About a year or so ago I purchased an entire collection of proof sets from an older gentleman, that he had collected over the years. I got sets 1964 through 2018, all well stored over the years with nice crisp boxes. When figuring population of proof sets you also need to consider how many sets have been cracked open over the years, so the total population of intact proof sets is a whole lot lower then what was originally minted. I feel this reason alone is enough to put a few nice sets away for the future. And you also have to believe when silver prices get way out of reach of casual collectors, they may resort back to collecting clad, just a thought.
Last year when we had the first silver premium hike, I was scooping up the 2000-2006 silver proof sets. They where cheaper FV wise for the silver, than buying from the 90% bins.
Actually the 1987 set is an interesting one as the Kennedy that year was available only in Mint sets. But since Kennedys were pulled from circulation and sold only in sets after 2001, the previously low mintage of 1987 Kennedys has been lower or similar range with fewer years exceeding it.
I own a damaged 1987 Prestige Set. About 30 years ago I was backing out of the driveway and failed to have the passenger door secured. The door flew open as I backed with a tight turn, the set flew out of the open door, and I hit it. The packaging is, you could say, less than ideal...but the coins were unscathed.
That's what I bought mine for but the search for errors and varieties is so confusing to me I don't even bother with them any more,I even bought a Cherry Pickers Guide and another main guide book for searching but the pictures say it has to have this or that marker and I don't even see what they're talking about !!! AUGHHHHHH !!!!!
@timothy heick rare coins, error coins, different low mintage years, you have to buy a microscope to see the errors of the coin. Buy the Redbook large print to get you started. It'll show you all the basic prices of all coins in general.

Retired vet, and I'm looking to keep busy and hopefully supplement my income. So, this has been the answer so far. Yep, very true, I've been following eBay for years now and proof sets, coins in general are going like crazy! Error coins on seller ID GSC aka Great Southern Coins, has been getting good money for errors lately! I switched to sterling silver jewelry to invest in, it's still fairly easier to get some good deals on silver jewelry in comparison to coins!
Simple maths. I'm buying them as their silver content meant I was buying silver at or below spot. I picked up 90% State quarters at $25 for 0.9 Troy Oz when spot was $29. This was when the ASE was at $9-10 above spot. I now have 10 complete sets of the 1999-2009 90% State Quarters - all 50 States and the 6 American colonies - American Samoa, USVI, Guam etc.

@@Portal2099 commemorative coins aren't worth much and you can lose your ass on silver eagles so just be careful on what you're buying because there's a lot of fakes online.... the only way to tell is by looking at the date or by the machine that tests the coin to make sure its real silver.

As strange as this sounds these sets are heating up especially the silver era proof sets from 1950 to 1964! I've seen hype drive prices up to fall just a few years later.
Went local auction last night. Bought '70 proof $10, '72 UNC $12, & paid $26 for a '66 SMS coz the nickel jumps out at ya, and upon closer look, the dime looks cameo, and the penny is flawless. Plus picked up 4 rolls of '30's wheats for $20, and 30 teens thru 20's wheats for $10.
Thanks for keeping us up to speed on what's going on in the market...I had NO idea the market on these was improving. I'm really glad tho , they have been poo-pooed for the last fifteen / twenty years so I guess they're finally do for some cyclical love !! I get mint and proof sets because I like them . Im getting from 1955 to date and almost done with the mint sets and 1/2 done with the proof sets , inclueding silver sets.

I would think when the digital reset occurs all the paper and coin will be a thing of the past. Probably worth more in the collector's market than the current value.
I've got a nearly complete US Mint Set collection from 1959-present, only missing five sets. Once that's completed, I thought I'd move to Proof Sets. Hopefully the people buying them up wholesale don't drive my prices up.

Are you saying the collector will die out? I don't think so and whether they are paying you in fiat money such as federal reserve notes or credits there will be collectors. (Fiat money is a government-issued currency that is not backed by a commodity such as gold.) Other commodities are metals "any kind" oranges, apples, eggs, your labor, etc... is a commodity.

I am in 6 issues of Western and Eastern treasure magazine ( front cover April 2020 best finds issue ), Several years ago I dug up a 1783 Georgius Triumpho token WITHOUT the reverse Die Crack, it is one of only 5 now known without the die crack, Sold in 2008 = 10,350 Sold in 2010 = 25,300 Now I have a fifth and it is absolutely perfect condition.... Dug a foot deep here in St Augustine Florida USA. It is featured in 2016 issues of Western and Eastern treasure magazine.
If someone pays $8 then they are overpaying IMO. I buy these in large lots for around $4 ea and haven’t noticed a uptick in price. I resale them locally and people usually pay $8-$15 for them.

