Thom asked Neil at a party the night before the show, if he minded if he sang this song. Neil said "sure, but if you are gonna sing it, you have to use the piano I recorded it on" so he loaned it to him. precious!
@@bigchief124 he actually said it in an interview I saw somewhere on here, look up “thom yorke Neil young” there should be an interview where he’s talking exclusively about him.
holy gods! i somehow have never heard one of my favorite modern artist playing a cover of one of my favortie classic artists best songs..... i am utterly speechless at the sheer beauty of Thoms delivery.... this is on repeat until i pass out
I saw Neil Young for the first time 2 weeks ago, acoustic show he's in his 70s STILL FUCKING AMAZING, and in 2 days I will see Radiohead for the first time ever. Two of my all time favorite artists ever. This cover, which I never knew existed brings two music worlds together. And how fitting. Neil KILLED it best show ever AND HE PLAYED THIS SONG ON AN ORGAN, at 72! Can't wait for Radiohead.
ive been a big radiohead fan for some time , and i just started listening to neil young, and i was looking for songs by him and i found this, its absolutely amazing.
Warmed my broken heart at the death of my beloved nephew - thank you Neil & Thom for giving solace at such a sad time - I knew my nephew is in a new home in the sun -
I was surprised the performance wasn't on RUclips at all, so I decided to upload this recording (purchased from iTunes). I also wish there was a full video! lol
Thank you! If you search RUclips for "BBC desert island discs, w/ Thom Yorke", around 28 minutes in he talks about this performance. Neil Young was watching from the side of the stage.
Awesome! I don't think anybody could cover it as well as Thom did, he has that certain quirkeyness in his voice much like Neil does which is especially noticible on this song.
OH MY GOSH I've been a life-long Neil Young Fan, (ok, so at 18, it's not THAT long) and when I heard this on WYEP's Block Party, I couldn't exactly tell wether it was Neil or somebody else. Heard some differences, but it sounded almost identical. (until the violiny vocals) Now that I'm lstening again 4 minutes later, I just love this cover. One of few Neil Covers that are good, and it's done nearly identical to how Neil did it! Even matched the crowd aplause!
Neil from Oxform, THERE is a town in North England . . . . . Dream comfort memory with Jonny . . . Would love to see more covers. Amazing "Tell me Why" cover at Hollywood bowl on the Radiohead Tour.
A beautiful song revisited by an equally beautiful energy..(I do think the lyrics are clearer...but that might be technology.) Thank you Messrs Young and Yorke for giving this to us..
I don't care what anybody says, Neil Young is the greatest songwriter ever. Better than Dylan, better than Cohen, better than Lennon, better than Richards/Jagger. His music transcends generational and social/political barriers and always remains relevant. The man is the only artist I know of that never ever compromised his music in exchange for fame and glory. He never ever caved to the pressures put on him by the greedy corporate executives salivating for the next big hit record. Neil young is one of a kind.
What's great about this, is that Thom Yorke isn't trying to copy Neil Young. Even though their voices are quite similar. He's just enjoying singing a song of someone's he admires.
Radiohead is my favorite band as well. And Neil Young is certainly one of my favorite songwriters. Just to clarify, though, this is JUST Thom Yorke. The other Radiohead members, Jonnny Greenwood, Ed O'Brien, Colin Greenwood, and Phil Selway, weren't present. There are, however, other videos on RUclips with the entire band covering the song. This solo Yorke performance also featured a rare acoustic rendition of the Radiohead hit "Paranoid Android." Cool beans.
am seeing Thom at the big chill in august this summer. Cant wait, wud b nice if he plays this, but tbh anything he plays will be a high point in my life!!
Neil Young is a visionary and I count myself among his followers. Hell, I grew up in the same city as he did (Winnipeg). Yes, they were different life experiences, but if you know what living on the Prairies is like then you'll understand what it means to be at the centre of everything, but in the middle of nowhere at the same time.
Neil Young was sitting right behind him when he played this, and Young let him use the very piano that the song was written on. There's no rules playing covers and when the original artist gives you the blessing to play (Thom asked him that day if it was alright), you can play it however you wish.
Thom asked Neil at a party the night before the show, if he minded if he sang this song. Neil said "sure, but if you are gonna sing it, you have to use the piano I recorded it on" so he loaned it to him. precious!
I swear you can hear that piano, my ears pricked up on the first note,
Chills, its like being given a sword by the knight himself.
I believe you, but I need proof because this amazing.

