Melissa sobbing at the piano... gets me every time. I watched this when it aired and it's still a work of art all these years later. "But I got better..." is exactly what survivor's guilt sounds like.

Melissa sobbing at the piano is what gets me every time. The guilt that she must have been feeling for letting their fight be the last thing between them.😢

This is one of those TV moments that's always stayed with me. I still remember Michael telling Hope, "Gary's dead," and my wife jumping up from the couch shouting , "WHAT???!!!" A completely shocking and out-of-left-field moment in TV history.
The acting was nothing short of brilliant...down to the quiet acting of Elliot and the look of total devastation on his face at the tragic loss of their friend.

@@sgvlfamily So do I. This was a critically acclaimed show that was taken off the air too soon. I still cry when I re-watch this episode. Gary's death was the saddest episode of any major character dying on any show. Sid from Knots Landing was second, but not a close second.

This clip reminds me how much I loved & hated this show. Loved Ken Olin's acting and how hard his character tried to hold himself together while trying to comfort everyone else. But I hated the character of Hope. So selfish, spoiled & completely out of touch with anyone else's feelings. That monologue to Elliot about not knowing what to do & that she could not be a comfort........her husband just lost his best friend, he had to go alone to the morgue & identify his body not to mention tell his wife what happened & Hope made it all about her. Then in the next episode with Gary's funeral she told one of her friends she could not listen to Melissa cry anymore. Just utterly selfish & cold. It reminded why so many critics said this show was nothing but whining. But I was so devastated by the storyline twist of expecting Nancy to die & out of nowhere it was Gary who did. I do not remember being so shocked & grief stricken by a show & the death of a character until 10 years later with GH's aids storyline with Stone.

@simply live simply I completely agree with you about Hope, too. I also remember her comment about Melissa's crying. If I recall correctly she said it in the kitchen, just like her talk with Elliot in this episode. Maybe it's the kitchen? LOL just kidding. She was truly a terrible character. I was in college when this show aired & me and my roommates were appalled when Hope's parents visited and she was so textbook-hated her mother but loved her father, who she still called "daddy". Any woman over the age of 20 still calling her father "daddy" has serious issues LOL.

Appreciate your thoughts Hope. I loved the show when it originally aired. Watching this in 2022 - I'm struck by how much of a caretaker she is expected to be, by everyone else and also by herself. She starts the day by looking after after Elliot and Nancy's kids, along with her own. She puts her heart and soul into it. Then she's helping to make a little "cancer free" party for Nancy. After Hope finds out about Gary, Elliot brings his kids back to her house. How late is it now? Likely the original plan was for the kids to stay over, so she's back on duty with them. Then she's running around asking people if they want coffee or food. And after all that, she has to tell her best friend about Gary's death. It's a lot. If I were her I would have nothing left at that point. Yes she is whiny. But maybe she has no idea she can say no to any of these duties. I would have let Elliot tell Ellyn. He offered. Regarding Melissa - she's over at their house starting the night of Gary's death, and maybe for several more days more if we count in time to prepare for the funeral. What if Melissa has done nothing but cry at their house that entire time, and Hope is making sure she's eating, has a bed and clean towels, all the rest. Hope and Michael likely participate in planning the service and host people after. Her comment about the endless crying is cold, but I can understand being resentful. And again, could she tell Melissa she needs to go back to her place? Of course, but maybe she didn't feel like she could.
