Hi Anika, Very happy so find a woman doing woodworking! I subscribed right away. I see you have mouthbreathers commenting. I'm here for good content and good vibes.
Best video I’ve found for true beginners. I literally went through 10+ videos before finding this one, wasting maybe 2 hrs of my life over the course of 2 days just to find a TRULY beginner video. The other ones assumed I knew the basics already, then why did they call them miter saw for beginners video!? Thank you!!
Finally. A clear concise, informative instructional video on the use of a Miter Saw. I only had to watch it once and completed my project without a hitch. Thank you Anika. Some of these folks making videos need to realize that just because you can operate a specific tool, doesn’t mean you’re the best person to teach how it’s used. I had to subscribe.
Wonderful explanation of the kerf! Finally, someone who knows how to explain clearly and concisely without bothersome music or quick cuts. Thank you so much.
Thank you for your clear, to the point explanation. I’m a 54-yr old woman from The Netherlands and love to create AND restore things myself. As a young girl my Dad took the time, again and again, to teach me how to DIY things myself. One of the main reasons for learning it myself, is that it gave me so much more independence in my adult life. Another is the amount of money I save is also huge, since I don’t have to call some handyman each time something needs fixing! In turn, I have shared with my daughter, who is 25 yrs old now, all MY knowledge about things in life, including what I know about DIY. In my view, that’s just a normal part of the upbringing of kids, so every parent should do this.
I was looking for a video on how to measure a board while making a miter cut. Kerf, wow I never would have thought of that. Your video explained what I was looking for immediately! Thank you so much!
Incredibly clear! Thanks! I just bought a miter saw, read the manual, and wanted to see some safety tips. Your explanation of things is really well-organized, and you summed up all the elements that I slowly pieced together from many different sources -- yet, you did it all at once. Also, awesome to see a woman doing woodworking and breaking the stereotypes! As a male, I first started with sewing and am now interested in woodworking. As Nick Offerman once said, "I feel like everybody, across the spectrum of sexuality, should be able to use a screwdriver or know how to change a tire. You know, things break. Those of us know how to fix things when they break just end up being better, more responsible members of our community.”
Good job explaining the kerf, easily understood. Went to another DIY video of a familiar gentleman and after 10 seconds came back to you. Thank you for explaining like your audience are newbies who asked a question instead of people who are already in the trades. I'm going to watch again; repetition is the mother of learning.
Wow, I just bought my first miter saw a few weeks ago and picked up a miter stand on Prime Day. I've used neither, but have visions of crown molding, as the crown molding in my home is done so very poorly. I knew that the kerf is the thickness of the blade, but I hadn't really thought of the impact on measurement. I am a fiend about measuring, so now I know why my cuts are a bit off. I also hadn't known that I should cut the ends off the lumber I buy. Again, a great tip that is probably something that everyone knows except us beginners. Thanks!
Thank you for mentioning the KERF. I've watched so many videos on what they do using the miter saw and no-one has ever mentioned the KERF or even which side of the line to cut. Excellent information. Don't stop with the small details. They mean a lot. New sub here.
I don't know what took me so long to find you. Every question I had was answered and I thank you for the encouragement and knowledge. My confidence level is soaring!
Just bought my first miter saw to level up my DIY projects and this video helped A LOT. Thank you for taking the time to explain the kerf, too. Appreciate it!
Great video, thanks for making a clean video with quality audio and a good camera . Not a lot of instructional videos this well produced in the DIY space
I just found your channel and I'm so happy! My husband is not handy, and now that I work from home, I'm excited to do some projects on my own. I love your explanations, and feel so comfortable seeing a woman do these projects herself. Thank you for your content.
Finally someone who is able to make woodworking understandable and who explains ‘basic’ concepts(concepts like kerf, use of tools,…). I finished my first year of woodworking and….stopped. Not because I don’t like wood(working) anymore, but because - as the months went by - I felt not talented, having difficulties with a lot(in fact almost everything). So I lost the fun, got discouraged…Now with these videos I feel enthusiastic again. Thank you so much Anita to give me self confidence in woodworking again.
