  • A few weeks ago we did a live stream of us working out "Destiny Unbound" at rehearsals for our upcoming tour. Got a lot of requests to make this fly on the wall experience available again, so here you go. Keep in mind, this is a rehearsal, so you're gonna see all of the steps of us working this out (but we think that's what you want)!

Is it the 16th note upbeats Fishman plays that you want to be hearing?

Syncopated means accenting the weaker beats... like upbeats instead of down beats such as how snare pops on the 2s & 4s creates a back beat, or punching the accent onto the ees, uhs, & ands making it even more syncopated. (Such as 1-ee-&-uh-2-ee-&-uh... etc.) Syncopation makes music danceable.

I think Mike was meaning to say monophonic (having a single unaccompanied melodic line) & monorhythmic (having a single rhythm or tempo.) That is often confused with syncopation (stemming from the confusion between synchronization.) This would be opposed to polyphonic, which is often employed in improvisational jazz (like in the Dixieland classic "when the saints go marching in,") and polyrhythmic such as West Saharan drum beats. For example, Split Open & Melt jam often has a polyrhythmic 5/4 - 4/4 overlap.

BTW - Mike if you read this... OGOGO is my favorite album of the last decade. More than the recent phish albums... more than Bowie's Blackstar or Gaga's Joanne. I hope you do a follow-up to OGOGO before you mix it up! I'm trying to get to a show on the west coast like you promised me at the boulder show. Maybe do another live stream? I need a great version of Spock's Brain on video. Stay real, Mike!
