Oh Dave. If only you could've seen these 2022 Seattle Mariners. They did it. They broke the curse. I can only imagine how good it would've sounded to hear you call out the walk off home run that put us back to October baseball. I was way too young to understand even words the last time we were there, and what I wouldn't give to have you back just for one final playoff game for us. But I know that regardless, you'll be with us in spirit, sitting next to Rizzs and Blowers and Sims. You'd really like Goldy, too. I'm sure you two would have an absolute ball in the broadcast booth. You've been such an inspiration for me in announcing and commentating, and you will always be my favorite announcer. Thanks for all the memories. Love and miss you.

Listening how he could broadcast a game will never be touched again. Dave had the ability to call a game with equal enthusiasm that had shown no difference whether it was mired in mediocrity or with one with late playoff implications equally. Granted there was always a bit of a home field advantage when the Mariners did something extra special that deserved an extra dollop of mustard. He was graced with the ability to transport someone into the environment, and paint the actions and surroundings with his words. I just wish that down the road we are graced with baseball broadcasters that can equal the talent and skill he carried and shared with us all.

I cannot count, or even begin to remember the numerous nights I was returning home in the Pacific NW, even as far as Southern Idaho, and listening to the game, highlights, and post-game. I would be tired, but his call of the game would keep me going. Rick Rizz played his role so well. Dave was the star, everybody knew it. People say Junior saved baseball in Seattle, but Dave exemplified the sport, called the game, and if you could visualize it, put you on the field, in the on-deck circle. His call of Dad and Junior going back-to-back has always resonated with me. Had the privilege of meeting him and Rick one day. What a remarkable man, both of them. Dave, you are missed sir!

2:23 "Swung on and a fly ball hit deep into the gap in right center field. The Kid on his horse, back to the warning track, THE WALL, MAKES THE LEAP AND MAKES AN UNBELIEVABLE CATCH! My oh my!! He is down at the 380' marker. And it's one of the most incredible catches you will ever want to see. There is no way a human being gets to that ball." My favorite part of this call is how quickly he gets all those words in as the play is happening and the way he raises his volume when Griffey gets to the wall. Dave was an absolute treasure. Not even a Mariners fan, I just love listening to his calls.

On another adventure in my dad's '89 Silverado, the little monochrome screen reading 710 AM as Dave's glorious voice filled us with every emotion imaginable...Dave defined my childhood. When Dave passed, I called my dad and he immediately had to hang up...the feeling was mutual, it was like a losing a close relative. We would mute the TV just to listen to him on the radio. As life is constantly changing, he was the consistent voice that was always there to greet us every summer. His voice still fills me with goosebumps, just as it does with tears. Dave called it. “The Mariners would love to get a base-hit into a gap, and they could win it with Junior’s speed…and, the pitch…” Of all the great calls, by the greatest, that call stands out as his very best. That moment was thee ultimate moment in Mariners history, so it only makes sense that it would be his best - and most famous call. Love you, Dave!

I can't care quite as much about baseball without his voice that game out of the radio of my father's pickup as he drove all over the 509 or 208... the voice of killdeer in the pasture and Dave Niehaus on the radio were my signs of Spring. @2:43 of course (this play was before my time but I knew of it as a kid), Junior was injured by that catch... I've been through thinking I was really injured and wasn't and thinking I was fine but wasn't... I believe in just wishing for the best and otherwise waiting.
@3:31 "19 long years of frustration is over" 😅
@4:24 I ran out down the driveway and down the road yelling like the kid I was. I can't do that if the Zags win the Final Four over UCLA and the championship on Monday. But I have more sophisticated ways to celebrate, I suppose...