What's going on? I've just subscribed to a channel of a lady less than half my age showing me how to do stuff I was messing up before she was born!! This is good stuff. It's clear, concise, with no jokey and distracting BS and more genuinely useful info shown in 7 minutes than is usual from such videos. Great!!
Thank you! So grateful to see a woman working with power tools. Have requested a miter saw for Christmas and look forward to learning more from you in the coming weeks.
I realize this video is more than two years old now, but I just got my first mitre saw (can't wait to use it!) and truly appreciate your detailed video on this tool. Thank you so much for sharing. I'm a Subscriber now :-)
That Kerf explanation was perfect. I was having trouble with getting correct cuts and now I understand how to fine tune the cutting. Thanks a bunch. looking forward to more of your videos :)
Thank you for your video! I found it very helpful. My boards have always been a little short, but I couldn't figure out why, until you explained the kerf and also shared your tip on cutting the ends of the boards.
Just made my very first cut with my mitre saw. I made sure this vid right before I started to get a good refresher on the basics. Thanks for sharing your content!
Thank you so much for your explanations. I purchased a miter saw almost 2 years ago and have finally opened the box due to loss of energy & being nervous about actually using this. I laughed when you said this was your first power tool purchase, mine was a sander. I feel way more confident now. Thank you again.
I was almost giving up on finding the right information about how to use a miter saw, but then I came across your video. Thanks for bringing out the basics in such a basic way👍🏾
Very helpful!! I'm a lone Lerner so I rely on videos like yours. I am engaged on a huge project, it is a house that I bought. I did torn the whole inside down with zero knowledge of how to fix a thing, so far it's been two years and I got electricity done, gas line done, insulation done, 70,% drywall done and this days I'm working the bathroom and kitchen cabinetry. It's amazing what I've done. Thanks for your video
I was looking for a video on miter saw safety and landed on your video first. After watching it, I feel like I don't need to watch anything else because you explained everything so succinctly. Especially the concept of KERF which, shockingly, isn't even mentioned in the user manual of the Kobalt miter saw I just bought. Kudos and thanks!
Very true. My grandpa lost part of his thumb on the table saw. Never use power tool if you are tired or under influence of beer or alcohol. I sometime like to drink beer doing wood working but aware on how much I consume. I need to get dust mask, not covid mask.
I just purchased my first miter saw. I’m so excited to use it and I’m so nervous to use it. Your video has helped me feel more comfortable. My first task is cutting quarter round for my baseboards. Do you have any tips for this particular project?
Thank you so much for this! I've wanted to get into woodwork for years and your videos are giving me the confidence! Quick question, when the saw hits the wood and begins cutting, does the wood move forward very much? I have RSI in my wrists so can't always apply a lot of pressure, so was concerned about it moving. I should just ask my astro physicist other half but tbh this will be a lot quicker 😂
You could also clamp the wood to the mitre saw table if you want to have help holding it down but it really doesn't pull or move and Anika is correct you don't need very much pressure xoxoxo
Could you do a video on how to measure? Nobody has one. I’m starting with zero experience and have yet to buy any power tools because the absolute basics aren’t available. :(
It's been four years since this and your other videos made me want a mitre saw. Four days ago, I finally got my very own one. Thank you for your inspiration. I've been asked so so many times if that is "really a birthday present a woman would want" or if my boyfriend gifted it to me, just to use it himself. I'm so glad, you teach girls and women, that power tools are not "men only".
You can’t imagine how much this comment means to me! Fun fact - the first power tool I got was a miter saw and I convinced my husband to get it for me for my birthday in 2012. We had a very similar conversation with the cashier at checkout. Let’s change the world one miter saw at a time 💪🏼
I've used other (10" saws) previously and was pretty surprised with the speed and cutting ability of this Dewalt saw.I have bolted mine to a table to minimize movement which I highly recommend. This is a Great saw ruclips.net/user/postUgkxPeGkHOMe05FySypTOvYumxMn-xi39oRe with a light to see your cutting line (not a laser line).I'd recommend this saw fro anyone looking to upgrade from a 10" miter saw.