@@bluehole6019 Thank you!
this makes me cry.
fucking amazing. Neil Young is one of my favourite artists, and I love Radiohead to death.
Thom Yorke is absolutely fantastic.
Agreed! He did a grand job of it!
10 points to captain obvious :D
Thank you desert Island discs
Same reason I found it - gobsmaked by it.
Same. Thanks to Neil Young giving us two really great versions of your song.
Yes!
Same reason im here
holy gods! i somehow have never heard one of my favorite modern artist playing a cover of one of my favortie classic artists best songs..... i am utterly speechless at the sheer beauty of Thoms delivery.... this is on repeat until i pass out
I never thought that another dude can sing this song other than neil young ....
And you were right.
wow I just realized how similar Young's and Yorke's voices are
Plato describes this as a mimicry of honor, giving tribute to him who has been important to the advancement of your own art. Nice tribute. Nice bloke.
That realm of beauty beyond words you hear people talk about... I think Thom Yorke lives there.
I think this might be the most beautiful thing i have ever heard in my entire life.

I love how the crowd cheers after he says felt like getting high just like in the OG.
One of the most beautiful covers, Radiohead live, songs, ever. Pure love.
Two Greatest Artists Neil Young & Radiohead Thom. ✌️
Good... His voice fits so perfectly! This is just an unbelievably beautiful testimony to human fineness.
This is pure, other worldly bliss...
ive been a big radiohead fan for some time , and i just started listening to neil young, and i was looking for songs by him and i found this, its absolutely amazing.
thom yorke's one of the few musicians who could have pulled this cover off so perfectly
Warmed my broken heart at the death of my beloved nephew - thank you Neil & Thom for giving solace at such a sad time - I knew my nephew is in a new home in the sun -
Both artists reveal their passion.
absolutely love this rendition

Here is the YT video of this brilliant performance: ruclips.net/video/E8TwYN_4tSg/видео.html
Thom did a wonderful job and wow, on the actual piano used by Neil on the original...while Neil stood by listening!!
Glenvis not the same piano used on the original. The story is nice enough. No need to embellish
Ian Pleasant Neil Young did give the original piano he used on the song to Thom for him to cover it on
Sung with such respect, such beauty.
So cute to see Thom cover a song he likes
wow , greatest songwriter of the past 20 years sings music from the greatest songwriter of the 70s..........ty i did know this exsisted
this is just crazy...why haven't i heard this cover before...
Thom sings a Neil Young song almost as well as Neil does.
Maybe better?
Nearly as good.
@@MattCarrollDesign
Uhh, no.
"almost" is the operative word. Young's voice is in another league.
No
Truly magnificent...tears in my eyes
Great song...really puts an ethereal touch to the song hearing Thom Yorke's voice
brought a tear to my glass eye, it did :D
Thom love Neil Young- one musical genius pays homage to another -
love it- love it - love it-
Best Neil young cover I have ever heard by quite a long shot
This is too perfect.
when i heard this it was such an "aha!" moment, realizing what a big influence neil young must have been on his vocals in general!
He nailed it. That was beautiful.
this makes me love thom yorke even more
....massive props to Sir Thom and Patriot Neil...wage peace y'all...!
As a huge fan of Neil Young since the early 70s, all I have to say is.... Brilliant!
I am grateful to have watched this live. What a great weekend that was! Seems so long ago now.
this is one of the greatest covers ever made....
what a powerful song. what an amazing body of work. thanx for this. nihilisticly shakey
Awesome! I don't think anybody could cover it as well as Thom did, he has that certain quirkeyness in his voice much like Neil does which is especially noticible on this song.
Wooooow! That is phenomenal!!!👏👏👏

when i read things like this it makes me emotional. i feel exactly the same about neil, saw him a few onths ago in leeds and it was overwhelming.
Ray Davies is right up there with all of them.
MoburgsMyHero Young is brilliant but not quite as good as Townes Van Zandt, The Songwriters songwriter.
Joni Mitchell has also never compromised her music in pursuit of commercial success. She too is an amazing songwriter.
MoburgsMyHero I'd say Young, Dylan and Cohen are about equal and better than those others
Thom Yorke singing After the Gold Rush just feels right.
This is one of my favourite things in the world.
Wonderfully beautiful
It is clear a great tribute, and the crowd understand it like that when cheering after the getting high line.
I had never heard this song from either Neil or Thom. What a great song!
I like this cover. Two of the greatest voices of all time.
Simply gorgeous.
I'll probably get shot for this but Thoms voice is so much easier on the ears and I prefer his version.
once i heard this it was just an "aha!" moment, realizing what a big influence neil young must have been on his vocals in general.
neil's version for me is unsurpassable, but I love thom's take here. love mr yorke...
That is obviously a labour of love.
both are my favorite artists
i songs.. i grew up with neli's music. I love it when someone special can make it their own...
Im melting right now
What's great about this, is that Thom Yorke isn't trying to copy Neil Young. Even though their voices are quite similar. He's just enjoying singing a song of someone's he admires.
this song is perfect for thom's voice
Like a lullaby, a lovely weepy-drifty kinda lullaby
Great cover of a great song.

im liking the cover :)
Thom is the wizard of pure.

Great cover, almost identical at that, like neil was performing live
i think they are both great and we should not try to compare them two. they are both light.
Neil Young & Radiohead..It's like dream....
Wow.
my life is now totally complete
