J Lann, the show invited a vegan chef on to cook then they made up a battle where they asked a vegan to cook meat. It seems they either wanted her to quit dramatically or to attempt to cook meat and make a fool of herself. I think she took the right path and was true to her values. The show hosts value drama, and they got a little of that too (with the help of editing).
@Notorious J I agree. When they announced the switch, and wanted her to cook meat, I just felt repulsion and know how I would feel. So happy she stuck to her non-cruelty ethics!
A very honourable move for sure. I commend you for your dedication to veganism and not being willing to compromise your values for this TV show. Powerful statement!
In which way is that a powerful statement? "I'm not heating this piece of meat from an animal that is dead either way! Ha!" The only thing I'm getting from things like this pretend ethical behavior (since you are not saving any animal there, and you may be as vegan as you like, but you should really give this thought some consideration) is that modern veganism has long abandonned its animal-protection roots and instead functions as a platform to act out strong-mindedness and/or empathy. I'm very empathic, but I don't need to be vegan to prove that to myself or others. And I can say hand-on-heart that this is the reason why vegans that go public with their veganism disgust me.
james64ibm This comment section is a vegan community bro. I feel like they are forcing people to accept veganism. I respect that people choose to eat vegetables only. But the majority still eat meat and vegetables at the same time.
it's not so much that we're forcing people to accept being vegan, it's about helping people realize that by cutting out animal products for good we are not only saving many innocent beings in the long run, but we are also helping to save the earth. the number one contributor to all of the damage that is happening around the world (ocean dead zones, deforestation, world hunger, diseases, etc) is animal agriculture. that's just a fact. not to mention that switching to a plant-based diet is more than tremendously wonderful for the human body.
Why is it so hard to understand she doesn't want to cook meat? Veganism is about saving animals, but it's also about principle. Would you cook human meat if it was already dead?
Interesting that they get someone for being vegan, and then the first thing they require is that she cooks meat. That simply does not pass the smell test for me.
TheAtheistPaladin but there's no cooking contest in existence that asks people to only cook things that they are good at cooking, there's no challenge in that and it's not fun to watch. It's impossible for her to not have known she would be asked to cook meat at some point, especially in a country that has no word for vegan
" there's no challenge in that and it's not fun to watch." There are many ways to challenge someone without requiring that they drop their ethics. Time restraints, strange ingredients or miss matching flavors. etc. "It's impossible for her to not have known she would be asked to cook meat at some point, especially in a country that has no word for vegan" No, single word for vegan but they do say "strictly vegetarian. " Even so, why would a vegan join a show knowingly that would require them to cook meat? If anything, she had no reason to suspect that they would not respect her ethics, which is why she went on the show. Again, they choose her because she was vegan. It is dick move to choose someone because they are vegan, then only to require first thing that they cook meat.
She probably joined the show because she was gonna get paid or for more exposure, (same reason most people go on cooking shows). And since she was invited to the show she could have just asked them first if they would require her to cook meat before she went on.(but the answer's pretty obvious, since its a cooking show) And are you really saying that they should have different challenges just for her because she's vegan??(because then they would have to do the same thing for the vegetarians and pescatarians) And there was once a contestant on master chef that was vegan and still reached the finale without ever tasting her food, so if that contestant could survive that show, then this girl should be able to too or she should have declined the offer. Also since the judges arent vegan then it would be kinda weird and difficult for them to make challenging and interesting vegan contests. She knew this as well before leaving her house.
They cook dog in China, so if they got someone they knew no longer cooked dog, and made it a "challenge" to cook dog in the very first round... that would not be a dick move? Just because you call it a "challenge" does not mean it is okay to push on others. You do not have to force someone to deny their own ethics to participate in a contest. You pretend that accommodating veganism is somehow unreasonable and yet nothing seems to be a problem. I have already given you ways to have a challenge without requiring someone to deny their own ethics. Time restraints, strange ingredients or miss matching flavors. Again, they KNEW she was vegan, and the only thing they could think of is to make her cook meat as the first challenge? I am sorry, but that does not sound reasonable nor anything you said could change that.