Hi Anika, Thank you for the clear and concise explanation of kerf. I did not understand kerf until I watched this video. I also especially enjoyed the video teaching how to use the kreg jig for making pocket holes. Game changer!
Thank you for this!! I’ve used all sorts of saws and power tools but for some reason a miter saw makes me a little uneasy, thank you for this video and helping me understand how it works more! 😄
Thank you. A very helpful video. I hate when people try to teach how to do something, they make assumptions on what you know. You explained things very well without making any assumptions. I am going to attempt to put down some baseboards and this is very helpful.
I'm getting ready to use a miter saw for the first time to build out the enterior of a Sprinter van, so thank you for all your safety tips, it's a little intimidating to get started!
We were afraid to use this saw, until we watched this video. But, loved how easy and unstressful you made it seem. Now I did all my baseboard and saved a ton of money on hiring a contractor! THANK YOU!
I have just bought a mitre saw to make a storage unit and don’t know anything about them. This was a useful video to start with. I have subscribed and will be watching more. Thank you.
Thank you for explaining how to use a miter saw. I want my daughter to start working with me building her own things and it would be easy for me to explain it to her but to have another woman working with power tools helps to build her to build confidence. Thanks again
Thank you so much I’ve never used a miter saw I am getting ready to take an online woodworking class and no absolutely nothing so this video was fantastic and exactly what I needed. I am very excited about looking at the rest of your content. Thank you so much again
I rarely comment on videos, but I have to say, this was one of the most pleasant to watch instruction videos I have seen on power tools. You spoke so clearly, the lighting was great, you were helpful and enigmatic, and touched on very important aspects that a lot of other videos tend to gloss over (mainly the kerf, I've never heard anyone actually mention that). I have plenty of experience using other power tools, but I wanted to research and see if there's anything different about a miter saw that I may not have considered. I just bought the 10" Ryobi compound miter saw with double bevel and laser line, and am about to use it for cutting trim pieces for a screened in porch that I just built. I honestly wish I had purchased this before I built the main structure! Cutting lumber with a circular saw takes so much more time than it would have with this, lol. Anyways, thanks so much for such a helpful beginner video! I am definitely subscribing to see more from you.
I've been getting into very light woodworking lately, I've used a mitre saw before but wanted to make sure there's nothing I'm missing so I found this video. I look for videos like this all the time, and over and over and over, the ones that help me the most end up being videos by women. Just wanted to shout out how cool women in woodworking are, and say thanks for being so smart and cool;
I just found your videos and am enjoying them, also thank you for explaining everything in plain and simple English, I'm ashamed to say I'm in my 50's now and trying to learn about woodworking as my father always remodeled for us and now he's no longer here I need to learn because growing up I wasn't interested in hanging around the house to learn anything.
Surprised by very thorough information provided by Anika. You explained in 'layman terms' various jargon terms associated with the miter saw, thanks a lot ...
I have the Ryobi 10" sliding compound mitre saw (and other new power tools). I'm new to woodworking, and have been binge watching as many YT videos on the subject as possible. Thanks so much for your instruction.
Brilliant Anika, I teach students and know just how hard it is to get it right and you do , along with an Infectious enthusiasm. Am off to buy my saw and get a job done that my wife has wanted me to do but I have been reluctant no knowing how to use this saw. Thanks a million
Just got my first miter saw for Christmas and was lucky enough that your video was the first one I found. Fantastic video for a true beginner! I subscribed immediately so I can find the rest of your videos. Thanks, Anika!
Thanks Anika well explained - only have a table saw and have just acquired a Ryobi second hand mitre saw in excellent condition - looking forward to practice
That is a good teaching and a practical one foe that matter. Before now, I was always fidgety about handling Mitre saw. I can always reach out to you whenever the need arises. Thank you.
Thank you SO much for this detailed explanation. No fuss, very clear, and very approachable explanations. I really appreciate you taking the time to help the rest of us feel more comfortable with intimidating power tools!