I have about 7000 ounces of silver all in coins because I didn't have to buy silver w/ that high premium. And all my coins have doubled to tripled in value since last year. I don't buy silver eagles anymore because they aren't worth the premium prices. I've lost money on silver eagles.
The thrill of the hunt after chasing junk silver and dumpster diving some want to have a few nicer coins and especially pre 69 are all disappeared from on-line stores.
I have a boat load of these proof sets starting with 1964 through to around 1992 then a few in the early 2000's as well. Nice to see they are finally getting some attention. Wish I didn't live in the middle of nowhere. I have no way to really have any coins graded and I cannot afford to send off coins :( So I guess they are just gonna all sit in this giant box forever or at least until I am dead.
The way I view all of these mint/proof sets is...what could I get for them if I sold them to a coin shop today? The answer is, not a lot. The coin shop would need to be able to sell them to someone else quickly and, as there is no precious metal content, melt value would be too low for the coin dealer to have base metal coins melted down.
I guess I'm ahead of the curve... ive been buying these for a while, just making a stockpile... I focus on the sealed shipping boxes unopened that contain 5 sets each... that way you know no one has cherried them... my main thought was that esp those '80s lincolns... man if you hit one that will grade 70... thats like a 200$ coin... the jeffs too... its a good investment.... long term... I mean I think that if you wait 20 years... u can cherry pick them send in the possible 70s and varieties and by then (20 yrs out) u will be able to sell the ones u don't want for at least 8$ , when you paid 5... not bad after you get your submission back...

A while ago you posted a video where you said that you might as well sell off your proof sets at face value. You can look up my comment. I said something to the effect that you cannot predict the future, and to hold off selling your proof sets. Growing up my father collected baseball cards and 5-10 years ago journalists were publishing articles effectively telling people to go recycle their cards. Beginning around 2016 I started to buy junk electronics on eBay for repair. All three are way in the money. Back then you could buy a busted 3DS for $35, fix it, and maybe make $20 selling it. Now broken 3DSes are selling for $55, and prices for working units go up from there. I never collected baseball cards but I will make considerable money on those repaired electronics. Point being is you just can't predict the future. Who thought baseball cards would come back? Broadly speaking, invest your wealth in as broad an array of assets as possible, thus you have the potential of increasing or at least preserving wealth regardless of current events.

The only proof set I have is the 1979 that my parents gave me. It's not going anywhere.

2 to 3 months ago I was buying up Canadian Proof Like silver sets for average $25 , ebay prices now $45-50 this is madness
And they're going up every week. I have proof sets that I paid $25 and now they're going for $375 & up to $1,000

I just grabbed a 61,62,63,64 mint sets for 35 last week. It was christmas to me. Lol

Littleton is selling the 1966 & 67 SMS for $33.50. Last month I got them for $6.50. Each.
In comics recent issues, if key, can hit over $100 within weeks at the moment.

Remember take a look at your 1973 Ikes mintage in your red book very low mintage and there are some beautiful MS graded ones ready to pluck.

I bought several of each. Unfortunately, so did a lot of other people. They didn’t appreciate in value.

A while ago you posted a video where you said that you might as well sell off your proof sets at face value. You can look up my comment. I said something to the effect that you cannot predict the future, and to hold off selling your proof sets. Growing up my father collected baseball cards and 5-10 years ago journalists were publishing articles effectively telling people to go recycle their cards. Beginning around 2016 I started to buy junk electronics on eBay for repair. All three are way in the money. Back then you could buy a busted 3DS for $35, fix it, and maybe make $20 selling it. Now broken 3DSes are selling for $55, and prices for working units go up from there. I never collected baseball cards but I will make considerable money on those repaired electronics. Point being is you just can't predict the future. Who thought baseball cards would come back? Broadly speaking, invest your wealth in as broad an array of assets as possible, thus you have the potential of increasing or at least preserving wealth regardless of current events.
sold a bitcoin and bought like 1000 ike proofs set and couple morgans dollars ungraded.
broken open all damaged holders and over scratch cases slabbed em in card board holders. filled a cigar box just love checking em out
