Japan has perfect underdog story in this WC. beating host and defending champion Germany, comeback again sweden in semifinal and beat the strongest team U.S.A via penalty in the FINAL. their's story would make great documentary film.
Japan and Germany both, show much sportsmanship, but the Japanese never, ever dive, and rarely make really ugly challenges. They are absolutely pure class.
This is why soccer is a great sports. Regardless of your height or your body mass, your technical skills is all you need to win a game. Japanese ladies are the shortest and smallest in this tournament but they brought down the mighty giants like, Germany, Swedish and elegant USA which could never happen in basket ball game, American football or baseball games. Even volley ball needs some height advantage.
You forgot one aspect though. The set piece in penalty area, either from corner kick or elsewhere. Height really gives advantage to tall players with strong upper body and high jump. This is the area where the Japanese team or any Asian teams lacking and always try to avoid in a game. USWNT team scored many goals from these set pieces and endup beating the Nadeshiko. Nevertheless, I always favorite Nadeshiko in any games including against the USWNT. They play the purist and beautiful form of football in my opinion. Just fun to watch them playing and always remind me of how beautiful football is.
spangari That is true. There are individual positions / situations where height and build give you an advantage. I think, compared to most other sports, though, soccer is far more lenient on height requirements for competitive play. It's one of the few sports I can think of where being short and compact is sometimes even an advantage.
Honestly, height advantage had nothing to do with soccer. Corner kicks as you guys mentioned is unpredictable, any height can score from it depends on your position, location and your opponent defensive ability. Japanese women still disproves this claim because their second goal in the final of that 2011 WWC came through heading inside their opponent eighteen yard box in front of the taller USWNT players. All the nation they beat to reach the finals were way taller than them and those nations had many corner kicks but unable convert one goal through corner kicks.
Maruyama's goal was beautiful, technically perfect and elegant, with a beautiful pass from none other than Sawa. Without Maruyama, there would not have been a championship for Nadeshiko. This Japanese team was and is, deservedly legendary, Sawa & Miyama two genuinely great players. Sawa at that moment, none better. The Americans were lauded for talent, however, every player on the Japanese team was gifted and among the best in the world. With little financial support, a truly amateur team and perhaps the last genuinely amateur team in the WC or Olympics. Many of the players went to practice after working all day at menial jobs. Sawa one of the finest players in the world, ever. And duly recognized so, as FIFA player of the year in 2011. She was 32 years old. They were fantastic and at their peak in 2011.
Espicially the German goalie keeper diving in not net zone was more elegant:)I am glad Japan won after the tsunami etc but Germany let Japan win my friend, let's admit it.
The height advantage the Germans have over the Japanese was ridiculous. A true David vs. Goliath achievement for Japan. Then they go and beat Sweden and then the US on penalty kicks. They sure didn't have it easy!
this isn't basketball mate. Look at Messi and Maradona, acceleration is as important as peek velocity in football and shorter people are better at that
@@sergiodelrioreyes7655 "Look at Messi and Maradona" -- Dude, you just named two of the best football players to ever live. Acceleration and pace sure is important but height is a huge advantage. Read the science on longer legs too and such lol
Both are playing even when winning, instead of closing the game. Which lead Japanese to lose against Belgian in 2018. But both are very technical and nice to watch. The women were amazing in France, too bad they didn't score earlier against Netherlands, it would have been a more interesting finale against USA.
Despite their loss and win in any Fifa games, Germans has class. They accept their defeat with class and when they win, they don't rub it in. Same goes with Japan. From US!
This goal is still my favorite so far at the end of 2015. Every time I watch this highlight with tear in my eyes although I'm not Japanese. 2015wwc was disappointed, not only the final but also narrow wins against (all) relatively weak teams. I hope they'll come back in Rio 16 despite the fact that Sawa will have retired.
Sawa's goal in extra time against the USA gets a lot of press, and rightly so. But, Maruyama's goal against Germany is what allowed Sawa's goal to happen in the first place.

Maruyama said… 「Normally I would have shot it to the near side. I didn't think I could twist my hips like that. But when Sawa-san gave me the ball, I could see the light in the goal, and I shot with that image, and it was decided. I never felt that feeling again until I retired.」
The women's game these days reminds me of the men's game of 40 years ago, when it was truly the beautiful game. Like with most team sports these past 20 years, the athleticism (how much is doping??) in the men's game has made real technically skilled teams rare. Why do so many people love Barcelona/Spain?? Because they play the beautiful game. I love watching Spain play against a team of 6' 3" muscle bound thoroughbreds, and just dizzy them into defeat.
A stunning upsets, Japan upsets host country, 2 times the WC champion, 1-0. Japan doesn't have the height that the Germans have, but they have the speed, and strong legs. Despite some great chances, the Germans couldn't capitalize.
This was a bigger upset than the final against the US. Nobody, absolutely nobody, thought Japan had a chance against Germany in Germany. It's what makes sports great.
charles king you are very correct and very funny....is not about height or weight but techniques,skills...it really was a strong match tho...i think the japanese deserve the glory..

Just the pass and finish alone in this game was a show of quality. Not burst your bubble but height, mass, and physique all makes a difference
Jacob Maynard There is no common build in soccer, even at the professional level. There is a reason for this.
