This is an oldie, but this is my favorite video. This video got me started with my obsession with sewing. It was a simple project and I just kept making all thing placemats from your videos. I have now gotten a little more adventurous and made many more things, but it all started from this project. Thanks for all the inspiration Lorrie! #Cricutlove
This project was my first sewing project! I couldn't find Pioneer Woman placemats, so with ZERO sewing skills, I made my own using fabric, fusible fleece, and a sewing machine I bought a few days before. I quilted vertical lines and added a liner on the reverse side. I covered the edges with bias binding I purchased (I did try to make my own, but the end result was wonky). Then, I followed along with Lorrie to make my very homemade-looking makeup bag. Thank you, Lorrie, for the great tutorial. I'm excited to make more and improve my sewing skills!
Lorrie, I just love your videos! You explain everything so clearly and concisely. Easy to understand! I feel like I can do anything when i watch your videos!! Thank you for taking the time to share, inspire and teach us!!!
Brilliant!!!!!! Lori.....that is amazing......going to do that for sure.........talking about your bobbin, it might be the way you've put it in....or the way you filled your bobbin, maybe it bean filled too loose.....thank you Lori for you Brilliant idea....hope to get more.
Thank you for such a clear instructive video. As a beginner at sewing I really appreciate your easy style of teaching, and giving up-close views really help. Also loving your creativity. I feel like I can do this!
Just found your video and had to give it a try. It turned out great. Now I'm addicted. Going to go back to Walmart and buy a whole bunch more so I can start maki g them for Christmas gifts. Thanks for the wonderful idea.
Great tutorial. I've never thought of using placemats. I like how you stand while using your machines instead of sitting. I've noticed others have copied your idea! Thank you so much for this great idea!!
Made 2 of these pouches using your excellent tutorial. They came out great. I did add something extra, though -- a cardboard bottom to give the bag more shape. I split an extra placemat in half and used each half to create a snug sleeve for the cardboard to slip into. (You can decide which side to use to match or contrast the bag's lining.) Then pushed the covered cardboard down into the body of the bag. It looks so professional and adds body. Thanks for the great project. :-)
I saw your video early morning and made one after church. I used a drying cloth with flamingos on it from dollar tree. It was easy peasy. Came out so cute. Thanks for the video
Great idea to an already beautiful pouch! You ladies are awesome!! I've been trying to figure out how to put some structure to my makeup pouches and thought laminating a piece of cardboard then sewing fabric around it....don't know if that would work or not. Thanks again!
Great tutorial. I saw these placemat's and love the colors and didn't want to make a purse but I didn't think about these cute bags you made. I would have Never guessed that you were new to sewing! You did a wonderful job. I like real time videos with any kind of hiccups and all. Your dog in the background put a huge smile on my face. My dog sits with me also. Keep the tutorial coming. TFS
My sister Judy just told me about you, I don't sew but my sister does I'm going to Walmart to buy some place mats to make some. You tutorial is excellent! I just subscribed to your channel I'll be watching you. TFS I
I made the quilted 2 inch corner box pouch in the same fabric as yours. It’s adorable! It was easy and your instructions were clear...It took me an hour to figure out how to thread my machine (lol) so proof I am not a seamstress! Thank you! I do believe family and friends will be getting Sets of assorted sized and styles of bags for Xmas 2018.
This is a great easily understood video. Great job and thank you . I think I’ll use the embroidery feature on my sewing machine and add a name or initials on the bag….will aim for that!
I think I have some pillow shams that came with a quilt package that are quilted as well and slightly bigger than placemat size. But I’m sure would work as well .
Even though I have made these before, I keep these tutorials in my craft folders to view for the next time I make them. I don’t make them often so I need nudging to remind me. I’m making at least three this time. Very good tutorial, thank you for sharing. Have a wonderful day!
Please be prepped. For your demo.Use editing feature on camera. For a sower it was torture to see you so scattered i.e. Looking for ribbon for zipper. The good side is am going to make 16 for my bunko ladies.. Thanks for idea. Alex
At last I found placemats, there were any here in my area. I think everyone saw your tutorial! I am going to make some for my friend who’s son is going to get married and they have to travel, I will make a set with pouch for cosmetics and the boxy box for travel stuff. Thanks for this lovely tutorial!
I've been sewing for about 55 years! Yes! I'm old!!! LOL!! I have sewn hundreds of items but for some reason I could never get the hang of this type of zippered pouch! But I did now!!!!! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Love the dog too!!!😀. P. S. I usually have bobbin problems when I sew fast & stop suddenly to remove a pin or clip! Also I've had bobbin problems when the machine needle is dull! I was told by a very good sewing machine repairman in middle Tennessee, where I get my machines serviced, that the needle should be changed after every project because they dull easy & synthetic fabrics such as polyester dull needles very quickly! It may cost you a little extra in needles but it's so worth it! Also, from the sound of your machine, it may need to be serviced! Also bobbin problems usually signal that your upper tension is out of wack! That's one thing I can not remedy so I take my machine or machines to have them serviced!
When you get done sewing your seam, make sure your needle position is in the " up " position, and always turn your wheel thing towards you and you won't have the 3 threads to deal with that are giving you troubles !
