Went from Hoka to Altra. Glad I did. I have funky wide ass big feet and the Altras have saved my feet, and legs. Working in surgery I'm walking, and standing all day, not any problems in Altras.
Fortunately, I still have three brand new pairs of different Escalantes in my closet. Wide toebox is why I keep buying Altra shoes. Original fit is the way to go, Golden!
@@whlewis9164I heard the 3s are narrower than the 2s and newer Escalante 4, would you say the toebox in the 3s serves you well? Looking into Altra to begin with because I want room for toes to spread after wearing adidas my whole life

Thanks for this video! I wasn't aware that Altra made wide models and it paid off in spades today. I was out shopping for some "Original" fit Altras for my new job and when the sales person said that he didn't think that a wide option was offered I referred to this video. He was kind enough to go look around the back room and found that they did in fact have the wide version. Interestingly, I normally wear a 10.5 US but I found that the 11 US was a better fit. As it turned out, I needed shoes that are wide in the midfoot area. I've been wearing minimalist shoes and boots for about 15 years now and the Lone Peak 7 wide is the only shoe I've come across that fits my weird ass feet. It's wonderful to finally find a normal-ish shoe that I can wear comfortably. Thanks again for the info!
Love the content! I agree. ALTRA! please more original fits! Make Torin Great AGAIN! I wish soooo badly that I would have bought 6 pairs of the Torin 4.5 plush. My favorite show by far! if you have any in a size 10 in a dark corner of the store hit me up!
The Torin 4.5 Plush was one of our favorites here at the store. Unfortunately, we have got nothing left of that shoe. We do have high expectations for the new Torin 7. After having seen that shoe in person, we think it is a substantial upgrade from the previous two Torin 5 and Torin 6 models.
The old Torin 4.5 was one of our favorites. We, unfortunately, have none left at our store. On the bright side, the new Torin 7 is looking really good compared to the older versions. It is one of our most anticipated shoes in the upcoming season.
Thanks for the summary on all these models. I just bought my first Altras (Lone Peak 7) from a local store (Trak Shak in Birmingham, AL) and I really like them. I think next time I may go with the Superior just to see the difference. I just wish more companies made zero drop shoes and anatomical shaped toe boxes like Altra. I think they are somewhat unique in the market by offering these features but still having a conventional cushioned sole.
Glad my video could help clarify the differences between Altra's shoe models. While some other brands have the foot-shaped toebox and zero drop, the ones we have seen are all designed to be barefoot shoes with minimal to no cushioning. Altra is one of our store's favorite and best-selling brands. Lots of people come in looking for Hokas or Brooks, then end up leaving with a pair of Altras because they like the unique features.
@@RunMoore I'm considering Topo but haven't got a pair yet. Altras are changing, I have several old pairs that are trashed but I can't bring myself to throw them out because they are so damn perfect and have been from day one. Yes need more original! And why offer wide options to the two widest models? So silly. Thanks for the great explanation, I was so confused after the Olympus felt narrow compared to the lone peaks.
Good info in this video. Thank you so much for this video. Saved me ££ buying Timp as next shoe to my LP. But as I love my Escalante 1 and 1.5 and my LP I now see why I quickly fell out of love with the Torin6 and found it tight. I wish Altra would keep more original fits across the board.
I bought a pair of altra for medical reasons, wide shoe base, flat top . It erased the pain of my toe. I need to control my diet as well, less salt and sugar
I wish you commented on the length for all the shoes shown here. It would have provided a solid reference point for viewers who have experience with one of them. My first Altra shoe was Lone Peak 7. I had it in US9 and it fitted me fine (just a little too wide). But for Vanish Tempo, I had to go up to US9.5 to get the same length.
Great breakdown and overview. Couldn't agree more about on your statement wishing more offerings in the Original foot width. I really like the Altra brand and I really hope they hear you and give us more options. Thanks for you work and opinions.
As a 4E with boxy feet that extra width in the midfoot is something I am always on the hunt for! You have just helped me out. I will be trying out some Altra shoes. I know they are a 2E but half size up and a wide toe box means I should be okay.
Glad to hear we could help you out. Altra also has a couple models available in a wide, which would fit similarly to a 4E. The specific models that are available in a wide are the Torin, Paradigm, and Lone Peak. Let us know what you think about Altra once you try them!
Great rundown. Torin 7 out now. Torin 7 Wide, Lone Peak Wide, and Via Olympus only shoes capable of fitting really wide feet, but thankful I have even those options.
