The song is about Chris' battle with drug addiction-burden in my hand. He was very open about his struggles with both addiction and depression.
After digging into the lyrics of their songs, I must agree...THE DAY I TRIED TO LIVE was another example
He was an alcoholic not a drug addict, it was alcohol
@@bradydunn5910 since when isnt alcohol a drug?
@@bradydunn5910 alcohol is a drug by definition. just because its legal in most countries of the world it doesnt mean that it does different things to the brain and your health. lol.
@@bradydunn5910 chris said in an interview he was abusing oxycontin.
RIP Chris Cornell....what an amazing voice
Ahhhh, that VOICE!! Fuckin miss that... Chris was one of a kind! RIP
Another one of those almost happy sounding songs, that holds such a deeper, darker subtext... This is one of my favorite Soundgarden tracks.
Yes I totally agree with you sadly we lost a gem of talent he had such an distinctive voice. Rip Chris Cornell you left us way too soon 🙏
Chris was immensely talented, humble and a beautiful soul. The melody vocally and musically are so unique. He put his heart and soul into all of it. ❤
You can tell Lex is grunge by her response to Brad saying she's a pop chick lol
I know, right! It was a perfect response to that suggestion.
Right, I felt that too.
She's a metal chick!
So happy that people get lit to how good grunge was.
Brad: Gives a passionate speech about the topic of this song, exploring the possibilities of it being about murder, a brain tumor, or maybe even suicide.
Lex: It's about drugs 😐
Brad: Oh. That's much simpler.
😂🤣😂
That's why I love these guys so much haha
Do “Blow up the outside world” next by Soundgarden. I also love Grunge Lex. Great reaction guys 🙋🏻♀️👍🏼🙌🏼👏🏼💜🇨🇦
Good choice!...or "My Wave"
Yes please!!
Never could get into that one, but it seems really popular. I must have a slightly unusual taste I guess.
yes, yes
When Lex says "Pop? Uggh No!" That warmed my heart. She likes her music real! You're a lucky man Brad, she's a keeper! Any woman who has a such a passion for real music and loves to debate it is one to hold on to. You guys make me smile every day. I love how you approach songs and delve into them without taking things overly seriously. Cheers me up when I get home from work and want to chill on youtube. Rest in peace Chris Cornell, one of Soundgarden's best from the days just before they originally split up. Miss you Chris x
Lex reflected my thoughts on Pop, "Uggh No....."
Grunge is emotion with a side of music.
In 97, Soundgarden personally closed out the grunge era with this masterpiece of an album.
The Day I Tried To Live is my favorite Soundgarden song
This one is tough, as it is about addiction, the guilt, and the demons involved. Keep strong!!
I had no idea this song was about addiction, it makes perfect sense now lol, thanks for making sense of this song for me.
Those demons though
The guilt, mostly… Sadly..
It's not about addiction.
To answer Chris's question in this song.... yes, I have cried for him. Many times. He was such an amazing talent and is sorely missed.
Pretty sure this song is about heroin addiction…”I shot my love today” is shooting heroin, “I lost my head again” is about relapsing, and the needle is the “burden in his hand”…at least that’s how I always interpreted it
That is how I always took it too.
Think its about alcoholism
The lyrics of "Burden in My Hand" suggest the song is about a man who murders a woman he is in a relationship with and leaves her in the desert, not without regret. Some fans believe the lyrics are 'deeper' than the surface and indicative of something such as drug abuse or an abusive relationship; however, the guitarist Kim Thayil called the song "the "Hey Joe" of the '90s."[1]
I don’t think he did H he a battle w pills and alcohol
@@nickkleiber8636 agree
I think the line that hits me most is "follow me into the desert, as desperate as you are" meaning you want so badly to have parts of me that I can't give...so if we go out here, and I lose my head, would you lie for me? So you can keep me or so I won't have to face myself.
Along with "out in the sunshine. The sun is mine" ,you want the happy good part of me...can you handle the dark. And a burden in my hand because he now feels responsible for someone else's happiness when he doesn't have his own
Heidi for the WIN! You should interpret lyrics on RUclips. I’d subscribe. That’s spot on.
Great driving song😀 Cornell does so much metaphorical language that sometimes you just gotta assume he's doing the tortured soul thing, and just appreciate the music and his goosebumps voice. Try "Like Suicide", and don't find out what it's about until after a reaction. Epic song, probably my fav.
Excellent guitar solo by Kim as well! Fantastic suggestion!
Finding out what that song was about made me like it more tbh
@@cactustactics same, but only after listening to it 3 or 4 times
Yes! Grunge it is for Lex's birthday! PEARL JAM - "Don't Call Me Daughter"!!
So glad you're doing this one. It is probably my favorite and I don't think it got the credit it deserved. It's more stripped down and really showcases Chris's voice.
This song hits me differently. O remember having a tough day in college about 15 years ago. I went out to my car and put on a rock station. This song came on, i maxed out the volume and my day was fine after that. I battled drug addiction and alcoholism for many years.
Got to love grunge. I'm getting flash backs from my teens listening to this.
