@Matthew Pawlak Actually, the majority of the time, it does work that way. Consider the crap that officers see time and again, and that despite the portrayal by the news, they actually bring in the majority of their suspects alive and relatively unharmed.
The Captain's death was just one of those things that leaves the audience gobsmacked. The fact that we all felt sad for a character we barley knew for one season just goes to show how well the story was developed.
When Sarge told Nolan to arrest Cole, it was a powerful moment. It showed how much he’s come to respect and trust Nolan as an officer and how much he cares about those under his command. He knew the guilt Nolan was feeling over Andersen’s death and he knew the only way Nolan would ever be able to get past it is to be the one who brought her killer to justice. Sgt. Grey is a great cop and Nolan, with Grey’s help, will one day be a great cop, himself.
actually I tend to think hat because Nolan was the captain's patrol partner for that day, that's why Sgt. Gray had him do it, that and to help him close the loop,
That's a great way of putting it. And here I thought the Sarge wanted Nolan to make the arrest because he was expecting a rookie to be trigger happy and kill the SOB. Lol!
Nolan's face when walking up to arrest him made me think back to when Captain Anderson told Nolan "It is not your job to punish that man for what he did." "Overcoming that impulse will be the hardest thing you will do in this job." You could clearly see in his face, the rage and the hate, he, just like everyone else there, wanted nothing more than to put a bullet in that man and make him pay for what he did, but they knew that wouldn't honor her memory just like Grey said, doing their jobs would. "Because the woman you killed taught us, its not our job to punish you, just to see to it that you are." What a beautiful line.
@JitzyJT what kind of asshole days that? Cops die in the line of duty all the time and some prick like you has the audacity to put someone down like that?

And in a moment of growth, I love how Grey is the one to tell him that it was Andersen who got Nolan the job at Mid-Shire because she believed that his life experience as an older rookie would be valuable to the department. In other words, Andersen believed in Nolan despite him being older than most rookies and the concerns of other higher ups like Grey himself. I can tell you. Never before did I feel 3 episodes in that a show was so well made. The Rookie is as hilarious as Brooklyn 99 and as serious as Swat. Anderson's death was a shock to me. My only regret is we didn't see the funeral.
It’s not our job to punish you. Just to make sure you are. I love that line because it spells out the exact purpose of the police their job is to catch you the court punishes you that is how the system is supposed to work even though it has its challenges and sometimes doesn’t work but hopefully one day it will
This scene made me emotional it was only right Nolan got to do it since he saw his captain get killed in front of him this was a good way to get closure.
This scene was SO well done. You can feel the emotion. And even if you've never watched the Rookie before, have no idea who Andersen is, none of that, you can tell how meaningful this arrest is. Supremely well written
0:54 Nolan was blaming himself for Captain Anderson's death. Bishop comforting him that it wasn't his fault and that she died doing her job to protect Nolan made me cry
The way the camera pans to see the reactions of each of the rookies and their respective training officers. It really shows the development of the rookies even just in one season and the nerves Nolan is obviously feeling as he was the one who was with Captain Anderson as she died and now him being the one to arrest Midas. Truly an amazing show❤❤❤❤😢😢
He would need to jump past lieutenant first in order to become captain. The reason he's a sergeant at his age is he chose the police version of the NCO path. Watch commander is the highest position he can achieve as a sergeant.
@@TheScienceman300 I am very happy about that. I am a little upset they're moving the show to Sunday nights because nobody will stay up on Sunday night because Monday is the worst day of the week so fully rested, but I hope it lasts at least 8 seasons.

For those who haven’t seen the episode and need some context for this scene: Cole is a criminal that was wanted by the entire police force for eating the last donut in the station.
The best line was from nolan "It's not our job to punish you just to see it that you are. One the best lines I heard from the rookie doing a good work on this show. Keep up the good work
Loving the show and I really hope it gets picked up for a 2nd season it's refreshing to see some good TV especially when it's a crime drama that's realistic don't get me wrong I loved castle but I hope rookie has a long run
One of the few time this show reminded me this is just a show. I know a lot of cops, this would never happen. If that criminal killed a cop, especially a house captain, his life would be over.
i could genuinely watch this show forever. how satisfying would it be to one day see Nolan become a Sargent and Watch Commander, taking over from Grey?
Just something in the Reflex sight of Lopez's rifle. For those who remember Independence Day there's a scene in the Oval Officer where the two officers come in and show a image of the mothership with the smaller ships breaking off, it looks exactly like the red image in the sight at time index 2:00.