You just repeated yourself without addressing any of my points, you address all my points in the first reply so i dont know why youre not doing that now, so to keep things simple please address my points like you did last time. And by the way she wasnt forced to do anything, they asked her to come on a non-vegan cooking show and she accepted, they didnt force her to cook or eat meat. And if i used to cook dog but stopped, and someone invites me to a dog cooking show or a show where they cook dogs, ill decline. Similarly as a vegan and if someone invites me to a show where contestants are constantly asked to cook different types of meat ill decline, im not going to ignore their rules and call them dicks for inviting me. "You pretend that accommodating veganism is somehow unreasonable and yet nothing seems to be a problem. I have already given you ways to have a challenge without requiring someone to deny their own ethics. Time restraints, strange ingredients or miss matching flavors" -First of all i dont know what you mean by "yet nothing seems to be a problem", but my point was that 1. there are already time restraints for every challenge on the show, 2. Most people in china dont even know what veganism is so its gonna be very difficult for any non- vegan to know what a weird vegan ingredient or which flavours match or not to do that they would need to hire an expert vegan chef to judge and that could cost thousands of dollars they really dont need to spend. And even if they did people would still bash them for giving the vegan special treatment if the task is easy for her or they would get bashed for giving her are harder challenge than everyone else if its too hard for her. My main question (and i really need you to answer this for me)is why didnt she ask if she was going to be asked to cook meat before she came on the show?? Personally i think something is fishy because she could have saved a lot of time and money by just asking that first.
Actions speaks louder then words, her actions showed integrity and conviction while their actions showed that they were willing to set someone up to test those convictions and when she did not conform to their views they kicked her out. A perfect microcosm of society as a whole I feel. Much respect to Daphne!!
He's from England, lol. Yeah @Footsoldier, I thought so. They obviously invited her only to have that little scene or a vegan chef cooking meat. People can be too stupid and childish!
I feel bad for her, as I’m sure that she was very happy to have the opportunity to be on the show. She made the right choice by standing up for what she believes in, though.
Yes! Hopefully it would turn into a chain. Although sadly, where my wife and I currently live is very backwards -- only one vegan restaurant, almost no electric cars (not even any emission tests), and it's very difficult to find a place to recycle. So if it became hugely popular, we might still have to drive quite a distance to eat there. I'd do it! lol
Very happy to see this video. I saw an Chinese vegan blog talk about this and was so angry and confused about these producer/show judges' ethics. I'm glad that a vegan chef is at least on the show to present our moral baseline and integrity. The world will change one day
‘I respect that’, well not really and neither does the show. The show clearly was like a dictator ‘if you won’t be forced against your beliefs, we’ll kick you out’. This show demonstrated a very ill-informed & closed minded aspect of it.
They did the same thing on master chef. They made a vegetarian cook with meat. Well I guess they didn’t make her, she chose to. Anyway it’s funny how people aren’t forced to make vegan dishes to prove they’re “well rounded” chefs
Well in this show they were about to lol. They were supposed to switch roles i.e. the meat expert was supposed to cook vegan/vegetarian dishes while the vegan was supposed to cook meat dishes. So your last statement was kinda off a little.
Right but she was vegetarian due to tradition, but Daphne is a vegan out of principle. Imagine being a dog lover and going on a Chinese cooking show & being expected to cook dog, that's not ok.
*That show lacked class for doing that to her; they should have had the integrity to honor a peaceful lifestyle that would benefit the health of many, especially since 115 million people watch it. Not the first time that a show does stuff like that to its contestants; shows in the West do that, too and the same can be said about them. She’s really awesome for the way she talked about it and handled it, though. Commendable*
It sounds like she didn't even get to cook anything at all! I wish she had the chance to say on camera, "Was this your intent from the beginning to have me cook meat? I haven't cooked anything for the show, and you ask this of me?" So infuriating.
Every situation that happens to you and everyone you meet has a Karmic significance. . Whatever your belief, Karma implies that you have created and continue to create your life. The trick is to stop creating karmic residue that you will have to live through while trying to clean it up.
Unfortunately,, many feel as you do about Karma, the world today reflects that greatly.. However, this is a misconception. Karma is always instantaneous.. In fact, it is so instantaneous most are unaware they are constantly creating residual they will have to continue to live through... even into the next life. If a person behaves in a way that sets up positive Karma in this life, that is what they will experience in the next. Just as it is with negative karma. Each individual is creating their world within a collective.
