- EarthQuaker Devices founder, president, and lead designer Jamie Stillman talks about the Japanese tour his band Relaxer did with Boris and the inspiration for the Hizumitas Fuzz. Jamie details the lengthy process of recreating Boris guitarist Wata’s original ELK BM Sustainar and how he updated the circuit on her 40-year-old, tour-ravaged fuzz pedal for the 21st century. Even cooler than that, Wata herself talks about her new pedalboard mainstay and offers suggestions for new Hizumitas owners (Hint: Play very loud!). “It is a sound that carries through the air and a feeling that leads into space. I want people to feel that,” Wata says. We say, “Hell yeah!”

I bought the hizumitas at a boris show, I was trying to stop buying pedals, but when it was right there in front of me I couldn't resist. It sounds awesome.
Would never imagine this quiet polite lady is a doom demon.
what do you mean she's dressed like she's gonna curse you if you touch her guitar
Another perfect fuzz sound from EarthQuaker. Never miss. I love how Wata speaks about the sound as a part of her art, not from a place of gear worship; reminds me of why we do this to begin with.
Boris have an album called Amplifier Worship 🤣
Lots of bands have effects pedals, but only one band has a Wata! Goddess of noise! 🤟🤟😎❤
I’m totally loving the Hizumitas. Thank you for making it available to all of us.
Glad you're digging it! 🤟
Best pedal ever!
It does deliver what Wata said and in doing so it strongly influences your way a of playing, the other night I spent about two hours rediscovering the e minor with this pedal, its just huge and beautiful...its a cumulonimbus of sound that plays through the room, love it.
Thee only E
I've been loving mine so far. Thanks Jamie, Wata and everyone involved in making this great pedal!
Glad you enjoy it! Thanx for snagging one!
Bought it. Love it! I never thought I'd replace the Hoof on my board, but I'm thrilled it was with another EQD fuzz. They absolutely own fuzz tones!
Love EQD! Thanks for all the killer content!!!
“You got it dude” -Michelle Tanner
Thank You Wata, and EQD!
Thanks ya!
Thanks EQD for the holiday card! By far the coolest one I’ve ever got. Can’t wait to get my hands on this pedal. You guys rule!
The Hizumitas (boosted with TS style drive, in this case a Love Pedal Eternity) is the tone I have been searching for. I'm running it into the crunch channel of my Mark V, with the mids pushed and the gain set low on the amp and sweet mother of god it's a heavy as hell tone. Bone crushingly brutal, thick and beefy, but cuts through incredibly well. It's never leaving my board.
I do the same thing with my plumes going into the hizumitas. It’s just perfect.
I run into the clean channel of my Mesa but into stacked overdrives before hitting the front of the amp (currently Dumble and bluesbreaker style in sequence). Will have to give it a shot into higher gain channels with the gain rolled down.
2:20 lol.... on a serious note love the people of EQD and what they do.
Jamie and Wata!
What a collab.
Right?
@@EarthQuakerDevices hell yeah right!
...and today on Reverb, I ordered a Hizumitas Fuzz and an Astral Destiny Reverb pedal! Thank you EarthQuakerDevices!
I love fuzz and have a few dozen but I never found a Big Muff I really love. The quest has been over since I got my Hizumitas.
Ooh that’s right
Thank y’all for this. Completely tone changing and sonically crushing, and I haven’t put my Orange past notch 2 yet. Cheers from phx AZ
thanks very much for watchin!
Well worth the effort. Has a sound all its own.
Glad u dig
Between the Hizumitas and the Hoof, I have achieved fuzz nirvana. The pedal is amazing!
I got one and absolutely love it. Sounds great into my Matamp and my Hovercraft Caribou amp.
Great story, great pedals - EQD gets it right 👏
Rock on!
I like these collabs between artist and pedal maker (which is also an art.) I hope you guys do more of these in the future. Love my Sunn O))) Life Pedal, might end up having to get this Hizumitas too. It sounds so good.
Maybe Nick Reinhart? I can't imagine what sort of pedal he would come up with.
“Dot’s Pug Summoner”
Been looking this kind of sound forever thank you, i just bought it and would never sell it, got a wide range tonal too ⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️
Quiero unooo 🦠🦠🦠
nice sound, I have an Acapulco gold pedal that I like a lot. Thank for your work .
Glad you like it! Thank you for using our stuff!
Hizumitas Fuzz Sustainar is next on my list I loved the story of the pedals development. I am a fan of Wada's and all of Boris.
Did you work on any of her Dwarfcraft Fuzzes? Love the Hizumitas too!
Thanks!!
Im not very found of Fuzz pedals but the EQD H.Z S looks tempting. I have an over driven/boost tone (Tone Job). Id like to try The Hiz Sustainer just with a slight bit of fuzz bleeding through.
Blend away
This pedal is a freaking monster. I have other Big Muff style pedals, and to me this is somewhere between fuzz and distortion.
I recently got a baritone guitar from Revered that has a bass control. I rolled the bass all the way off and the Hizumitas sounds like a more controlled version of the Acapulco Gold and honestly very close to demos of the real Sunn amps I've heard (it somehow almost doesn't sound like fuzz anymore and instead like a cranked tube amp about to explode, but at a playable volume!). When I add the bass back in, the pedal thickens and saturates giving that classic Big Muff feel, but maybe more articulate?
All I know is that this is my go to fuzz for when I'm writing my own music. I love the stuff you guys do at EQD and this is no exception.

it really does sound like the video
weird thing to convey over youtube compression algorithms
you kinda need to FEEL the air to understand it
good job EQD there is a lot of love for this company, perhaps it seems to me you are like the new EHX. Either way you should be very proud of your hard work . perhaps one day i will own a legit EQD device not "just" a clone .
Thanks for the kind words
🤘👍🏿
Does EQD make a bender inspired pedal?

Re: "Everything had drifted..", 4:50, is that degradation over time or manufacturing tolerances? If degradation, how much can parts "drift"?
Oh they can get faaaarrr outtt maaaannnn
modern Surface Mount Technology (SMT)... Namely Ceramic Capacitors... are great because they have tight tolerances and do not degrade or drift like electrolytic capacitors of yesteryear. The new shit is better...
curious, what does Hizumitas mean?
Hizumi =distortion / tas =more
Why not use a polarity inverter to get it to be negative ground with the same transistors? I mean, it worked, if the artist herself loves it this much, but I would say using the same parts would have been easier, right?