The Day I Tried To Live is another great track of theirs you guys could check out.
Damn, those vocals ❤ The sheer amount of vocal talent that came from the grunge era is astounding.
Lex smacking down the idea of being in a pop band made my day. Brad, buddy, she just said she wanted to be in a grunge band. Grunge artists were pretty much anti-pop in everything they did!! I could definitely see Lex in a grunge band. And I'd buy her band's album in instant!
These guys were so effing awesome live. I got to see them several times in the early 90's and on this tour,96.
ya'll really need to hear Slaves and Bulldozers. Chris goes off in that song. My personal Favorite.
Brad's face when he's trying to figure out the lyrics 🤣🤣🤣
Music to Brad is a complex math problem that must be solved, not something to groove to and enjoy.
Like many of your viewers, I love Soundgarden / grunge also. Your willingness to listen to grunge & metal with an open mind is one of the reasons i was initially drawn to your platform. Soundgarden has some great songs from early in their recording careers that often get overlooked. Some great early ones are - Gun; Beyond The Wheel; I Awake; and Loud Love. Thanks for your reactions and i hope you do more Soundgarden.
Louder than Love is a GREAT album..
You guys are perfect examples of human perfection. Xoxoxoxo
I absolutely LOVE your reactions to Chris Cornell/Soundgarden/Audioslave songs. You both have very different reactions to them. Brad seems to try to make sense of the lyrics, while Lex listens, gets her ideas and vibes with it. These are songs I love listening to and it's awesome seeing you guys reacting to them ❤
"Pop?....arghhhh!" Exactly Lex...i think grunge suits you down to the ground.
The thing about grunge is it's real. They suffered and killed themselves to dig all that music gold.
Truth is a lot of these guy were going to die young whether they made the music or not. They didn't kill themselves making the music as much as they got the music out before they were gone. (Cobain is probably the exception, but who knows where his depression would have taken him even without the fame.)
@@cletusinterruptus3963 Yeah i didn't mean that it's a death culture. Only that rock and roll when taken to it's apex will shorten your life significantly. That horse...
I was lucky to grow up in Seattle when this movement started.
Killer bass, guitar, drums and Chris' vocals soaring through it all. A poet and melody master.
"Close your eyes and bow your head, I need a little sympathy. For the fear is strong and love is for everyone who isn't me" -- One of the best lines ever written.
Janes Addiction - Ocean Size, Mountain Song, Up the Beach....
Absolutely love your reaction to this. One of my favorite songs of all time✌
This was so good because the two of you showed the process of being a fan of this music. She was grooving to the performance and groove of the music, without a ton of thought to the lyrical content. He is sitting there reading the lyrics and probably thinking the song is really messed up. Yep, that’s 90’s Seattle rock for you in a nutshell.
YESSS!!! Any and ALL things Chris Cornell. My favorite of all time. This man's voice was like no other!!!! Keep him going. PLEASE!!
Love you Chris. To all my brothers who have battled with these struggles with addiction and generally living in this world. Blessings on you and your family ❤
"It's the middle of the chorus, I guess time to pause" - Brad, probably.
He’s not a fan music. I think he would rather read a book of lyrics. Some people are void of emotion
Have you never heard this song before?
Do "Slaves & Bulldozers" to see what Chris Cornell really was made of! Such an underrated song and it shows his true range!
best rock vocal ever
A classic grunge sound garden from 90’s i grew up too. I’m a huge grunge guy myself
Pretty Noose is my favorite by them. So much fire. Blow Up the Outside World and Fell on Black Days are next.
Mailman by Soundgarden is a great chill grunge song. Also 4th of July
Will ALWAYS give a like for Soundgarden, Audioslave, and Chris Cornell!!
I don't think I've seen Brad move his bod as much as he does here. it's good to see. And watching Lex groove is always good to see.
The opening note to this song gives me chills every time. That voice.
Yes, the moment you discover the new levels under the rock bottom. Chris was occupying this space as we all do. Be kind to yourself. Be Brave.
Check out "Mailman","Holy Water",or "Loud Love".
Yes,,my favorite Soundgarden song, my second favorite Chris Cornell vocal behind Sunshower, so awesome that you did this one 🤘 Thank you so much 👍
I love the songs off this album so much. Good choice.
Not too chill not too sad. That's actually a prefect description of grunge.
The bass riffs in this tune are great!
One of my best memories to this song was going sand boarding with the folks in 2011 and I was standing on top of this dune looking out the view of other sand dunes while having my ear buds in listening to this song.
Lex says I like my happy with a twist of darkness, hahaha
saw them 2x. .once I worked security backstage and front of the stage at lollapalooza(1996) when they played with metallica, the ramones, and the wu tang clan....it was right when this song was on the radio.....I then saw them again in 2013....my friend and I went to the top of an outside theater to smoke. well at the outer/upper reach of the outdoor theater his voice literally was as powerful as you hear in this video...always loved his voice when I was young and they were out, but that show in 2013 showed me how he is an alltime great vocalist...one of the best ever
This is my new favorite addiction 😁
Love seeing you guys experience hearing some of the soundtrack of my life thus far for the first time, and me riding along, getting to remember what it was like and revisiting memories. You guys rock 🤘
Props to the dude actually listening to the lyrics
RIP CC...