I have watched a few videos on how to this use this miter saw, all made by men, and not one of them gave the details you have. For instance a kerf. I’m new to using one of these so it’s not something I would automatically know. Best video I have seen on this. Thank you.
This is very informative. I have ordered my first miter saw and I have never used one before and thought it would be a good saw to have for basic board cutting etc. This video really helped me understand the basics I will need to know. Thank you.
Your explanation of the KERF was wonderful, at first I wasn't clear about it but when you talked about needing 2 five-inch pieces and that we would have to buy a 10-1/8" piece of lumber (at least), then I completely understood not only as it related to the blade, but also as it related to buying lumber for the project I want to build--adding 1/8" to every single cut I'd have to make. That is, if I needed 3 five-inch pieces, I'd need to buy at least 10-1/4", etc. At least I hope that's correct! Thank you so much!
What a great instructional video! I never really knew how this saw worked until I watched your video....I've always used my little circular saw (with marginal success) for around the house stuff.....now I'm excited to buy one of these.....thanx again!
Thanks for the basics a mitre saw is my next power to I want to buy and you have explained it clearly I never knew that some of them can't slide and others do not bend both sides

Can you do video on Cutting Metal Meteorite in Half on Miter Saw w/ a Diablo Diamond Blade and Lubricant?
Hi Anika,
Very happy so find a woman doing woodworking! I subscribed right away. I see you have mouthbreathers commenting. I'm here for good content and good vibes.
She’s also smart, engaging, likable and respectable, but fuck that let’s focus on looks, right?

I don't know what took me so long to find you. Every question I had was answered and I thank you for the encouragement and knowledge. My confidence level is soaring!
A while ago I bought my own mitersaw in years and it work beautifully
But still thank you very much for your advise on every tool ❤
Glad to help
Just bought my first miter saw to level up my DIY projects and this video helped A LOT. Thank you for taking the time to explain the kerf, too. Appreciate it!
Your advice about the kerf is invaluable. Yours was the only RUclips video about miter saws that addressed the kerf! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video, thanks for making a clean video with quality audio and a good camera . Not a lot of instructional videos this well produced in the DIY space

I'm glad you explain in a way I understand. Thank you.
Thank you for a comprehensive tutorial on how to make cuts. I also appreciate you covering the kerf concept.
Glad it was helpful!
Lot of good points I didn't think about!
I just got one at the side of the road for freeee! Works great :)
For freeeeeeeeeee?
Lord Vader he stole it
Just paused the video to say how great it is for me. Perfect explanation for a beginner like me. Thanks!
You're welcome!
THANK YOU for explaining kerf so simply! I saw other videos where the instructors seemed to just assume everyone knew what a kerf was.
Im in Puerto Rico and new to all this thank you for your help I’m now making a list of what I’m going to buy
Very helpful!! I'm a lone Lerner so I rely on videos like yours. I am engaged on a huge project, it is a house that I bought. What a great beginners video. This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
Thank you, I just bought a miter saw and your explanation was simple and not boring to watch, again, THANK YOU
The first thing my Dad taught me when using power tools is ALWAYS know where your hands and feet are! LOL!
Sounds stupid but he is damn right!
As long as you don’t know that your fingers are already on the floor...
Sound advice!
My father cut three of his fingers off with a saw so I am always extra careful
Very true. My grandpa lost part of his thumb on the table saw. Never use power tool if you are tired or under influence of beer or alcohol. I sometime like to drink beer doing wood working but aware on how much I consume. I need to get dust mask, not covid mask.
Very happy to see a woman making woodworking videos. Great work! Thank you for the helpful tips!
I just purchased my first miter saw. I’m so excited to use it and I’m so nervous to use it. Your video has helped me feel more comfortable. My first task is cutting quarter round for my baseboards. Do you have any tips for this particular project?
Just make sure to align the blade and double check angles before cutting.
Anika I just got my first DeWalt single bevel miter saw, watching your video gave me the courage to use it,thanks and I love you.
The wood should not move at all as long as you hold it in place. Even then, you don’t really have to use much pressure.