I feel like this should have been in a separate episode. The Greenlight episode should have been split in half: the first covering the green light and Anderson's death, and the second focusing on a massive manhunt for Cole Midas while the characters mourn Anderson. Making the episode like this makes it feel condensed.
This was a very good episode, including officers following protocol, while also showing their emotions and love for their captain verses keeping them inside which some officers do resulting unfortunately in PTSD for example. Albeit some episodes do not accurately reflect at least in Canada the large amount of personal discretion and judgement that individual officers have on whether they charge a person or not. I have seen two episodes in which officers charged people, as someone made a complaint. Officers use their own discretion as to whether a charge is warranted. As well ultimately it is up to Crown Counsel in Canada whom determines whether a charge is laid. An example my friend works in the RCMP, she during several incidences she was called to used her very good de escalation skills to mitigate domestic disputes often returning to see how everyone is doing. When people are really emotional they can say or make up all kinds of things, including that they wish someone to be charged. She wishes to add to the quality of people's lives and relationships, verses ad litigation and court stress. As well with small item impulse shoplifting some people do so for attention thus she talks with them to see how they are doing; is genuine and kind. They don't re offend, as they just wanted some care and attention often many have middle class jobs ect... She has told me lots of these kinds of stories with confidentiality of course.
I hope we see a new captain enter the rookie in season 6. After Andersens death by the southern front, and capt. Tom Weatherbys set up promotion by Sgt. Grey with the intention of getting him away from Mid-Wilshire Station, us fans have not seen an LAPD captain since. There was a reference to a "Captain Maudox" in the episode of Greys shooting, and another reference to a captiain when Nolans son is taken into hospital, but no Capt. has been seen on screen since Weatherby. Shame, I liked Andersens character so I wanted their to be a proper replacement. In terms of season 6, introducing an LAPD captain would be a great opportunity to introduce a new character. Cmon Rookie Universe, at the very least give us a reference to Andersen, she was a well loved character by us fans. 👍
the rookie is my favorite show in the entire world and I'm so sad the way she died I cried so much I saw her die that's all Pat Nolan it's sad that it wasn't right rest in peace captain
I don't think it was a test. Grey knew that Nolan needed this. He needed to assuage his guilt to any extent possible, because Grey knew that if Nolan didn't, it would probably eat him alive. Also, I think Grey did it to show that he accepts Nolan now, because when Nolan first arrived, Grey was very antagonistic towards him. But these are just my opinions.

Not gonna lie, there would be a lot of crossfire here if stuff went South.
Yeah I was thinking that.
If you wanna see a lot of crossfire, you should watch the movie patriots day

I'm currently watching this show for the first time and this was by far my favorite episode so far. One of my favorite episodes of any show I've seen in fact. So well done.
I can tell you. Never before did I feel 3 episodes in that a show was so well made. The Rookie is as hilarious as Brooklyn 99 and as serious as Swat. Anderson's death was a shock to me. My only regret is we didn't see the funeral.
Nah its Lucifer without the supernatural stuff.😁

Bishop?
He did a great job in Castle. Was very happy when I learnt he's gonna be on this show.
It’s not our job to punish you. Just to make sure you are. I love that line because it spells out the exact purpose of the police their job is to catch you the court punishes you that is how the system is supposed to work even though it has its challenges and sometimes doesn’t work but hopefully one day it will
It’s better to have someone suffer than to have them take the easy way out
Please renew the best show ever
The Village got renewed and I'm ecstatic
This scene made me emotional it was only right Nolan got to do it since he saw his captain get killed in front of him this was a good way to get closure.
Man my mom was cutting some onions when she passed. I will miss her.
He is guilty
I love how Bishop calmed Nolan down.
Good thing she'll be on the Rookie for many years to come....

The way the camera pans to see the reactions of each of the rookies and their respective training officers. It really shows the development of the rookies even just in one season and the nerves Nolan is obviously feeling as he was the one who was with Captain Anderson as she died and now him being the one to arrest Midas. Truly an amazing show❤❤❤❤😢😢
I predict by season 2 that Grey becomes the new captain, and Tim becomes the new sergeant.

Bishop: It shouldn't be him.
Grey: No, it needs to be.
I have always loved Nathan Fillion as an actor. You can see the emotion on his face at any point when he's acting. I will always love this show too even though it has some of the worst political trash messages put a TV show that I've seen in awhile. Nathan Fillion is and will always be Captain Reynolds of the serenity to me.
Hes also a fantastic person, was lucky enough to meet him in person and he was very kind and polite.
@billdover3165 Okay little missy.
What a very powerful scene, and it tells us the right thing to do in the end.
For those who haven’t seen the episode and need some context for this scene: Cole is a criminal that was wanted by the entire police force for eating the last donut in the station.
As for the donut. They had named it Anderson and Nolan was forced to watch Cole eat it.
My God... this isn't even barbary anymore.
Hey ABC, good on you for not putting an annoying end bumper on this video with loud music.
A powerful scene! I hope the give this show at least another season. It is done so well.
Nolan shaking was actually sad, he had to see her die and couldn’t help her
Damn Captain Anderson 😭😭😭
Grey is not just a superior officer, he is like a Father to his subordinates
what song did that tone come from at 4:08
I've been trying to find it for hours. The only thing i came up with is that it was created by Jordan Gagne

Outstanding work by actors betraying a range of emotions.
Elliott Rodgers you mean portraying? Or do you mean they let down a range of emotions
Just something in the Reflex sight of Lopez's rifle.

Let it sink in that Nolan is played by the SAME guy who voiced Buck from Halo. Only in this series, HE is The Rookie!
I feel like this should have been in a separate episode. The Greenlight episode should have been split in half: the first covering the green light and Anderson's death, and the second focusing on a massive manhunt for Cole Midas while the characters mourn Anderson. Making the episode like this makes it feel condensed.
I thought the same
The look on Nolan's face when he's walking toward the murderer... Yeah I'd think hard about running.
4:20 theres a car near curve of mountain
I wonder if 'Cole Midas' was an intentional joke name, where instead of gold everything he touches turns to cole.
Still conflicted by grey doing this one the "right" way but grey struggling with arresting jacksons killer the right way
I hope we see a new captain enter the rookie in season 6. 👍
Not gonna lie, Nolan’s a better man than me. If it were me, I would have seen a gun the moment the car door opened
the rookie is my favorite show in the entire world and I'm so sad the way she died I cried so much I saw her die that's all Pat Nolan it's sad that it wasn't right rest in peace captain

Great show! Powerful episode!
This show is so good!
Just got done watching Season 1. She was a great Captain and loved her on the show.
Atleast Nolan got his revenge for him killing Captain Anderson
Nice test by Grey. To see whether Nolan could perservere or let his emotions take over.
@@cdubbau135 Maybe a mix of both