It's called "professionalism". Some lawyers defend their client even when they know who really their client is and some doctors even treat even the worst trash of society. Chef? - "The customer is always right."
This was definatly the intent 100%. And well done for standing up for what you believe in. Animal care in China is so poor last time I went there on a business trip in 2009. I became painfully aware of the misery many of their animals live through. Just walking through a regular street-market can make you sick to your stomach seeing the barely-living animals crammed into tiny cages, bloody limbs hanging out while they make inhumane screeches for help and mercy. The animal-torture aside, it’s a nice country with tons history and rich culture. But lack of compassion for their animals is beyond primitive and disgusting.
This kind of hit a nerve with me. It's the equivalent of inviting a devout Muslim then insisting they cook Pork. The producers set her up and that is really unfortunate. I kind of ran into this last Christmas, I show up at Christmas dinner where they know I'm vegetarian and they serve me spaghetti with meat sauce/balls. We had already offered to bring something but they insisted we didn't then served me that junk. I found it incredibly disrespectful. Glad you stood up for yourself and all of us who choose to not eat meat.
simmiah my thoughts exactly. Sorry about the Christmas dinner thing. One of my family members kinda did the same thing to me, but I brought plenty of food anyway, just in case, and sure enough they didn't make anything vegan like they said they would. I hope you left quickly or at least told them how it made you feel.
For those viewers of that show who are awake enough to get it, it's a great demonstration of how asleep the general population still is. What they did is similar to asking a chef who specializes in cooking pigs to cook kosher while the Jewish Rabbi (or Muslim) cooks a dish featuring bacon and pork. Shameful.
What a set up if I ever saw one...those types of shows live for drama...good for you for staying vegan strong girl...trust me this has backfired for them and is good for vegans everywhere! ♡
I'm Chinese and vegan. I was really happy to see daphne on the show and hoped she could raise more awareness of veganism in China. Unfortunately she wasn't given much chance to demonstrate how delicious vegan food can be. It's really a shame. There are huge amount of vegetarians in China because of religious reasons. But vegans are rare partly because of lack of access to vegan related information. I do hope in the future people like Daphne could launch their own cooking show on Chinese media and spread the vegan message.
It's like going into a restaurant and ordering steak and the waiter saying 'Sorry but our Chef on shift today is a Vegan, so we can't' I think she's twisting this for her benefit.
I'm a meat eater and even I'm pissed off with that Chinese show, feel sorry for her, waste of time, they seemed like they wanted to embarrass her from the start, I respect her for sticking to what she believes in.
Whatever ratings and publicity they got from setting her up to kick her off pale in comparison to the ratings and publicity they would have gotten from showcasing her various vegan dishes throughout the show. People would tune in to see the Goddess and the meal she prepared each week, nobody is tuning in to see an anti-climactic moment where they set her up to fail. The show wasted their own money and time to put her on for 2 seconds, all for no reward. In fact, many fans of the show are probably irritated that the show set this whole thing up. Daphne, on the other hand, had her time wasted, but now she is getting lots of good publicity. Silver lining!
Aside from the obvious-one of the most unfortunate things it's like she said the way shows cut things. And the people who side with the shows opinion, because that's what they're hearing, are never going to see this video and hear what the chef has to say about her experience and how she was asked to be on the show. It's funny not too long ago my husband and I were watching another cooking show, and they showed one of the contestants saying to another contestant I hope you drop your dish. But we had also just viewed a complete uncut video of a political nature and saw that the way the news to cut it made it seem totally the opposite-so at first we judge this contestant for saying that to another contestant, I turned my husband and I said you know what he may have said something to her that was cut out so I'm not going to judge her for saying that because we don't know the true context. Wishing her all the best in her career!
This is such a set up. They knew she was vegan. No one would make a challenge asking chefs to switch cooking vegan and meat dishes without knowing they are asking someone to go against their ethical beliefs on TV. Would they invite chefs on and tell them they have to cook dog, knowing they are a dog lover? Absolutely ridiculous.
I'm all for the "to each their own" mantra; but it's absolutely abominable for ppl who are not vegan to try to get a rise out of vegans--haha let's invite a vegan out & make them cook meat, let's post about loving bacon on a pig save video, etc.. Carnists indeed!