Wow! Nicely explained! Thank-you! I've been using the Olympus 4 for a while now and it's just one of the best fitting and feeling shoes for hiking I've ever owned. However, the newer models have gotten quite a price hike. So, I'm wondering which Topo model you would say is the closest to the Olympus 4s. I was going to check into the Terraventure and the Traverse models to see how I liked the fit. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
I have been. Wearing altra for 4 years and yes the original footshape is my favorite part of the shoes so when they are making it harder for me to find multiple styles that fit
“I wish they had more shoes in original fit because it’s original.” Oof. Also bummed to hear the Escalante Racer is leaving. To me, that shoe had the best ground feel. That and the Torin 4… Great vid. Thanks!

Thank you very much for the information! Both me and my daughter have wide toe splay and it was not easy to find the shoes fit right. I recently got a pair of Escalante and finally feel I go enough room for my toes! Now my daughter is big enough to wear women’s shoes so I’m trying to figure out which model for her to try. She Tried Torin, said the toe box was good but mid foot was too tight. I guess she might need a wider model.
I’m “Moore” confused now 😂 Olympus, Timp 4 and Torin 6 all in the same size and whilst they fit different they are all very useable, at least for me. I was staying away from the slim models, particularly the intriguing Outroad, but might have to pick up a pair as you consider them wider than the Timps which I love. Thanks for the video!
Super useful overview! Also appreciate your mentioning arch support. I don’t like arch support, and it’s helpful to have you point out models with less.
This was a very helpful video. I have one pair of old Altra Paradigm 4.5, and want to buy some other Altra shoes. So this video was very helpful. Now I know what Altra models to look for. The strange thing is that nobody are making shoes for flat feet. Even though a huge percentage of us have just very flat feet, like Donald Duck. There is only 1 shoe I have had that have been wide enough in the midfoot, and that was a wide model of Hoka Bondi (I think it was version 6). I really like my old Altra Paradigm. It is super soft and comfortable. The toe box is so great, really feels like wow compared to other shoes (I wonder why they other brands shape the toe box opposite of the actual shape of the foot?). Anyway, the old Paradigm is great, but too narrow in the midfoot (like most other shoes) for us with Duck feet.
Really honest and helpful! Always wore Paradigm (2.5 and 3), with an arthritis-swollen big toe knuckle and flippers for feet! But looking at this, the Via Olympus looks like a winner for me... X
I'm a "walker" with wide feet. I have the Lone Peak 7s... looking to add another pair of Altra's. I require the "Original Style" which I believe is only available in Lone Peak and Olympus. Question: I also have flat feet and have custom orthodics. I require a shoe that doesn't have orthodic support that would conflict with my custom orthodics. The Lone Peak are great. Do the Olympus have more orthodic support than the Lone Peak? Thanks, loved your evaluation video!!!
Coming off the Lone Peak 2.5 in size 15. I’m on pair #3 I’ve returned that don’t fit in size 15: Olympus Torin 5 Superior 5 Altra has no customer service to point me in the right direction.
12 in lone peak 7s and Provision 7s. I got a pare of Timp 4s recently and really felt like the 12s were small in the shop so then got some 12 1/2s. After a long 24 mile run I decided they are too big. I’m hesitant to go back to the 12s though. Separate note: I love the build quality of Altras trail shoes and as much as I love the fit of my provisions the build quality just isn’t there compared to my Cliftons which they replaced.
Great profile, Steve. Couldn't agree more on desiring more original fit shoes. That's why I was so excited with the Via Olympus coming out and subsequently disappointed because I found the Paradigm 6 to be more cushioned. The Torin 7 is going to make this even more confusing going up to the same stack at the Paradigm 6/7. I love both of them but am wondering since I'm a neutral fit if just a straight T7 is going to be both my trainer and racer (Vanish is way too narrow for me 2E).
Thank you so much! Here at Run Moore, we are also very excited about the forthcoming Torin 7. We can not wait to carry this shoe and anticipate that it will be a very well-received model.
Thanks for the video. It's helped somewhat. My situation is that i went through many pairs of Lone Peak 5s, then i didn't hike for 2 years (pregnancy and young baby). I lived most of those 2 years in Torin 4s every day. Now I'm interested to try the Olympus for hiking. But i have no idea if i can use the same size as my Lone Peak 5 (US 11 mens). Some have suggested i need to go up half a size. There aren't bricks and mortar stores near me.
