The butcher in diablo 1 was what you would call an out of depth enemy, so more often than not, I would clear a couple of levels below the butcher and then come back for him. Also if you got the butcher quest you would miss out on the Leoric quest and vice versa.

that's why i also enjoyed the modded version that had all quests and added things to some of the quests!