Brad: You could be in a pop band?
Lex: Pop?!?! Uhhhhh . . . . . . no!
Love the reaction, Burden in My Hand is my favorite Soundgarden tune.
DAAAMN ,, BRAD finally got one right😂😂👍🏼
The grunge shower playlist is a must Lex!
You're right Lex, you can't go wrong with Grunge!
One of the Greatest Male Vocalist/ Front men ever. R.I.P C.C🤘😎 Thanks for the Memories. Sound Garden Live were Phenominal 🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼
This whole album is great
It is. Kinda underrated I think.
Totally underrated. I always liked it, but it took me a number of years to really absorb how great it is. This band had such a knack for making weird time changes and drop D chords totally palatable. They never made a bad record, and I'm partial to the previous two albums, but this definitely stands the test of time.
@H C In a big way. Great bands borrow from other greats and find a way to make it their own.
Heroin had a hold of all the great "Grunge" lead singers. From experience. It opens a whole different portal of each individuals artistic ability.
I love to watch these 2 talk to each other. 😃
One of the best rock gongs of the 90s
After watching a bunch of your videos I realized you two are the perfect example of left brain vs right brain.
"POP? Ehh!" Love it! 😹
Somehow this song is the one I like the most. And feel it the deepest since I heard it for first around 97-98. It’s just the song I want in my funeral at the end. 🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹
Good reaction.Try tighter and tighter on this album, a very emotional song. Overfloater too.
This may be my favorite Soundgarden song, but Fresh Tendrils is possibly tied with it.
Please consider that lyrics are not usually literal. I believe he’s talking about self-destruction, not actually shooting someone.
He said that Burden was a 90s version of "Hey Joe" from the 60s. It is about shooting an unfaithful lover.
@Susan Corr Couldn't agree more.
It could very well be about both. Keep in mind it was not exactly cool to talk about drug addiction in TV interviews back in the 90s and songwriting is a pretty layered thing. "Follow me into the dessert as thirsty as you are" is definitely about being off drugs. If it's not, it's the best line written about drugs unintentionally, lol.
Kim Thayil is the unsung hero of the band, often outshined (hey-oh!) by the god-tier singing of Cornell. He gives each song such a unique sound. Like wind chimes in space.
A great quote by Kim Thayil: “We weren’t out to get laid, we weren’t out to get high, we just wanted to make you fucking hurt”
👊
Matt Cameron's drumming is just as important
That voice , one of the best ever
These metaphors completely nail the state of being mired in addiction.
You guys need to check out The Day I Tried To Live by Soundgarden
"Pop??!!! Ugh..." priceless
Best part of this whole video!
Love it!! Pop? Ugh.. Lex you the best thing since cell phones.
You gotta admit it's funny watching Lex smiling and grooving to the darkest song ever written
Lex reacts exactly how I want her to react to my favorites.
As someone who grew up immersed in grunge and the grunge scene at its peek I love to see how much Lex loves it! Makes me happy! Keep up the great videos!
Hey, thanks for your content, I've been really enjoying it, keep doing what you do.
I'm loving her vibe to one of my most favorite songs of all time!!!!
some of my earliest memories of music with this song, i remember having the cassette with the lyrics of the cassette paper. fuck i miss those days
Fell on black daysssssss
Usually Lex hits the meaning of songs but this time Brad nailed it "Self Deletion" is the perfect way to describe the meaning of this song. Right on Bro.
Lex has great taste in music! I too would love to be in a Grunge Band. Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in chains and Nirvana are tops.
Hahaa I love these guys reactions, Brad is disecting every word and Lex is like what words?
Great!!!! Guys!! I like your reactions!!! Soundgarden has a lot of fantastic tracks. One of them is “Blind Dogs” this song is amazing but nobody react to it.
Lex gets it
Its catchy dark and heavy lol
Lex loves Grunge, that's awesome!!
Super unknown is one of my favorite albums of all time…every song is fire
This isn’t on superunknown…
Lex you remind me of me when I was a teenager In the 70s with the long patch cords..And just getting lost in the music...
Hey Lex and Brad,
Soundgardens Zero Chance is a killer song ,
Much ❤ from 🇦🇺
This song was the first song of a mix I had for my Sun morning ball hockey league. Always amped me up as I drove to the rink, despite what it is about. You have to play it as loud as your ears can handle, though.
Rain When I Die is such a dope song. The melody when they go into the hook is so catchy, almost like an unexpected bit of beauty in a morass of angsty noise. Just drags you in.
This came out when I was a teenager and was one of the first actual albums I ever got into (my big brother bought the CD). I always wanted to have this track playing in the opening cinematics of a tank game or tank movie at the time. Now I want to start a road trip in the summer with this on the stereo, car windows open, sunglasses, driving into the sun.
Such a great band...maybe you guys want to take a listen to one of their earlier songs..."Rusty Cage"?
Hell yeah, Rusty Cage doesn't get the love it deserves .
