Thanks so much for the specs, Steve! Absolutely no need to make the Rivera heavier / more cushioned. Altra has the Torin for that. IMO, it was totally fine where it was in the Altra lineup - right between the Escalante and the Torin. The actual problem that messes up the lineup is that the Escalante has become so heavy despite its low stack.
I spoke with the fine people from Altra and told them they really need a more minimal and lighter shoe. Something less than an Escalante. Does not sound like that is in any plans from Altra anytime soon sadly. Seems like a no-brainer to me though.
Thank you so much for the feedback. That's what we're striving for. We don't want to waste your time and we want to get you the info you need to make an educated decision. See you next time!
Glad to hear it! This is a great update but just be aware, this shoe is very neutral so if you went to a Provision for stability, just know this shoe has no additional structure to it.
@@RunMoore I’m not using the Provision for stability so no problem there. I recently started walking and running in minimal shoes. I’m now using the Escalante racers and Xero HFS, and Vivobarefoot Primus Lite III.
Hi Steve! Thanks for great review 😊 I got Rivera 2, and in my honest opinion these are almost perfect. It's really enjoyable shoes. Last October I've used them for marathon. And they did good job. Right now I'm really concerned about that shallow design you've said about. Rivera's 2 fitted me perfectly. But there is one thing that, I probably would change, and Altra did already in Rivera's 3 is that stack hight. This could be a game changer for those who like to do longer milage and stay with Rivera and not going for Torins. Keep up whit your great work Steve!
Thanks for watching! This is definitely a shallower heel than some other models but I do not think it is any shallower than any previous Rivera. Really, I found the whole fit from size to depth to be the best Rivera to date. We got our shipment of Rivera's in last week so the staff here all got to try them out. Everyone really likes them and they all fit pretty darn true to size. I think this is a great update in the areas that this shoe needed to be updated.
i would love to see Altra build a shoe utilizing their anatomic food bed with a low stack height for better ground feel and create an upper similar to Asisc kiko design lab, New balance 1906d colabs, or the Salomon xt6 colour ways
Loved v1, not a fan of v2. I think I changed. Found the Escalante racer and felt like the rivera was a poor version of the racer. I like the concept of v3 but I think at that point I'll just get the updated torin 😊
Thanks for making this video!! I’ve been running in Torins for years but with the changes/problems in the 5 and 6 versions, I’ve been struggling to find another Wide toe box, zero drop daily trainer. This episode has really helped me decide which Altra model to try!!
What other 0-4mm shoes are there with a fair amount of padding on the sole ? Something for recovery and healing from injury? In Otherwords something that feels soft ? Or which would be your top pick?
Happy New Year, Steve. And another great video. If I was looking for a more cushioned shoe than my usual Escalante, but I have a high arch and quite a narrow foot but need that toe box width, would a Torin be a better choice than the Rivera, or would the increase in stack make me feel too “high”? Thank you
I think you would be better off in a Torin than a Rivera. While the new stack height on the Rivera 3 sounds like it would be right in your wheelhouse, I think the Torin might be the better option. It's a very low-profile max cushion shoe. Plus, it's a good bit wider than the Rivera. That would be quite a change in width from an Escalante to the Rivera, the Torin is right between those two in width. I also actually like the Torin better for a higher arch. I hope that helps!
Which Altra would be best for higher arches? I have a high instep and all of my weight shifts on to the balls and outer side of my forefoot. That causes calluses so bad. I’m thinking a zero drop shoe would be best? I see above that you recommended a high arch support shoe for someone with flat feet so now I’m really clueless in which type of shoe I should be getting. I was always thinking one labeled as high arch would be best?
Would this shoe wouldn’t it lineup kind of with the Hoka Rincon they’re both semi fast just booked mostly kind of lighter maybe not I’m more of a minimal runner but I’ll admit when I try on the for trails the temp five I said God that’s the most comfortable shoe I ever put on and it reminded me of this, so that’s why I was kinda I just tried it down a little while ago thinking about it having some specialsso made me think that I went back on for this shoe. I had the model two would like to find another one like new. It was a great shoe so comfortable great video just make a comment.