You are a joy to watch. Pulling strings, talking to yourself, looking for stuff, ssking questions to people that you can't hear. Love it. Reminds me of myself when working on projects. Thanks for sharing. My surger had never worked right for me. The threads keep missing stitches for some reason. Not me. I've had others try to work it as well.
I just quilted a 14" x 20" piece of fabric and created this ditty bag in no time. Thanks for the detailed instructions. I plan on picking up some Pioneer Women placemats and make a few pouches like yours. VERY CUTE!!!
Thank you for taking the time to show us how to do it. I'm really don't sew but I think I can do it. And I love how your doggie is in the background sleeping and doesn't seem to care what noise your are making.
I love these! I do a lot of pouches, but never tried a placemat. We don't have Walmart in Scotland, but some cheaper home stores may have them, such pretty patterns! A little closer and focused on your throat plate would show the sewing even better, and I think your bobbin may be threaded incorrectly, that gives thread problems!! Thank you for the tutorial. Btw, I have a scissor button on my Janome, and it is amazing how much thread you save as it cuts 1/4 inch from the finish! :-)
I’ve made 20+ of these for gifts. They’re super simple and a perfect little gift. The straight edges on this particular Pioneer Woman placemat make it easy, however, I also wanted to use the scalloped ones and thought I’d share my tips. I unstitched the binding from the two short edges and clipped it off at each corner leaving the longer scalloped edges alone. I then used a straight edge to mark a straight line and cut off the scallops. Using the salvaged binding I removed earlier, I rebound the short edges, sewed the zipper and proceeded the same way. I ignored the scallops on the long edges and just used a bit larger seam allowance pretending it was straight which left the inside seams nicely bound. I’m having a hard time finding other affordable quilted rectangle placemats but have ordered some super cute Vera Bradley placemats that should turn out just like her designer bags. Thanks for a great video.
When I have “three” threads it is because I have stopped sewing in the middle of a bobbin rotation; when I bring the needle back to a fully raised position there are just two threads. Thank you for the tutorial.
I made this! Well sort of. I saw your other video for how to make a placemat so I made that then I turned the placemat into a boxy bag. I didn’t cut the ears off, though. They tucked right in. I plan to make a beer themed boxy bag for my husband who travels for work. I’ll probably tack the ears so they stay in place. He sees my little makes and thinks it’s magical sorcery 😂 Thanks for your tutorials and encouragement!!
Thank you for sharing this tutorial with us! It’s people like you who share their talents on RUclips that gift the rest of us with instruction, demonstration and inspiration! You Makers make more Makers!! Let’s keep those creative energies flowing!
Your thread problem may be that you have loaded the bobbin in the bobbin case on the machine backwards. Before loading the bobbin in the bobbin case hold the bobbin and thread up in front of you and see if you see the form of a b. Then load it. If you see a d then it is wrong. Remember b is better and d is wrong. Hope this makes sense. Loading the bobbin wrong will also cause the thread to catch under the throat plate and form what is called a bird nest and has to be dug out. This will also cause damage to your machine. SOoooooo loading the bobbin correctly is important. Hope I have helped.
Sonya Bond thanks. Thank you! It’s the right way (b) I’m not sure what was going on. It appears to be fine once I rethreaded it. I usually don’t use that machine but it’s closest to where I film. I’m sure it was user error. That machine has no speed control and it flies
Check you bobbin tension. If it's to loose it will "bounce" with each downward needle motion causing a birds nest mess under the cover (or wonky back thread if the bobbin tension is slightly to loose)
I absolutely love these. I’ve made a ton of them. I found that if you zigzag making the corners it wont fray. Usually i went back and did this but this time i did it first. THANK YOU
So, loved your video instructions. I added embroidery to my pouch, and vinyl iron-on lining. By the way, you wondered about the 3 threads when you stop: It means your take up lever is not in the highest position when you pull your work out. If you return your needle to the highest position, you will only have 2 threads :) Wish I could post a picture of my finished bag.
Squeeeee now I need to go to Wally World and stock up with some of those gorgeous fabrics. Whoever designed these home decorations was very wise and knew what they were doing. Love love love this video. Thanks for sharing. You would be welcome in my sewing room any time, just don’t look at my mess.
Thanks, Lorrie. You are an awesome teacher and demonstrating your projects in real time from start to finish is most helpful. You have inspired me to start sewing again!
I truly love your videos. You are great in explaining everything. I love that you are so ‘down to earth’. I search for your projects because I know it’s gonna be something easy and useful. Now that you have us hooked - keep them coming. I was at church yesterday showing off my earbud pouch and people were saying, ‘you made that’. Lol. I am about to order some lobster claw hooks and a bunch of zippers from Amazon today. Oh and I am going to Walmart and get some place mats. Question - what kind of zippers do you usually keep on hand.
I meant to ask where exactly do you place the pull before you sew it. It looks like the pull of the zipper pull is about an inch away from the placemat. Thanks.
Would you consider doing a tutorial for the scalloped edge placemat? I'd love to see what you come up with!! Made one of these today for a Valentine's gift and it was so fun!
Great quick idea for gift giving, place a home made loaf of bread in wrap and plastic sealed good, place in the deeper, bigger one and give as a beautiful gift with name embroidered on outside!!! People love personal gifts.. n