Wow, what a crazy narrative. They just ousted someone for their lifestyle, and made it acceptable (by using a guise of competition rules) with millions watching. This will prompt more ridicule for vegans living in that area. Especially if they view vegans as 'loosers'. Totally set up...probably by the meat sponsers. To us, who already have vegan ethics, she's a hero, for not caving in. They would have used that against her too... total gas lighting either way.
It would have been SO damn easy to challenge her to make a meat dish that was comparable to him but with Vegan ingredients. Beat a master meat chef without actual meat. More creative and makes WAY more sense.
If she had done it they would have used her to say , see even the vegan will cook meat for money. Or say how fake people are. I'm not vegan but I'm glad she refused and it was very disrespectful of them to ask her to do That after inviting her because she is vegan
not gonna lie, some Chinese people do that, which they say they respect you, but they force you to do the stuff you don't wanna do. Same thing happend to me when I worked for a Chinese company. Everytime we go eat, they would 'kindly' suggest me to eat meat even tho they know i'm vegan. They say it's respect of other people, and I can't be the only special one that require special food, and they think it's a hassle to order something just for me. After working there for few month, I quit the job, and I don't regret at all of that decision, and will never give in to pressure and indirectly kill animals! I understand people have different beliefs, but there's no excuse to force anybody to do things that's against their will and belief!
I'm a vegetarian myself and this is exactly what I feel when I have to give up my dream because of some eating preferences. But I like how elegant this young woman stands up for her principle.
I'm not a vegan but I'm really proud of her for standing up for her veganism and not ditching it for a tv show. It's really brave considering how many people watch the show.
I hate how people think that veganism is just this "oh you can just switch. It's not like you're going to eat it". It's not about that. It's not about the meat itself uhg. She's so right! So mature. Much love!!!
wow...there's no word for "VEGAN" in the Chinese language. It's as if the concept itself doesn't exist in their awareness. good for her for standing up!
She needs to sue the program makers for discrimination. Just like you cannot discriminate against a Muslim if he refuses to cook pork. It's the same thing - sue them! Lets start a campaign for the money for a lawyer???
She can't sue as she 'applied' (not invited) to the show and read and agreed to a certain set of rules. Veganism isn't a religion like Islam, the comparison is not even on the same page - albeit not even the same book. I don't disapprove of Vegans, but special treatment in a profession like this, would be like opening a Pandora's Box.
I am a vegan / vegetarian chef in China for the past 10 years and conduct my own cooking workshops around China. If it was me I would have asked the producers first what the rules are and based on that I would have walked out before the show. I am glad I am not part of that scene but I hope one day I can have my Chinese version of MasterChef with only vegetarians and vegans on the show. Good on you Daphne
I speak fluent Chinese and I'm vegan, and live in China, although I'm white and British. The thing I've found is that most Chinese people don't understand ethical vegetarianism or veganism, only spiritual or religious vegetarianism or veganism usually for Buddhism. But she also failed the cookie cutter conformity. You have to understand that in China anyone that thinks something that's slightly different to the accepted norms must hide their beliefs or be slapped down and humiliated. China thinks it's modern and being modern means high technology but also importing 'American' ideas such as frivolous car driving, beef eating and even non-denominational Christianity. Stubbornly determined to make the same mistakes as the USA in a kind of 'if you can't economically/militarily beat them join them' sentiment. Personally I'm much keener on Confucian, Daoist and Buddhist traditional thought.
Daphne is so elegant and beautiful!
Well done for staying true to herself and not giving in.
Dancing Dove you're so elegant and beautiful
Dancing Dove do you feel the same way about the shows decision. For staying true to their shows standards and rules.
True to herself and true to the animals!

Next up: Anti-food-Waste activist invited to show and challenged to cook a meal and subsequently throw it away in front of starving villagers.
After that: A dancer on Dancing With The Stars is challenged to dance the jive with a quadriplegic. When she says that's impossible, she's kicked off.
LMAO I M CHOKING XD
This comment thread is gold
sounds like they took her in the show just for this kind of plot.
Actions speaks louder then words, her actions showed integrity and conviction while their actions showed that they were willing to set someone up to test those convictions and when she did not conform to their views they kicked her out. A perfect microcosm of society as a whole I feel.
Much respect to Daphne!!
Wonderful girl! Shame on the show’s producers and judges!
