    Knoebels deserves a lot of credit for reviving wonderful old rides. May not be the fastest,highest, or most intense, but there is nothing else like it.

    • @mhtube01
      @mhtube01 9 лет назад +7

      Couldn't agree more. With this generation it's all about insanity when it comes to roller coasters. The bigger and faster it is, the better. That's not necessarily true. A lot of times the older rides are the best, especially wooden coasters if they're well maintained. Phoenix and Twister are two of the best woodies I've ever ridden and I've ridden a lot and Knoebels has some of the best flat rides of any park out there. Not to mention they give you much longer rides for a lower price.

      mhtube01 Well said. couldn't agree more. I love Knoebles. I live a little more than 50 miles from the park and try to visit every year. My home park though is Hersheypark.

    Flying Turns was still being built the last time I was at Knoebels. I went off to college and later moved out of the area so I never got to ride it! Glad to see the pov! 😊

    So that's why it's called Flying Turns. The cars went higher up then I anticipated. If I ever get the chance to go to Knoebels I shall check out this ride. (and the rest of the rides I keep hearing great things about)

    • @randomtraveler9854

      "Flying Turns" is actually the generic word for several wooden bobsled coasters removed decades ago. The ride is basically a recreation of an extinct coaster model.

    tbh when you first get on it and come off the tracks for the first time, you think "eh this ride isn't too fast or really thrilling" but when you get to the second part and you go off the tracks from higher up it goes a lot faster and it's much more thrilling!! amazing ride, would definitely recommend it!

      You have to keep in mind, the original flying turns were built when H&S laws were much less strict. New laws are way too strict so making these nowadays is almost impossible, so the fact that they even tried let alone succeeded is amazing.

    This is for everybody on here saying that this isn't a very intense ride. I've ridden this a few times already and it may not be as fast or as big as other roller coasters being built, but once you get going, this ride is probably more fun than any other new coasters opening. I think it is going to be the best new roller coaster of 2014!!!

    This ride is cool it takes back to the roots of the roller coaster

  • @SeekerLancer
    @SeekerLancer 6 лет назад +8

    Most of the time it took to make the ride was spent on developing cars that were safe and reliable and that was largely out of the park's control. They also had to battle with flood damage while waiting for car prototypes that worked they way they wanted.

    • @randomtraveler9854
      @randomtraveler9854 3 года назад

      If I understood correctly the cars once used on Flying Turns models would not pass inspection today. So they had to create a new type of car from scrach.

    The 3-car train zigzags back and forth wildly along the sides of the constricted wooden trough, creating a unique uncontrolled, claustrophobic sense to the action, but the main part is a very short ride, barely over 30 seconds. Still, it's worth riding once for the experience since there is nothing else like it in the US.
    Note that the lines are usually slow because they typically only put one adult in a car, or two if kids are along. This is because there are weight limits and weight distribution issues that require careful loading; overweight riders are not allowed.

    Alpine coaster = Narrow-gauge roller coaster that can be ridden in the winter.
    Bobsled coaster = Roller coaster with u-shaped track similar to a bobsled run or water slide.
    Alpine slide = Roller coaster similar to a bobsled coaster, but with single-person cars like an alpine coaster. Track usually made of concrete, and is much narrower because of the tiny cars.

    This ride is so similar to the Flying Turns ride at Euclid Beach Park in Cleveland, Ohio.....the park closed in 1969. I rode the Flying Turns there from 1959 - 1969. I'm not sure of the build date for that ride, but I think it was built in the 30's. I think the Euclid Beach version was a little faster and longer, but I'm looking forward to riding the new one this year. Thanks to Knoebels for not giving up on their beautiful new Flying Turns!

      Tom Green It's not the same coaster. This one had to be built completely from scratch because all of the previous ones were either destroyed by fire or scrapped, including the one at Euclid Beach. However a copy of the blueprints from the one in Cleveland were used in helping design this one.

    Certainly not the Flying Turns the Forest Park Highlands in St. Louis had. It only had one chain lifted hill and the rest was all the wooden trough shapes to the bottom. Probably is a good idea since it takes a rather extended route which gives you more for the money.

    • @mhtube01
      @mhtube01 10 лет назад +1

      I'd say it's worth the wait. It's a one of a kind ride, nothing like anything else out there so you have nothing to compare it to basically. It doesn't go very fast but it doesn't have to, it really throws you around some of the turns but it's very smooth and has it's own kind of thrill. Next time you go, try and go during the week and get there when the parks opens and go straight for Flying Turns. You won't have much of a wait then.

    • @hattiem.7966
      @hattiem.7966 7 лет назад +2

      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riverview_Park_(Chicago).The former grounds are now home to Riverview Plaza shopping center, the Belmont District Police Station, DeVry University, a manufacturing company and Richard Clark Park, part of the Chicago Park District. The south end of Clark Park has a wooded area where many of the Riverview Park foundations are still visible and is currently used as a bicycle dirt jump and pump track park maintained by the Chicago Area Mountain Bikers. A sculpture entitled Riverview by local artist Jerry Peart stands in front of the police station.

    Seems like it's very short...

    • @mhtube01
      @mhtube01 10 лет назад +3

      It is short but that's due to limited space. I'm not sure how familiar you are with Knoebels but they used to have a steel coaster in this spot called the Whirlwind which they tore down in 2004. Believe it or not, the Whirlwind was probably 2/3 the length of Flying Turns! It was a smaller coaster with a curved drop, two corkscrews and two banked curves and that was it. lol. They built a flat ride called the Looper in part of the area where the Whirlwind stood which made space more limited for Flying Turns. It's a good ride though, definitely one of a kind. Just ride it more than once if the line isn't too long!

    • @SeekerLancer
      @SeekerLancer 6 лет назад

      Whirlwind was just a boring Vekoma Mk-1200 that they sold to a park in Costa Rica. Flying Turns is a much better fit for the park even if it's not the most exciting ride in the world. I don't think the Looper's location was an issue really, it's a carnival flat ride that's easy to relocate.

      It's open! I rode it and it's a lot of fun! Very different from anything else out there so you really can't compare it to anything. If you haven't gotten to Knoebels yet this year you should go and ride it. Go on a week day though so it isn't as crowded and you won't have to wait nearly as long. My suggestion is get there when the park opens and go straight to the line until they finish testing it. That way you'll have almost no wait.

      Timothy Toos bc they need to make it so they follow the rules and they need to make it safe, trust me it’s worth it lol

    Don't go skiing, snowboarding, surfing, in the ocean, skateboarding, or driving either.

    With all due respect, 8 years for this is just utterly absurd!

      Tommy Carr That is true, but as good and unique as this is, 8 years is still ridiculous!

    I Go To This Park But I Havent Went On This Ride Quite Yet. although From My House In Delawhere It Takes A Shorter Time To Get To Dutch Wonderland. Unfortunatly My Brother Wants To Go To Knoebles Instead of Dutch Wonderland. Also Dutch Wonderland Copied Most Rides At Knoebles Which Makes Me A Bit Anxious.