Kind of the type of video I was looking for because the LP and especially Timp 4 fit me great and was looking for a comparable fit to the Timp 4. Though at first the Timp 4 did naturally feel tighter than the LP. However, interestingly I found the Mont Blanc way tighter than the Timp 4, pretty much squeezing my foot and I think it had to do with the inner. But I guess everyone does experience a shoe slightly different...
Why didn't you categorize the escalante racer? I believe they are original fit. My favorites! And why did you say they stopped them? They still are for sale, even on official website
@@RunMoore ok, good luck then for new "effective managers"... many other brands who make 2 E/4E.. but initially we come for Altra for generous toebox, i dont need my shoes to be wide everywhere.... i simply skip, i hope many other customers will do same ..lol
@@RunMoore I agree about the paradigm. It's my all time favourite and i use it mostly for casual wear. I wish they had it in wide and i wish they did neutral colours for women
Not a runner (obese in fact) but I like your reviews. Love your take on this line. Trying a discounted/returned pair of Altra Torin 6s to dip my toe in the Altra waters-coming from Hokas for everyday wear when wearing athletic shoes (90% of the time in duty boots or hiking boots though.) I'm a 11.5 -12.0 and BARELY a wide on a Brannock Device, but due to having high instep, high arch, and being just plain obese, I can never wear regular sizes in anything (except Crocs and Keen sandals) and have to go wide. Do you think the Via Olympus might naturally be wide enough for me, or should I wait on a wide version? Thanks!
I think the Via should be plenty wide. It definitely has more depth and width than the Torin. The Via really fits like a 4E width and it has more instep height than any Altra out there. I think a standard Via would work fine. Good luck!
outroad. it should have been intuition atr (instinct was wide enough to be cat as og for sure, i worn int as a male and even that was wider and much more lux and lax feeling than the torin male which felt/still feels like a race shoe lol)
I need the extra width…I have a bunion on my right foot and tried the paradigm 6 but it was too narrow on that foot unfortunately. I agree with you they need a paradigm wide. I also tried the Torin 6 which was a disaster for me, the tongue gave me a nasty cut on my ankle and the heel was rubbing too. I have plantar fasciitis on my left foot so that’s why I’m interested in the Altras. Which one given all that would you recommend for me? Thank you!
I'm a 65 year old male. Wide feet. I loved the Altra Lone Peak 6 - did the 500 miles of the Camino de Santiago, along with maybe 100 miles before hiking near Medellin Colombia and I continue to use them now 5-6 weeks after the Camino. I DO have some foot fatigue, like just nerve pain after hiking 15 miles or more in a day. I wondered about going to the Olympus for more padding OR - since I love the shape and feel of the Lone Peak - has anyone just added a bit of padding inside the shoe on your own?
What would be a good model for walking, running, and casual? I'm thinking of getting either the provision 7, the paradigm 6, or the via olympus and I can't decide which one to buy! I don't have a store near me that carries all of those versions of altra shoes and I already have the torin 6 and lone peak 6 and I love my torins but last time I ran a 5k in them my feet started to get sore so I want something with a bit more cushion. What do you recommend? My feet are strong and don't need much support, but I need that cushion, bounce, and comfort. But, I don't like TOO much cushion because I feel like it slows me down. At the same time I like the rocker on the via but not the cushion, and I like provision because it has minimal support and a durable outsole, but it has a little less cushion. I like the paradigm for the cushion, but its a lot of unnecessary support. I can't chooosseee all of them are goooooddd
Great info. I'm up in Canada so can't come see you, but I've just started looking at Altra shoes as a possibility. I've been wearing Asics Kiyano for quite a few years because I have high arches that need support... anytime I wear shoes without high arch support, my instep really rolls inward and after a couple hours my knees and lower back are seized up and sore. So I'm unsure if going to a zero drop style shoe is wise. I'm 50 and fairly active , and want an all around show that can handle a little of everything. What would you suggest? For me Olympus, Paradigm, and Lone Peak stood out maybe? I really don't know.🤔
Of the options you listed, the Paradigm would be the best of them. The Paradigm is a stable, max-cushion road shoe using its guide rail system. The shoe tends to run wider than other Altra shoes. We have found the lower-drop shoes to be the way to go if you are having those issues. If you are not quite sure about the zero drop, Hokas are a 5mm drop option. Try either the Arahi 6 or the Gaviota 5 from Hoka. The Gaviota is a maximum cushion option with plenty of all-around stability for you. Hope this helps!