Yeah this was a pretty wack show then
He's from England, lol.
Yeah @Footsoldier, I thought so. They obviously invited her only to have that little scene or a vegan chef cooking meat. People can be too stupid and childish!
Footsoldier did you see the full show? Do you know why she had a live cat in her bag as she left the competition? :O
+Jessica J What are you talking about?
I feel bad for her, as I’m sure that she was very happy to have the opportunity to be on the show. She made the right choice by standing up for what she believes in, though.
No 😃 this is GREAT m this was WHY she was meant to be on there , to show just how genuine this ethical choice is . It’s not a GAME lol
Daphne, you should open a restaurant immediately. We would all be there.
yeah
Yes! Hopefully it would turn into a chain. Where are you from Ben Faust?
I support you..
Nah, I wouldn't eat vegan garbage. It's unhealthy.
Wow what a shame I would LOVE more vegan chefs on cooking competitions where they can go head to head to show you can cook other ways.
What a hero! So much love for her xx
Very happy to see this video. I saw an Chinese vegan blog talk about this and was so angry and confused about these producer/show judges' ethics. I'm glad that a vegan chef is at least on the show to present our moral baseline and integrity. The world will change one day
Glad to hear she has some support there. Hopefully just the little clip helps boost awareness
What a shocking display of arrogance. She handled the despicable situation with such grace though.
Good for her!
She stood w/her values.
Respect?
Total honour
Thank you for standing up for your beliefs and for all vegans!
Vegans stand their ground💪✊🥑🍍🍌🍉
‘I respect that’, well not really and neither does the show. The show clearly was like a dictator ‘if you won’t be forced against your beliefs, we’ll kick you out’.
This show demonstrated a very ill-informed & closed minded aspect of it.
I hope someday there will be a purely vegan cooking show on TV.
I'd watch it! And I don't watch cooking shows... lol
Vegan bulging eating contest. Sign me in😁
Graceful Woman Warrior ❤️ Too strong for mainstream
They did the same thing on master chef. They made a vegetarian cook with meat. Well I guess they didn’t make her, she chose to. Anyway it’s funny how people aren’t forced to make vegan dishes to prove they’re “well rounded” chefs

Right but she was vegetarian due to tradition, but Daphne is a vegan out of principle. Imagine being a dog lover and going on a Chinese cooking show & being expected to cook dog, that's not ok.
Good for Daphne standing up for what she knows is right!
Wow! I can't believe they would do that to her. That was a set up. In a way it was probably for the best. She's an amazing woman!
RESPECT
So happy to have her on our side!
Absolutely love her! Respect, respect, respect, ..., respect!
You earned my respect lady. Screw that show..
She should ask for vegan meat. If They would refused ,it would be their fault that they didn't prepare for the show
Clever! Bring in a block of Impossible Inc. meat ! I'll drool all over it 😜😍
@Plant Based News team: wishing you a lovely festive season and an ever better 2018 :) And kudos to Daphne for being a true ethical vegan!
thank you!!
Thank you for standing up for your beliefs!

Brave, courageous gal! Firm in her beliefs. Strong woman! Bravo! ❤🙆🌱
She stands up for principles. Good for her. No amount of money is worth selling your soul.
It sounds like she didn't even get to cook anything at all! I wish she had the chance to say on camera, "Was this your intent from the beginning to have me cook meat? I haven't cooked anything for the show, and you ask this of me?" So infuriating.
She should make a RUclips channel! I really want to learn some of her recipes and support her in raising awareness of veganism.
Thank you, Daphne. We need to see more positive representations of non-white women advocating veganism.
Cheng-Yen Dharma Master do advocate to veganism😊
What does race has to do with veganism? Veganism is about animals
Lol do we?
Vegan SuperHero...
Mock meat was always an option, they didn't have to insist on actual meat for her to compete.
im sure they dont even have that in china although if they were thoughtful enough they couldve imported some
So now... you ARE officially the VEGAN GODDESS! What they did will backfire, trust me on that!
Alveda Allen Yassssss!!!!!!! karma will get them one dayy!!!!!
Karma is supposed to effect people in their next life, so what they do now doesn't really matter as far as repercussions this life goes.

+ScarletFBL Not really. Karma doesn't have to mean next life only comes. Sometimes it's too soon before you be able to blink your eyes!
