the brown stains tell the story, that's overheated + seized, towed back to a garage, coolant sorted + new oil + filter, towed back into life, then part-exed into your mates garage hard to bleed, yeah, that's a hint to what happened last time...
Had one (in a Panda) and it blew the head gasket at 60K. That seems to be their weakness - too much pressure in the cooling system and one day it goes bang. Mechanically will go on for ever...so I know that's only a test case of one, but overheating due to loss of coolant is a good way to seize an engine!
Thanks for sharing Alan , many years ago we had a Panda with similar issues to this. The coolant level dropped a couple of times & the following morning it was dragging like this . like you we went for a lower miles replacement. Out of idle curiosity I kept stipping it until the problem revealed itself. As soon as I unbolted the oil pump the engine reovolved smoothly again. I stripped the oil pump & it was full of metal fragmemts & looking down into the sump it was obvious that water was present in the oil ; not much but enough to kill off the oil pump 🙄
@@marinusapeldoorn6631 I assumed it was either a cracked cylinder head or leaking head gasket ; the milage was reasonably high around 180k . If anyone on here is from the south, I`ve recently heard my favourite breaker GR Harris in southbourne is ceasing trading
Nice job Alan 👍 I had one of those Ka's.. I had to take front bumper off to replace suspension arm, to get to the bolt. Brilliant little cars they are. Would be interesting tonknow what's gone wrong with it 🤔
I brought a saxo years ago with the same problem been sat took the fan belt off and it was a seized alternator with the fan belt off it turned over fine
There is nothing wrong with the 1.2VVT Fiat Fire engine they are just lacking of owner maintenance they can clear if looked after properly as they are very simple 250,000 miles. if you should require a more simple engine get a 1.1 Panda with the none interference engine 👍
These engine are actually surprisingly rebost. Coolant system is exactly the same on the mk2 punto, utter nightmare to bleed. By the time the Grande Punto was launched bleeding was much easier, but the 500 and Ka took a step backwards to the mk2 punto coolant system design. Top tip is to raise the front of the car which helps the bleeding process a lot. Give the car a few long runs with heater on full, bleed again and keep topping up coolant as there will be more air pockets trapped.
I had to use a four pint milk bottle with the bottom cut off, some a electric tape to make it fit to the top of the coolant tank. To give me enough height in the water to bleed it on an audi A6 after i did a cambelt.
Had similar issue with a Fiat Idea . Fully charged battery with jump pack would not turn over . Turned out alternator was seized solid been laid up for few months.
Slow cranking - Fiats in this era are notorious for bad earth straps/negatively battery cables, it goes from negative terminal to chassis and towards the gearbox, and just break. Not the case here of course, just reminded me of this. Oh and it's easy to test it - jumper cable from negative terminal to engine... Cheaper than a new battery or starter
Bad engine grounds causing electrical problems can easily be identified with the same trick, some old school ingenuity trumps a scan tool every so often.
That engine had been overheated and seized, rusty water stains tell the tale. With the problems you were getting with the bleeding did you check the radiator flow which may have been the cause of the original overheating and might cause reoccurrence.
i would check all your vacuum and turbo hoses are secure and not leaking, could also be a weak solenoid next to your fuel filter where all the vacuum hoses are connected
The only good thing about these fire engines is they are a Non-interference engine if the belt ever snaps, replaced loads on the side of the road over the years lol ,nice one fella 👍
hi ya mate can i ask if you had to do anything for the correct mileage of the replacement engine to show?. going down the same road bought one with a shagged motor picked one up complete with box and everything ecu etc question is will it need coding ? and you have gained a new subscriber.

Im really surprised you didnt cut the alternator belt... and try turning the engine...I've had so many of these on my pitch with exactly the same symptoms... when they stand especially in the cold damp weather the alternators seize solid...and the fact the engine turns easier one way that the other also suggests this fault as the alternaters have a clutch on them.....

Slightly concerning as I’ve got a Fiat 500, someone I work with had similar though put a new starter on and same problem in the end it turned out the camshaft had snapped.
Looks very espensive . My brother bought a 2014 KA - one owner full history from a dealer for £3500. Not Titanium but that is pointless on a car like that. Worth £1500 at best.

i think these fiat fire engines are non interference so if belt brakes no problems at leat the older ones were. good old engine just bit head trouble .
It’s not the cars fault it’s been badly maintained is it ? You could say that about any car if a coolant pipe bursts on your car and you fire down the motorway for long enough yours will cook and seize also

why is there a mini cooper S front bumper, standard cooper front wings (NO S) and john cooper works back bumper with no S Badge and a single tailpipe instead of a JWC centre twin exhaust???? Seems like a Stinker To Me
The latest minis literally have virtually unclipping engines gearboxes clutches etc. with almost self lowering hydraulic chassis legs. I’ve seen how easily a mobile clutch technician changed a clutch on one. Surely a 1985 engine design will have terrible emissions?
By all the water staining all over the engine looks like it was cooked multiple times and run with no coolant for years the last service was probably too little too late
The EU Commission is working on new regulations according to which a car that had an engine swapped will be treated as scrap and it won't be allowed to use such car. Too bad, especially seeing that there is still so much life in a car after an engine swap.
Just fill the radiator to the top of the cap , run and bleed the engine from the vent in the hose, when no air comes out suck the excess out from the expansion part of the radiator to the correct level, Easy no big issue. Those engines are solid and easy to work on.
Alan it’s crap car made by Fiat even lights got the Fiat logo so Ford Company give up with the Fiat 500 corporation, I had Ka in 2010, 15k mls and suspension gone bow wishbones gone, you need take the bumper to change! The FIRE engines have a small oil capacity, and some oil consumption tendencies... Once the oil level is low enough it's a steep curve towards engine failure. Check the oil level and it's a great, robust engine otherwise.

Absolutely agree it overheated. Did anyone cop the nearly new thermostat? 🤔😉 It was the cleanest part of the whole lot

My brothers Panda with the 1.2 is heading to 150k without a head gasket failure used every day, still drives ok, better than you may think.
have you not got a vacuum filler for the coolant? could be a good thing to invest in to make bleeding the coolant easier great video btw!
I think, Alan, that the idea was to pronounce the name Ka as 'Car'. At least I read that somewhere sometime long ago. 😊
Waiting for old engine teardown 😉

Yes it is a good motor. Easy to work on and fix. Lack of maintenance probably.
There is a bleed screw in rad as well Alan Hope you fitted a new serpentine belt as well?
I prefer driving this over my Kuga! So much fun, reminds me of my first mini but safer and more luxurious 😎
they drive very well, the handling is also absolutely nuts.
How much for an engine swap these days? My diesel may have some rod knock sadly
Alan. Do tell us why the MK2 still looks new 13 year old KA took a dump. I deal with this 1242cc engine loads in 500’s and KA’a and the like.
Had oil change then stood for a while ? New oil reacted with old oil ? I would drop the sump and check it out.

Alan it sounds simple but your turning the engine over with the aux belt still on! Alternator/A/C compressor?

That Duratec label on the airbox 😅

The reason why the MK2 Ka has a Fiat engine in it is purely because the KA is just a Fiat 500 in a different dress.

I had a fiat panda and it was a reel pain to bleed the coolant
Have you checked the alternator isn’t seized ? I’ve seen this a few times?
theres coolant stains on the ex cover,, its been cooked..
Did you try turning it over with the serpentine belt removed, could be a sized alternator or such like...
It was still FT at the end of the video, with no aux belt in place. Look at 18:31.
