Aww. I'm glad you think about me when you're in a Walmart parking lot at the side of a stroad. ♥
I have been to Las Vegas 16 times. A lot of those were trade shows, but I did a bunch of personal trips there, too. It has its moments, by overall, I hate it there.
As you experienced, after about 3 days in Vegas, you just get tired of it. Specifically, you get tired of literally everybody trying to take your money from you. If you only lost $200 then you did ok.
And once you leave the Strip or Downtown, the rest of the city gets pretty bad pretty fast. I just made a video about crossing the street that features a bunch of locations in Vegas.
As for water usage, a massive amount of Las Vegas' water is recycled. It's actually much more than you'd think. I think that's one thing they actually do well, for what it's worth.

Thank you for visiting our little desert city here in Vegas❤! I’m a teacher in this city and as someone who’s a local, here we don’t really interact much with The Strip unless you’re someone who works in the industry or actually enjoy that stuff regularly. It’s true what you say though that some parts of the city just feels “off” and could probably use better planning and urban renewal. That’s just our reality in this city. I just try to educate my students that we can either leave the city like many do or try to make a positive change in our community no matter how small. There’s a lot of good people and kids with tons of potential here and I’m proud the people in this city that technically shouldn’t be here.

Glad you liked Grand Canyon. I worked at the south rim for a summer way back in 78. The North Rim is higher in elevation, so it gets more snow in the winter. It's not as accessible as the South Rim. Most visitors are coming from Phoenix and Flagstaff from the south.

Vegas is so gross. We went as a family once while on a road trip (from Montreal to California) and we were out within 24 hours. It feels like everything is covered in glittery varnish but if you pay close enough attention you see the cracks and the despair within them. That being said, this video made me so nostalgic for that trip, thanks for sharing!! We had travelled with our dodge caravan but we were 2 adults and 3 kids. It was awesome!!

I can't speak for Las Vegas, but Phoenix, AZ is such a difficult place to live at if you don't own a car. The streets are massive, and there are only a few bike lanes in the downtown area and better off neighborhoods. Also, crosswalks are far and in between. It is no surprise that we have some of the highest, if not the highest percentage of pedestrian deaths and a accidents in the country.
Also, PLEASE LOCK YOUR DOORS ALWAYS FROM NOW ON. Be safe 😃

Las Vegas to me is a symbol of how powerful media can be to change human behavior.
For example; Las Vegas became popular during the 50’s with Frank Sinatra, then the 70’s with Elvis.
It was a big impact on society and everyone wanted to be part of it.
Obviously still popular because we have all that older generation who still see that symbol, but new generation are different.
Yes, we may go, but is mostly for curiosity.
I go to Las Vegas because it has a great rock climbing community 🧗🏻‍♀️ kinda avoid going to the casino area. Honestly it has weird vibe.
Fun fact. Originally CD Juarez Mexico 🇲🇽 and El Paso Tx where to be the “Las Vegas” but a priest from that location make it impossible so they had to find a new location that allowed them to do it.

    • @HarryLovesRuth

I don't know how much this has to do with Walmart. Municipalities can control land use within their borders, even on private land. Many have outlawed overnight camping in an (unsuccessful and ill advised) attempt to address homelessness.
I'm unfamiliar with the story of the deaths mentioned above. However, the liability situation is something that is fair. Will losing a lawsuit over unsafe overnight conditions in its parking lot bankrupt Walmart? Of course not. But unsafe overnight conditions are still unsafe, and legal liability is how US laws enforce the duty of care.

    • @anthonymiller8979
      @anthonymiller8979 2 года назад +1

@@HarryLovesRuth For sure. Many localities have rules on this which override the Walmart policy. The one lawsuit won't bankrupt Walmart but if won sets a precedent for other similar suits and may be the straw that breaks the camel's back. The overnight thing is great for those who need it, but maybe not so thrilling for communities nearby.

I think it's easy to call out the tourism industry in Las Vegas (technically unincorporated Paradise, NV) for resource use because it's an experience that I don't enjoy. The unfortunate reality is that the Colorado River crisis is much more complex than the presence of an artificial oasis of hotels and gambling. Population centers have done a remarkable job of reducing water consumption. Agriculture (the products of which all Americans benefit to some degree) has work to do, but would have to vastly reduce the scale of its output if it were to reduce its consumption of water.
When the Colorado River's output was being divvied up among the states, the volume of water was (perhaps deliberately) miscalculated by the people doing the divvying. They also screwed Tribal Nations out of their share of what did exist.
As I see it, the question isn't about whether Las Vegas should exist or should we be farming in the desert. The question is what do the people who live in these regions want to do about the crisis and do they have the political power to affect the changes they want to see? Any solution to any problem must come from those affected and my job is to work to improve the US political system so that their voices are heard.

There is an aquifer underground in Vegas, that’s the origin story of the place, Mormons traveling to California found a spring and put up a small settlement/stop for other travelers. I believe that is still there somewhere in the city of Las Vegas, but be aware, once you crossed south Sahara Avenue, that’s unincorporated “cities” run by Clark County (Paradise, Winchester). This is how the gambling industry grew up around the strip because it was out of city limits. Just this past August it was “monsoon season” with lots of flooding (another RUclipsr that does sports stuff) was stuck there in the mess). The main issue is: the Colorado river can no longer sustain the Hoover Dam/Lake Mead AND the Glen Canyon Dam/Lake Powell. There’s a huge fight to have the Glen Canyon Dam removed to save at least Lake Mead, and further down the river from there.

@@LeahandLevi there’s a book from 2013 by Nathaniel Rich called “Odds Against Tomorrow” that deals with extreme drought (in New York) and the problems it causes when a massive rain storm hits. Soil after a long period of no rain shrivels up and won’t absorb water, it’s almost like pavement, the water just pools on top, if there’s no outlet, or the storm drains get overwhelmed, you get flooding.

@@LeahandLevi Vox just released a video on water use in the Western US: 32% of the water goes to growing animal feed! No amount of residential switching to “desert landscaping” can fix that (residential use is 6%, commercial (including hotels with pools and fountains) is 8%). I’ve always said that we waste too much agricultural land to feed animals for a meat based diet, it seems we’re wasting water too.

There’s only one thing I want to see in Vegas and that’s OmegaMart. I used to want to see Penn & Teller but they came here a few years ago (here being the greater Chicagoland area) so I got to scratch that off my list. If I were to visit the Grand Canyon I’d probably try to avoid Las Vegas.

You guys are going to be disappointed after camping in the west as you go East.
In Moab at the hottest parts of the day when camping I go to a resort, in their basement they have 3 empty conference rooms that I use as an office, sometimes I sleep under the table too as it's quiet and dark and air conditioned in the midday heat.
It takes about an hour to check into a hotel in Vegas... you could gamble so much more if they would just hire more employees to check you in.