You could also clamp the wood to the mitre saw table if you want to have help holding it down but it really doesn't pull or move and Anika is correct you don't need very much pressure xoxoxo
New wood worker here! Thanks so much!, I didn't even realize about kirf, super helpful video thank you for sharring! Stay safe.
Could you do a video on how to measure? Nobody has one. I’m starting with zero experience and have yet to buy any power tools because the absolute basics aren’t available. :(
This!

Yessss
Great suggestion, I will keep that in mind when I do my next video
That last tip is gold.
What happens when your miter saw isn't large enough to cut a 2x8? Do you recommend doing one cut and then flipping to finish?
You can try doing that but it is hard to get perfect alignment of the blade. In such a case, I would suggest using a circular saw.
use a regular hand saw and 1 minute of sweat.. it won't kill you.
@@djjeff1727 They actually make these electric saws that you can hold in your hands now.....
It's been four years since this and your other videos made me want a mitre saw. Four days ago, I finally got my very own one.

Thank you so much I’ve never used a miter saw I am getting ready to take an online woodworking class and no absolutely nothing so this video was fantastic and exactly what I needed. I am very excited about looking at the rest of your content. Thank you so much again
Thanks for this straight to the point, no fluff, easy to understand video. Great job.
you're welcome and thank you for your kind words!
Thank you so much Anika, first saw user here and I am so lost, but not anymore. Blessings!
I've been getting into very light woodworking lately, I've used a mitre saw before but wanted to make sure there's nothing I'm missing so I found this video. I look for videos like this all the time, and over and over and over, the ones that help me the most end up being videos by women. Just wanted to shout out how cool women in woodworking are, and say thanks for being so smart and cool;
Thank you for making a video for TRUE beginners! You are so clear and give all the background info and definitions! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
You are so welcome!
Fantastic!
This is the first I've heard about the KERF concept. Very well explained.
So helpful! I really want to give a miter saw a try but have always been so intimidated by it.
That is a good teaching and a practical one foe that matter. Before now, I was always fidgety about handling Mitre saw.
I can always reach out to you whenever the need arises. Thank you.
Well said!
Thank you SO much for this detailed explanation. No fuss, very clear, and very approachable explanations. I really appreciate you taking the time to help the rest of us feel more comfortable with intimidating power tools!
You are so welcome!
I have watched a few videos on how to this use this miter saw, all made by men, and not one of them gave the details you have. For instance a kerf. I’m new to using one of these so it’s not something I would automatically know. Best video I have seen on this. Thank you.
Thank you very much!
Thanks!
You bet!
When I saw you doing this I immediately subscribed. I need to find your video showing all the tools I need.
Thanks for the sub! Here is a link to that video: ruclips.net/video/mE98SKZjl5U/видео.html
Great video. I am buying a radial saw tomorrow, I enjoy building shutters , picture frames and trim molding.
Thank you. Amazing simple explanation with lots of crucial information in one video! I am a subscriber now.
This is very informative. I have ordered my first miter saw and I have never used one before and thought it would be a good saw to have for basic board cutting etc. This video really helped me understand the basics I will need to know. Thank you.
Great tips ma'am. Surprised to see a lady doing it though, not in Malaysia. I'm 60 and I haven't seen one till today. Keep up the good work. Thanks.
Wasted so much expensive oak to make frames for stained glass. What a learning curve, I thought it would be so-o easy. Thanks for the video...
Awesome video. I just received my sliding compound miter saw. Can’t wait to get going on my projects.
Good luck!
What a great instructional video! I never really knew how this saw worked until I watched your video....I've always used my little circular saw (with marginal success) for around the house stuff.....now I'm excited to buy one of these.....thanx again!
Glad I could help!
Thanks for the basics a mitre saw is my next power to I want to buy and you have explained it clearly I never knew that some of them can't slide and others do not bend both sides
Just purchased my first one and you really helped me understand how to use it!!! So excited!
Thank you. The best how-to-use a mitre saw video I found!
Thank you so much
