The cross I bear that you gave to me. Its not a physical cross. If you bear a cross it means you have a personal suffering. She's saying it's not fair for him to to give her this pain and misery but not be around to see it or care.

You're kinda right. It's actually a figurative and a literal cross she's talking about. She used a gift he gave her (a necklace) as a symbol of carrying /wearing a sign of her love for him, and when he took the cross back after leaving her....well this song happened lol. It also gives you imagery of Jesus carrying the cross, which showed his dedication and love for God...and was very painful for him to carry.

I'm sure others have noted already "The cross I bear" refers not to him giving her an actual cross but rather it's an idiom that means the pain he has caused her, and that's she's still suffering and she's not gonna let him remain ignorant to what he did, nor just pass it off like it's nothing.
Here's something about the phrase "A cross to bear" from thefreedictionary "A burden of misfortune, guilt, or other suffering. The term comes from the story of Jesus’s crucifixion, in which a passerby named Simon the Cyrene was stopped and told to carry the cross to be so used to Calvary, the place of execution" They made Jesus do this in order to make him suffer.

She's a great singer. No doubt about that. But in my mind what makes it a great song is the sick funky improvised bass line by Flea of the red hot chili peppers.
The story behind it. Not sure if this really happened. What i read was: Flea walked in(guess the same studio where the rhcp was recording). He listened to the track and felt the bass line was weak. And the bass line was recorded in 1 take. Jammed full of improvisation. If you know flea's work, you can recognize him instantly.
On the radio in Europe/Netherlands this song was not controversial at all because of a f word. They aired Rage against the machine - killing in the name. Even Type o negative - my girlfriends girlfriend got into the charts. They were controversial at that time. Great band btw with a very unique sound.
    Review love you to death.