LOVE this!!!! Thank you so much for sharing this...........I also love your dog!!!! He/she looked so comfortable and obviously used to the noise of the sewing machine. What a cutie pie!!!!
Thanks so much for this tutorial. I've made several purses out of place mats but always used a fold over top and a button closure or velcro on the top. Couldn't figure out how to do a zipper. Now I know. So easy!
Just a note, you can cover a piece of plexiglass for the bottom of the bag. The bag will then sit perfectly. You do really neat crafting. Enjoy your site very much.
OMG I love these! I discovered your channel because of your Cricut tutorials and I just got one for Christmas, I didn't know I was going to get all this additional sewing fun stuff! And I don't really shop at Walmart so I didn't know there was this line of placemats at Walmart, they look fantastic for this sort of thing -- virtually no effort! And you've even given me an idea for re-designing my craft room to accommodate more sewing space!! -- because of you have yours set up!!
Thanks for you tutorial, Lorrie. You've inspired me to re-begin a placemat bag project I started a long time ago... I just needed the zipper know-how. Before I used handles, but the zipper is much more practical and finished looking! YAY!
Oh my goodness. This is genius. I have been wanting to make a zipper pouch, but felt overwhelmed. I will definitely be trying this! Just subscribed to your channel. You do great tutorials.
Thanks for making this video. I enjoyed it a lot. I have sewn since I was 10 but no longer. Ever once in awhile I will get the urge to sew something . This idea is perfect!
Thank you Lorrie!!! First time ever putting a zipper into something and it turned out good!!! Love this bag :). Appreciate your time making these videos.
have just made a zipper pouch bag thanks to you - if I knew how to add a picture I would let you see the finished bag but still learning this IT stuff. Many thanks Lorrie
Brilliant idea much more easier to make out of a placemats than from scratch life so short fav gifts be good as a tablet case xx thank-you so much for you sewing tips I’ll be trying to make this for my daughters xx
Hi Lorrie , I just made the pouch and I happy for the result. I was surprise that I found today 2 weeks ago and The same fabric . I have a question about how you finished the zipper part because I have. A regular sewing machine and the zipper part it is too bulky to sew .
turn the wheel toward yourself until the thread take up lever is near or at the top and that will eliminate the problem of an extra thread coming out of the bobbin area. Awesome tutorial - i am on my 4th bag!!
I’m very new to sewing and I really love your tutorials on this placemats series. Can you please do a tutorial on how to make a hanging tissue box holder for the backseat of a car using the quilt net placemats? Thank you ☺️
I love the pouches you’ve created, I can’t wait to see what you make with the gray/navy with tassels placemat! Thanks for sharing your time and talent with us!!!!!!
Very nice,my mom was a sewer and she use to make these for her make-up bags and use them for hand bags. She would use the the edging and for it into a strap and see it on. Really g Cute. She used whatever mats she could find at thrift stores☺such good memories☺love your video☺

