Just wanted to comment briefly in case anyone thinks "oh no, drama within the OSCS ranks!"
When I first started doing reviews on this channel, honesty and transparency were my governing principles. Our review format is all about shining a light on core aspects of a game, while letting the viewer make their own decisions about whether those aspects might work for them or not. That's what we are all about.
So I appreciate Jason's review, and I think he makes great points about the game, both potentially positive and negative depending on the type of gamer you are.
Honestly, if I reviewed Flame & Fang myself, it might not be all pros. Maybe none of the games I've designed would be. That's just the nature of creative work. But I'm very proud of the game, and I think it's a ton of fun to play. And I'm thankful that Jason enjoyed it too, and took the time to review it :)
(Jason here). I appreciate Mike for opening a space for genuine critical review. Everything we say on this channel represents our honest thoughts, 100%. We feel that’s the only real way to build a sustainable review channel over the long term.
Looking forward to getting my copy. Thanks for the excellent review!
Thanks for the comprehensive review and nuanced thoughts. Excited to show this to my son when he’s a bit older.
Deck building and campaigns are really really difficult to marry together. I remember complaining about this a little bit with I wanna say Hero Realms. That I just wish I could hold onto even just a few cards that I got from the upgrade pool. I did like how they let you upgrade one of your core starting cards
Interesting review. Thank you. I've played the first 2 scenarios with my 10 yo son and we both really enjoyed them and want to play more, so for us it is a definite hit. Personally, I like that when you buy a card you discard one at the same time -- this prevents having a deck that gets bloated with starter cards, although I agree that buying cards can be a slow process. The monster deck is actually fun for us -- for one thing, many of them have additional powers beyond just a number of hit/damage (for example, some heal themselves) but they are simple enough that it is fun and usually relatively quick to defeat them (plus the art is fun). I love that you can put card aside for future turns, the way health works (and how you go about getting back your hearts), the way the story cards mix flavor text, discovery, setup and goals together. The only thing that I wonder is how much replayability this game will have once we have done the 8 scenarios -- we'll see (and the game wasn't very expensive -- I mean, we've also bought plenty of games like the Unlock series where you play the 3 scenarios only once and that's it and we are still ok with that). We are very much looking forward to doing all of the scenarios and following the story to the end.
Not sure if this is the place but today an unasssuming package arrived and it contained Flame and Fang 🎉🎉🎉 it's gorgeous! looking forward to trying it out.
That’s great!
Thanks for sharing. And, thank you for your honesty. I greatly appreciate that about this channel.
Fair review Jason. I didn't really think about the minion cards, but yeah, maybe they could have done something better with them. Once you get the magic tokens, I found you had so many strategic ways to play hand. Loved that part.
Wow, you’re brave for taking this review on. I haven’t played my copy yet, but I look forward to seeing how much I agree or disagree.
So my 2 in 2 review
1 Full on pro: Have to say really respect the reviews honesty and gives a real strength to the channels non-biased objectivity and truth (of the reviewers opinion)! Could have so easily been 5 pros, aren't we amazing, but wasnt so full on kudos!
2: Mix: Sorry, not a fan of this type of review only becuaee i have no option of going out and getting it. So its more 'here is what i could have backed' which isnt as fun to watch.
It’s still delivering now. If the reception continues to be positive, we hope to do a reprint campaign soon!
Eagerly awaiting my copy in EU. Judging from this review, I think I'll have no problems with the design decisions. We'll see.
Also share a link on where to best buy the game?
You can’t buy it yet. If things go well, we will try to do a reprint campaign.
So far, I am enjoying it so far and it is challenging (Chapter 4!j. The puzzle is what draws me. Figuring out how to best use the cards you have is the strongest part of the game, for me
I agree! I made that my number three, wanting it to be my number one. I just wish I could engage that card play with the better cards more often.