I used to run in Torins before they switched the line to being only the plush version, or whatever they called it. So I picked up a Rivera V2 and it felt like the older Torin, but it felt like it ran very small. Glad to hear they fixed that. Does this model still feel like the older Torins?
So this new version will be closer to like a Torin 4. It's going to be more cushioned than V2 but not as plush as like the Torin Plush. Thanks for watching and for the question.
Torin 4 was my favorite shoe from altra and I’ve been chasing that since they made the switch. Sounds like I’ll give the Rivera 3 a try. Thanks for the reply!
Good grief. I have to vent. First. Love your reviews, thanks. Second. Fan of Altras and use them exclusively. (Credit them with helping me break the PF cycle I was in.) The Rivera 2's were such a wonderful Cinderella Shoe! Lighter than the Escalante but more comfortable as well! Now they are going to go the same way as my previous favorites the Torin 4's (26mm) made big and clumpy 28mm then 30mm. Why? Why?
Thanks for watching and I like to think the fine folks from Altra read these comments too. Honestly, I think they were just hoping to have a more clear line to go head-to-head with other models. "You wear a ghost? Try a Rivera. Do you like a Bondi? Here is a Via." The Rivera was sort of lost in the middle and I get the feeling that not a ton of retail stores carried the Rivera because of it. This was a chance to totally change the shoe with the hopes it would get pulled more often and placed in more stores. A Cinderella shoe is great and I get the frustration but it's better than it dying due to lackluster sales (like the Viho or Kayenta). I can only speak for my store but the Rivera is the least popular Altra model we stock, and we stock like every Altra. We have the Rivera 3 in stock now and we have been pulling it with more frequency than the previous one because it can go head-to-head with other brands' mid-cushion neutral shoe in a fairer matchup.
We try recommending shoes that have higher arch profiles and some added medial support for people who have flat feet. Flatter feet usually cause overpronation and stability helps support the falling arches.
Nice! I was lucky enough to win a pair of the original Rivera from a local running store. I haven't put a ton of miles in it but I found it enjoyable. I definitely lean toward the wider Altras but this "slim fit" design was not a problem for me. I put a pair of Lock Laces in it for easy slip on and off. Lately I've just been using it as my casual all around shoe.
These rivera 3 are the first altra shoes to give me a blister. Bloody blister on the heel after a few miles walk. Shoe is too cushy now, a little more guided, tighter in the heel and slightly tighter wrapping the whole foot. Also hotter a little. My last Rivera’s
I'm sorry to hear about your discomfort with the new Rivera 3. You could try the marathon loop to get a more secure heel lock. This model has been hit or miss with customers with how the upper is, and the added cushion has created a feel of some hot spots. Altra needs to bring in a shoe that is at least slightly below the cushioning level of the Escalante.
@@RunMoore I would love a less cushioned than escalate shoes that don’t look like escalate racers. Everything gets more cushioned and guided, even successful models change over time towards that. Thank you for your reviews by the way!
Hey Steve. Do you guys carry any Topo Athletic shoes at the store? If not, check some of them out! I just got a pair of the ST-4 zero drop shoe 16mm drop. They are pretty nice alternative compared to Altra's models. Just wanted to put them on your radar if you have not heard of them. Thank you! Love your videos!

@@RunMoore Thumbs down on Altra. Thumbs up to you. Thank you for putting in the word.
The Rivera is a slim fit shoe with no other options. That's why it came in. The Torin doesn't have the slim fit option
Like for Run Moore from Spain. Thanks for this information about Altra. A nice day for everyone.

Good stuff. Thanks for watching.
Hi Steve. I purchased the Altra Provision 6 based on a review you did earlier and I love it! Maybe I’ll try this one, not sure yet.

That colorway!
Its pretty, isn't it. I'm hoping they do the same for the Vanish!
Hey Steve I see the the River as on sale on your website. If I normally wear a 9.5 in other altras should I order a 10 because it’s narrower?
If you need the extra width, then we would recommend going a half size up. The Rivera is noticeably narrower compared to other Altra models.
I like black color! Do you have information about color variation?
We should have all color variations with different views on our online store! shop.letsrunmoore.com/product/2129222/altra/m-rivera-3
Altra has gone back to the sizes running smaller for some reason, I hope they got it right with this shoe.
The upper is less breathable than version 2? In version 2 you could see light passing through the mesh.
