This was originally shown on Channel 4's "Midsummer's Night Tube" in 1984. I was blown away by it because its the 1st time I've seen the dancehall experience on British TV, back when Channel 4 was proper! They used to show this stuff. Now the channel's so middle class its unreal! Man, I miss those days........... :(
This is absolutly exclusive reggae footage. It's taken from a documentary from Jools Holland about reggae, it was shot in '84. Jools Holland was, is still one of the BBC's most known presenters. He's also an exellent musician! The whole docu is great, with features about Lee Perry, Dennis Brown, Wailing Souls and some others, a classic!
Yellowman, Josey Wales, Peter metro, Burro Banton, Ranking Toyan, Billy Boyo, Eek a Mouse WHAT A KILLER LINE UP!!!!! Too sad I was 8000 miles away shitting my diapers back then :'(
RIP Massive dread, see his work continues, make a contribution for the kids of Jamaica please... type in 'massive dread this is massive' to see the you tube video blessed
If all the people now who wanted to go back to 1985 and be there to see that line-up (myself included), they'd need a 50,000-capacity stadium! Seemed like Eek-a-Mouse mashed-up the dance...
Indeed I hear ya...it almost sounds like babies fighting over a bottle. "until the color of a man's skin is of no more significance than the color of his eyes, then we shall know true peace" - B Marley.
This is part off a documentary i saw first on dutch tv back in '84 or so. Had the massive dread in my head since then, what a tune. Never thought of seeing it back again. Thanx videooverload and youtube.
its kinda angering that none of you give recognition to massive dread, hes so good that i have to watch this video ahundred times a day just to hear that short song he does. no one else reggaes like him man.
MUURDAA EEKA! Everyone can go home now. THE YELLOMAN SONG IS "Wreck A Pum Pum" NOT "run cum cum" which was a later version. Wreck A Pum Pum - Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt (c)1984 Greensleeves
If you look at 1:47 you can see that Eek a Mouse was not even on the bill for the night...people must have flipped when he got on stage! They would have been the top two djs then...I'm guessing this is about 1984? (can anyone confirm?) I would have loved to be there. Thanks for the post...respect

@steveffc I have the docu on old VHS tape, but am not a wizzard in taping it over digitally. Quality is ok, though, not mint but watchable. Docu is great all over, with features about Perry, Dennis Brown, Wailing souls, Black Uhuru aso.
I WOULD'VE FUCKING LOVED TO BE THERE NEXT TO SPEAKER!....ALSO...THIS VID. MAKES REMINDS ME OF A STORY JOKE I ONCE HEARD...A ARMY GUY, A HORSE JOCKEY , A HUNTER AND A WITCH DOCTOR ENTERED A TALENT DHOW ONCE AND....MUCH LOVE TO THE OG'S!
i have been looking for the name of this massive dread so bad, its definitely his best song and its a style of reggae you never heard, doesn ANYONE know the name of it?
Where can I get the rest of this video? The sound man was great with terrific echo-chamber manipulation. The backing songs preceeded the thin computer generated sound of the late 80's. Wicked
the reggae we have today can never compare to what it was before. Irie
Chai ---> massive dread is singing his version of a lonnie donnegan tune called 'battle of new orleans'