She’s right, the judges shouldn’t have asked her to cook meat and compromise her values.
I wouldve walked away too.
It's not every day you see someone choosing to do the right thing. She earned my respect.
As if someone would push their moral values aside, just for a tv show. WTF!?
People frequently do. I applaud her for not being one of them!
It's called "professionalism". Some lawyers defend their client even when they know who really their client is and some doctors even treat even the worst trash of society. Chef? - "The customer is always right."
We just need pure vegan cooking shows and competitions!!!
Thank You Daphne!
Except being a Vegan isn't a religion...
Shameful.
That was totally a totally setup!!! Why they invited her anyway?
I think her integrity was a more courageous act than winning a competition but I can see this being a painful experience for her.
Weili Ding spreading words of a foodcult is not doing any good. Should be forbidden completely.
So much respect for her
There should be an all Vegan Show...
They told her to cook it,not to eat it...the animal was already dead and that was a COOKING show, why is she such a hero?
It's like going into a restaurant and ordering steak and the waiter saying 'Sorry but our Chef on shift today is a Vegan, so we can't' I think she's twisting this for her benefit.
I applaud her for not giving up her views on life for television or money. :)
Thats crazy!! Im not vegan but thats crazy!!
Would they have insisted a Muslim cook pork?
LOL they will start a saint war
LOL they will start a holy war
This is so empowering , I deeply respect and admire what you did.
She is soo cool
Way to go... Daphne Chang is the chef of the future. So awsome! You didn't lose Daphne, that cooking show most certainly did!
She didnt win the competition but she is a life winner. A HUMAN with big letters. Respect.
So sad and so brave.
If she had done it they would have used her to say , see even the vegan will cook meat for money. Or say how fake people are. I'm not vegan but I'm glad she refused and it was very disrespectful of them to ask her to do That after inviting her because she is vegan
You are a hero. Thank you for standing for your principles. How sad that they are so callously ignorant.
not gonna lie, some Chinese people do that, which they say they respect you, but they force you to do the stuff you don't wanna do.
That's shameful
Big RESPECT Lady!!! :)
I'm not a vegan but I'm really proud of her for standing up for her veganism and not ditching it for a tv show. It's really brave considering how many people watch the show.
She's impressive
What a cool lady! Such heart and fortitude. Thank you for retaining your integrity during a challenging time. Entirely inspirational person!
Great example of integrity. I acknowledge you for having strong principles and abiding by them. 👍🏽
Mad respect to this girl for standing up for her values despite the strong pressure!
She gets Nothing but RESPECT from me as a Fellow Proud VEGAN!!! Bless you!! 🥑🍎🍈🍉🍊🍋🍌🍍🍎🍏🍐🍑🍒🍓🍅🥝
Good for Daphne for standing your ground.
I respect Daphne's decision. Thank you. You handle the situation so well & gracefully. ❤
I really admire her courage and her dedication. She’s an inspiration.
I hate how people think that veganism is just this "oh you can just switch. It's not like you're going to eat it". It's not about that. It's not about the meat itself uhg. She's so right! So mature. Much love!!!
Wow. What a strong human. I have no words but to say thank you.
Great respect to Daphany for withdrawing ,
👍🏼🌱👊🏼 Respect Daphne!
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 Amituofo!!! 🙏🏼💓
wow...there's no word for "VEGAN" in the Chinese language. It's as if the concept itself doesn't exist in their awareness. good for her for standing up!
Wow Daphne you're a woman of strong character and will! Love you from the bottom of my heart! Wish I could find a woman like you! 😊💕💓😘✌👌👍😇
Personally I'm much keener on Confucian, Daoist and Buddhist traditional thought.
collectivist cultures are like that, very oppressive in thought
but the reason behind the religious take is still ethical reason though i.e. to not cause suffering to the animals.
Hey but a vegan chef won Masterchef🤷🏼♂️
zbLoodlust087 actually she was vegetarian. It’s not the same thing.
He. His name was Dino
I'd like to see more vegan/vegetarian chefs in mainstream.
Good on her for not compromising her ethics no matter what, a true vegan.
Well done sweetheart! You give new meaning and pluralise the expression to become Beauty and the Beasts. Excellent work.
She is queen/goddess.
Why not a meat sub? They didn't say what type of meat.