I buy the cheap plastic cutting boards at $ Tree to make the bottoms of my bags solid. Cheap, easy to cut and do the job!

Place a rubber jar gripper under the sewing machine foot pedal to keep it stationary. No more "chasing " the foot pedal.
I’ve made so many of these! Wish the Pioneer Woman would come out with different quilted placemat fabrics.
Zipper needs at least a 14”. 18” would be better.
Loved your demo. Very clever using place mats to sew totes and pouches. Thank you for sharing your creative talent.
Please be prepped.

I just quilted a 14" x 20" piece of fabric and created this ditty bag in no time. Thanks for the detailed instructions. I plan on picking up some Pioneer Women placemats and make a few pouches like yours. VERY CUTE!!!
That dog is my spirit animal
Thank you for taking the time to show us how to do it. I'm really don't sew but I think I can do it. And I love how your doggie is in the background sleeping and doesn't seem to care what noise your are making.
I get a lot of my zippers from a Thift (second hand) store....they are new. Sometimes I get them for as low as 10 cents.
Noreen_Ann
Now that's really smart. What an excellent idea!!
Just went to the store to buy placemats can wait to do these. Thank you
I love the dog in the background trying to sleep. Lol
Hey. Just wanted to let you know my sister and I have made about 50 of these bags. And more to come. Lol. Everyone loves them. Thanks for sharing.
Any idea how much these would sell for ?
I love these! I do a lot of pouches, but never tried a placemat. We don't have Walmart in Scotland, but some cheaper home stores may have them, such pretty patterns! A little closer and focused on your throat plate would show the sewing even better, and I think your bobbin may be threaded incorrectly, that gives thread problems!! Thank you for the tutorial. Maybe home bargains might have them. If you find any let me know Elizabeth as I will also be looking for them too . 😁
Elizabeth Halley , exactly where I am going to look!! I will let you know. Asda is part of Walmart group, will try there too as its a great idea!

Elizabeth McKay what about dunelm i think that is what it is called

I used a Pioneer Woman quilted table runner and made a quilted tote that I have since given away but it was much quicker than me quilting myself.
When I have “three” threads it is because I have stopped sewing in the middle of a bobbin rotation; when I bring the needle back to a fully raised position there are just two threads. Thank you for the tutorial.
Lisa McMullen is correct make sure your needle is in the up most postion to prevent 3 threads.
I made this! Well sort of. I saw your other video for how to make a placemat so I made that then I turned the placemat into a boxy bag. I didn’t cut the ears off, though. They tucked right in. Your thread problem may be that you have loaded the bobbin in the bobbin case on the machine backwards. Check you bobbin tension. If it's to loose it will "bounce" with each downward needle motion causing a birds nest mess under the cover (or wonky back thread if the bobbin tension is slightly to loose)
Also when you start sewing hold down your loose threads...otherwise they get pulled down into the bobbin area and can make a birdnest.