@@RunMoore ok great! Thanks for the reply. As with everything these days there's just too many options and it's overwhelming to figure it out! I have never heard of Hoka before. Out of the two brands which do you like better?
I love the Escalante shoe, but after listening to your review of the different shoes and their uses. I am thinking of the of the Lone Peak. The only thing that confuses me is I know the Escalante is a totally flat shoe no arch. Does the Lone Peak have a arch?
Nooo, you need to keep the Escalante Racer! It's the best. I just bought another pair today because I'm scared I won't be able to later, even though I hate the blue yellow colour combination...
Which shoe would you recommend for narrow heels. I get a lot of toe cramps and If I had more room but the back of the shoe was small that would be great.
I have the lone peak which keeps the foot from pushing forward. I tried the cushion Paradime and was rolling out and foot got pushed forward. Need that heel drop to be lower.
I have been wearing the paradigms and i am neutral but for some reason when i tried the torin one year ago, my medial foot was sinking in as i walked. I have had the paradigms for a year but recently i am having pain at the top/side of my meidal arch. Not sure if this is from the guard rail or because I need a wider fit Altra. I recently tried the escalante because i want to transition to barefoot shoes. And i had no issues with my foot sinking in with the escalnte 4 I am likely going to buy escalante but do u think my pain in the paradigm was from the guard rails? Or did i just tie the laces too tight and the upper is squeezing my foot or something?
I used the escalante 1 and provision 4 and were great. Roomy, comfortable, wide...but then i bought a provision 7 and was narrow stiff at midfoot, the arch was uncomfortable...now i dont know what to buy since my references were escalante 1 and provision 4... i dont want to keep returnig shoes... advice?
Thank you for the informative review. I am wearing Torin 6 size ten and half and am very happy with it. When I order Torin 7 should I order the same size or not?
Those darn Outroads are AT LEAST a full size small in the 12 mens anyway! 11 1/2 LonePeak, 12 Olympus, 13 Outroads, 12 Mont Blanc all fit my 2 feet equally...
I over pronate and am pretty flat footed. Sometimes i choose a wide to compensate for this. I never feel like I get the support I need for my feet to not hurt? Which should I buy?
I’m making a switch from Nike free run flyknits and have been struggling with how stiff and rubbing a lot of these uppers are. What’s something that’s closer to the feel but still has zero drop and wide-ish toe box?
100% agree on the original fit! Stick to it Altra! That's why we reach for Altras when customers are finding fit issues in other brands!

Separate note: I love the build quality of Altras trail shoes and as much as I love the fit of my provisions the build quality just isn’t there compared to my Cliftons which they replaced.
Wow. Great video
In my experience the slim fit (Rivera and Outroad) are 1/2 size smaller than typical Altra by length.
I have found exactly the same
Great information! Is the Torin Wide wider than the Via?
Very informative…thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Very useful, thanks
Glad I could help!
Escalante racers were the best for hot weather
Great video. All the info i was looking for.
Altra is going to miss the mark of they continue to get rid of the thing that gottem to the show
Great, video, thank you❤️
I appreciate the support!
Can we pls get an update on the altra shoes and how they fit?
Sure thing! We actually just recently shot an updated video for the Altra fits! Here's the video. ruclips.net/video/QHrZUGhQV3U/видео.html
You should start a subsidiary in The Netherlands, so I could order my Altra shoes with you 😂
Altra heaven❤❤
Very good video.
Tempo and Torin 6 press painfully down on my big toenail - not any longer for anyone having more than skin-and-bone toes.
Agree we need more original fit, i not even considering altra in slim fit
While Altra doesn't plan on releasing more shoes in an Original Fit Toebox, they do have plans to release more of their models in a wide!
What's the difference between Standard fit and Original fit? Is it just the overall width, or is the shape different, too?
Good luck!
@@RunMoore Thank you so much for time and knowledge... 👍 I will at least try to find a pair locally (WNC) to try on.
UPDATE: I did try a pair of Via Olympus in size 12. They fit great (and feel great). Thanks again Steve.@@RunMoore
@@davidkiser5250 Glad we could help!
Which Altra shoe was the road to trail shoe again? Thanks for the informative video, just got my first pair of Olympus 5’s. Loving them so far!
outroad. it should have been intuition atr (instinct was wide enough to be cat as og for sure, i worn int as a male and even that was wider and much more lux and lax feeling than the torin male which felt/still feels like a race shoe lol)
Cool, thanks for that!👍
I need the extra width…I have a bunion on my right foot and tried the paradigm 6 but it was too narrow on that foot unfortunately.
