Couldn’t agree more with the recency bias here. If Lando loses the WDC by a few points, his fans will turn to this race and Hungary as the reason he lost and not instances like Imola, Spain, Austria, and Silverstone. That's why I hate the narrative of "if Lando loses by X points, it's because of Oscar" - like no? There's many opportunities where Lando could've gained points and he didn't either by his or the team's error. It's not like Lando's WDC hopes should be resting solely on the shoulders of Oscar.

@@user-wu1uk8ce9k We have to be honest. McLaren is still making a mistake by not trying to get him absolutely every single point possible. Redbull will sacrifice Perez at the drop of a hat to maximise the points for Max. If McLaren wants Lando to win it they should be doing the same. And I totally agree that Lando doesn't deserve the WDC this year as much as Max does. Doing the best is one thing, but the attitude "not desperate / not gonna beg for a pass" to me means his pride (winning with just his own merit) is more important to him than winning the WDC ASAP at all cost. Max is doing EVERYTHING to win another WDC; ANOTHER WDC (yes, he still wants another one and wants to win every single damn race unlike how Lando unenthusiastically celebrated his 2nd career win last weekend.) I don't want to see someone win the WDC who wouldn't put their everything into it. Rather see Oscar or other drivers fight neck to neck with Max

Talented, but not a force of nature like Senna, strategist, but not boring like Prost (he is a legend, though) and cunning and brave in his way. If you see, Piquet didn't have family support and started late in autoracing. With that background, Piquet (like Fittipaldi) should be more praised by fans, specially brazilians who only remember Senna.

Right now at this moment in time, I am unconvinced that Lando *deserves* to win this 2024 WDC. Kimi’s ‘07 win was deserved because of his consistency at the top, even with a car that lacked pace.
It was just the McLaren mess that year with rookie Lewis’ end of season mistakes that caused them to lose.
Which btw, is a totally different McLaren situation compared to today’s McLaren team problems. That was still the Ron Dennis days HOWEVER, I’ve never understood why THEY let themselves have two number 1’s also.
Like why didn’t they tell Lewis, a rookie, to be a good teammate and support reigning champion Fernando who’s leading.
    Like derrr…
At the time they looked and said,
“Well, since we’re the fastest and we have no competition, let’s let them race.”
Sure enough they let them race for the best man to win and fucking LOST.
    Totally their own fault.
So yeah, Kimi won those last races and the championship so I disagree, he did deserve it.

its so weird to me that oscar has been fucked over by the mclaren strategy (so has lando but i feel like oscars ones have been worse) but now as soon as oscar decides to do his own thing its as if mclaren have been babying him and looking after him this whole time?? which is just not true. Look at silverstone or Hungary

I mean sure, but both of them are statistically possible of winning the championship. Only Lando has a realistically possible chance of winning it, which is why they think they should prioritize Norris.

From what’s been bandied around, it seems like maybe there’s a cultural difference between an American take on team orders and what the Brits are spewing. Don’t get me wrong - I’m a huge anglophile, but all this “McLaren aren’t being ruthless enough and they need to help Lando win the championship with team orders” while talking out the other side of their face that F1 is a meritocracy … like how does that even square? Meanwhile, on the other side of the pond, including you guys (thank goodness I watched your podcast today because I kept vomiting in my mouth at having to hear every other podcast call for team orders - all British) - it’s like how tf are you proving to yourself and the world that you’re the best if you need your team to tell your teammate to move aside for you ?!? If you are the best and deserve to be WDC, then take care of the business yourself - don’t expect someone to fall on their sword for you. Because then winning that title is a JOKE.

1:08:49 Italians only know art. When they build a car, they aim to make the finest car in the world. They want to make the best food in the world. Historian John Keegan cites this as a factor in their loss in WW2 - industrial capacity, being able to produce weapons of war at a greater pace than attrition, largely won the war for the Allies. Italy only knew how to produce masterpieces, e.g., they built incredible planes during the war but were so focused on making the best planes possible that they couldn’t come anywhere close to keeping up with losses.

Lando will always be a good not great driver despite being Zac’s “son.” Same for George - legend in his own mind. Said before in F2 Lewis, Max, Oscar all obviously showed true greatness. McLaren a hot mess without focus on getting maximum pts per race. Lewis going through the emotions w passing the torch. Still believe he can get his 8th at Ferrari 💪🏽💜 I still don’t see greatness in Kimi but will bow if he proves me wrong; he’s giving me Lando/George vibes. He might grow into a dominant car but then is he more great or the car had more to with it? Just like Lando who needs the most dominant car. Btw how’s that Karma feeling Lando after all the venom you’ve spewed against Lewis since ‘21? 🤌🏽😎 I’ll never say Max deserved that WC but Merc made so many mistakes that year it shouldn’t have come down to the last race for Lewis. BUT yes Max can and does drive the wheels off of that RB regardless of how the RB is performing. I stick by what I said since 2021 - everyone needs to watch their backs because Oscar is coming for them.

As a McLaren fan, it pains me how the team continuously screw themselves over and destroyed Lando's chances (if not already) of a world championship title - even Charles could overtake with points at this rate!
Imagine the prestige of winning both the constructors and drivers championship - these opportunities seldom come along and are fleeting - McLaren must get a grip on their strategies, radio communication and team orders!

I think at this point, it's harder to be a McLaren fan than a Ferrari fan. Hats off to Nico asking the hard question to Zak's face before AND after the race. I haven't thought about the contracts could be playing at McLaren. Good point there.

For the newer fans, WCC is greater than WDC, always. Zach wants to beat Christian no matter what, and both McLarens finished ahead of both Redbulls. If McLaren wins the WCC and Max wins the WDC, Zach will be the happiest fucker on the planet.

God I love Nico in the commentator box. I love Brundle but was sad when it wasn’t Nico in the Quali or Race commentating. He’s so funny and open. Just threw out the Alpine selling thing and blatantly says how much they’re worth and he probably could buy the team. Just great. If someone told me he’s actually Jesus I’d probably say, I can see it.

Genuine question: why would McLaren care if Lando won the WC or not as long as they win the Constructors? Nobody calls Max 3 time Red Bull Champion, they call him 3 time world champion. What tangible benefit is there for a team to have their driver win a WC besides bragging rights?

The only thing I wish F1 would take from nascar is making teams an after thought. During one of those races I can barely tell who’s on whose team. If F1 had unique liveries, maybe people would be more receptive to teammates actually racing each other instead of hampering team orders as an essential part of strategy. Let them race, tally your team points at the end, move on to the next race.
