow you totally owned the comment section of a nostalgia video about the magic of the 90s Mariners. Good job! No shit the mariners suck.
I was/am a die hard Mariners fan and so of course I hated Pay-Rod (overall he’s kind of proven to be a douche so that hasn’t changed much, but I don’t waste time hating). But I forgave him a little bit when he said it was probably his best moment on a baseball field and he actually looked like he meant it. I remembered a bit how I used to feel when he was a Mariner, and we loved him like we did Griffey, Edgar, Big Unit, Bone, Cora, etc.
Greatest sports moment for me, the stadium was electric, may have been a dump, but no modem stadium can compare to the craziness of the kingdome from 95-98
A-Rod won a World Series. For him to say this is the best moment he’s had on a baseball field just goes to show you how truly special and rare this team was.

Underrated that whole year and that whole series. Dude was a baller no doubt.
Always was. Its 2021. I'm 40 from jersey my whole life. Edgar.. cora.. buhner... obviously jr.. just a GREAT TEAM
He was underrated the whole time.
25 years later and I still stress out about how close Joey Cora is to being tagged out
And being dangerously close to being outside the base line.