Will you please do a video on the standard size one, not the quilted? Thanks in advance.
I already did :). ruclips.net/video/fHuULUFL5Vg/видео.html
Great video. Made two fabric baskets this morning. Came out cute. Also, love the puppy sleeping on the chair behind you. LOL
if you raise your sewing machine needle you would not get 3 threads coming out of the bobbin
Can u explain?
Thanks, Lorrie. You are an awesome teacher and demonstrating your projects in real time from start to finish is most helpful. You have inspired me to start sewing again!
When you iron those lines to make them go away, when they get cold, they will come back
That's why I don't use those darn pens ever - they are a good idea with a bad execution.
The ones that aren’t quilted would also make great pillows. Your dog is beautiful and so patient.
PS i'm so going to look at place matts forever in a new light forever.

I never get tired of making these. They're a big hit with my family. Just made my DIL another one for her makeup.
I meant to ask where exactly do you place the pull before you sew it. It looks like the pull of the zipper pull is about an inch away from the placemat. Thanks.
Put the pull near the center of the zipper. Then you can sew the zipper on without hitting hw pull.
Nice!
People love personal gifts.. n
I have made lots of these for gifts. My favorite project so far. I use fray check after I zigzag the raw edges for more security. Thanks!
Fantastic tutorial ,hope we can get them here in Tasmania

You could try Reject shop or Shiploads. They're both in Launceston.
Lorrie- great & quick project since that fabric is quilted & you save time not doing a liner! Thanks for sharing with us!
Standard please
Omg! Im overwhelmed. Placemats? Wow. So wanna make these..im still learning how to sew. So nice. Tfs!
Interesting tutorial, but I suggest being more organized and have all materials handy to avoid losing time.
Oh how rude
LOVE this!!!! Thank you so much for sharing this...........I also love your dog!!!! He/she looked so comfortable and obviously used to the noise of the sewing machine. What a cutie pie!!!!
Great ideas. I’m on board to make some things with placemats. The fabric they used to make the placemats is very beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Great video, thank you Lorrie. Love seeing your puppy napping in the room with you!
Lorrie, I love watching you. You are a very good teacher, you are so informative. The smaller bag would be a good size for men. ~Barbara
I have actually made one of each of the place mat projects you have demonstrated. I love them, and thank you.
There is a new one coming tomorrow !
You are too funny, new to sewing? No way. Love your style of teaching. Great video. Thanks
I love how well you teach us in your videos. You have a voice that is easy to listen to.
Thank you Lorrie these placemat pouches are my favorite. I would love to see a larger version with a zippered pocket in front.
Love the way you explain things.thank you
Thank you Lorrie!!!
This is a fantastic idea, you’ve inspired me , and sharing your video with sisters and my 88 year old mom, for she loves to sew..thank ! Thank you,❤️
Brilliant idea much more easier to make out of a placemats than from scratch life so short fav gifts be good as a tablet case xx thank-you so much for you sewing tips I’ll be trying to make this for my daughters xx
Thank you! I am going to sew these and make card stock corner templates on my Cricut.
I truly love all of the videos from placemats. These are so awesome. I wish there was fabric was available.
Great gift ideas and the price is right!
I am going to have to try this with placemats. Very neat idea and already quilted etc. Thanks for the great instructions.
I’m very new to sewing and I really love your tutorials on this placemats series. Can you please do a tutorial on how to make a hanging tissue box holder for the backseat of a car using the quilt net placemats? Thank you ☺️
Just made one of these placemat pouches tonight! Such a simple and fast project. I just love it! Ty for sharing Lorrie!