Thanks for the breakdown. Their website lists the Outroad as a slim. Do you have different info from Altra directly?
It's definitely slim fit
Which Altra shoe is good for walking on the road or work in a hospital? Any suggestions?
Out of the two brands which do you like better?
i also wish paradigm came in wide! love them but metatarsal area ripped out..
Be on the lookout for later this year. Altra has plans to release the new Paradigm 7 in a wide!
Always enjoyed the Lone Peaks. And the rear pull tab, But the 6 was terrible couldn't get my pinky in the pull tab. Why do they do this?
Which one for standing on concrete at work all day? I'm fighting plantar fasciitis in my left foot.
I love the Escalante shoe, but after listening to your review of the different shoes and their uses. I am thinking of the of the Lone Peak. The only thing that confuses me is I know the Escalante is a totally flat shoe no arch. Does the Lone Peak have a arch?
Yes, loan peak has some arch support
Torin 6 wide!! easy to forget
When you say the Via Olympus is super wide, do you mean the regular D width fits like a 4E?
Nooo, you need to keep the Escalante Racer! It's the best. I just bought another pair today because I'm scared I won't be able to later, even though I hate the blue yellow colour combination...
Which shoe would you recommend for narrow heels. I get a lot of toe cramps and If I had more room but the back of the shoe was small that would be great.
I have the lone peak which keeps the foot from pushing forward. I tried the cushion Paradime and was rolling out and foot got pushed forward. Need that heel drop to be lower.
What about the solstice, where does it fit?
So basically whats the best altra shoe for running performance with wide toe box, not for trail, for road, and more like the original fit?
I have been wearing the paradigms and i am neutral but for some reason when i tried the torin one year ago, my medial foot was sinking in as i walked. I have had the paradigms for a year but recently i am having pain at the top/side of my meidal arch. Not sure if this is from the guard rail or because I need a wider fit Altra. I recently tried the escalante because i want to transition to barefoot shoes. And i had no issues with my foot sinking in with the escalnte 4
I am likely going to buy escalante but do u think my pain in the paradigm was from the guard rails? Or did i just tie the laces too tight and the upper is squeezing my foot or something?
I used the escalante 1 and provision 4 and were great. Roomy, comfortable, wide...but then i bought a provision 7 and was narrow stiff at midfoot, the arch was uncomfortable...now i dont know what to buy since my references were escalante 1 and provision 4... i dont want to keep returnig shoes... advice?
Thank you for the informative review. I am wearing Torin 6 size ten and half and am very happy with it. When I order Torin 7 should I order the same size or not?
We have found the Torin 7 to run longer compared to the 6. If you are a size 10.5 in the 6, we suggest you try a size 10 in the 7.
@@RunMoorethank you
Those darn Outroads are AT LEAST a full size small in the 12 mens anyway! 11 1/2 LonePeak, 12 Olympus, 13 Outroads, 12 Mont Blanc all fit my 2 feet equally...
Is the Escalante Racer being discontinued?
Will continue as an online exclusive style.
I’m using and fit with skechers wide fit size 46. What size I should’ve use in altra?
Wish you would add info about high or low volume feet.
Does the escalante 4 is like the 3 (wide wise) original fit?
I over pronate and am pretty flat footed. Sometimes i choose a wide to compensate for this. I never feel like I get the support I need for my feet to not hurt? Which should I buy?
I have moved over to VivoBarefoot, still making real barefoot shoes with a wide range of styles.
Sometimes my brain wants a new shoe like Nike but my feet always want ALTRA 😂❤
Do you recommend lone peak 7 or lone peak 2 all weather or Olympus 5 ? That will help prevent achy calves and ankles for those long runs
I wear 10.5 in the Torin 5 and I'm looking to try the Provision 6. The Torin 5 fits perfectly so should I size up or stay at 10.5?
I’m making a switch from Nike free run flyknits and have been struggling with how stiff and rubbing a lot of these uppers are. What’s something that’s closer to the feel but still has zero drop and wide-ish toe box?
If you were the Timp 4 and looking to buy the Longs Peak should you size down a half size since the Timp is not as wide? Thanks
So I got some torin 6's for resale. My question is they both say M width on the tag so is the wide one still an M or is it a D or an E?
I want some with a higher drop 6,7,8 maybe even more
I am a heal striker ( i dont want to change that)
I don't get how lone peak6s where too narrow for me in te toebox and superior 5s fit pretty much perfectly.
