that is my grandparents land... as a child me and my brother would walk up that hill and there were Geodes the size of an adults fist just laying on the hill, me and my brother would pick them up and smash them against each other as we walked to and from the pond to go fishing. the biggest ones we found in that area are about the size of a bowling ball.
As you can see from the video the geodes look out of place from the surounding matrix which is normally a loose blue-grey shale or a yellowish mudstone. Some are round others have a flat bottom or look a little squashed. In any event they are easily identified from the other rocks.
Jacobs mine is located about mile south of Hamilton IL off Hwy 96, County Rd 1220. It is easy to find there is a sign on a fence on the hwy. Gary Jacobs is a great guy, even if he is not there a map shows you how to get to the mine and he uses the honor system for paying. Just put on the seat of the pickup truck. Last time I was there it was $18.00 per 5 gal bucket full.
Keokuk Geodes are found in the upper and basal sub-units of the Lower Warsaw formation. These sediments were deposited by the Mississippian epicontinental sea that covered most of the interior of the U.S. 250 million years ago. Because their exterior shell is harder than the surrounding rock they are not destroyed by erosion and weather out as distinct entities. The geodes can be found loose in the creek bedes where the exposures are located. My other video shows geodes in situ.
great video. Do they let you collect even if it's raining? I also wonder if my car will make it across that stream if they've been getting lots of rain. thanks for any info
*saw another comment that geodes can be sphere/frisbee so i hav to ask* how would you tell a geode from a rock without braking it open [ignoring the fact ur at a place FOR geode mining]..i mean if u go to a place (that you dont know what stuff there is to mine for] and. u see a ball shaped rock its a geode or.. what? or are geodes like almost/perfectly smooth? so if u see a not smooth one, its not it
every holiday I go to france and theres is a place near to where I am going to stay where they've found amethyst. is it possible to find a geode there? PS: its by a field so it will be easier to look for them.
well i mean um if u dig and find a rock and a geode how would u tell diff [ i mean u can see that the surrounding matrix vs geode and so its not surrounding matrix therefore must be geode so geodes are mostly found in loose .. uh .. areas.. not like ..idk.. bah xD i'm trying to ask because i am writing a story and i do not know where to place the geodes [not like a specific state i mean like in a cave or etc]

Jacob's Geode Mine is located just south of Hamilton in west central Illinios in Hancock County
From my info there are no geodes in France. There are thundereggs in the south near Cannes, but the area is not open to the public for prospecting.
I look forward to seeing it.
lots of geodes in Kentucky.. i have some that are pale lavender...
Good luck and have fun !!!
Yes, some can be quite valuable. I have seen large Dewdrop Giamond geodes for as much $500.00
There are some good ones through out Keokuk over by the river.
i found one because of you
