Easy Fix for LOUD shifters on the Fanatec Mclaren GT3 V2 Wheel

- The Mclaren GT3 V2 wheel is SO good but it has one divisive trait - the shifters are bloomin' LOUD. Luckily, it's one of the easiest fixes imaginable and reversible, too. Cut the clunk with some felt or foam pads fixed to the back of the shifter rocker as shown and everyone around you will thank you for it.
Obviously, you do this at your own risk and I do not accept any liability whatsoever if you break something. If everything you touch crumbles, best leave it...

If you don’t want to scratch up your wheel, remove the connecting hub on the back. You then have access to the bottom of the pin. Use a small Allen/hex wrench to push it through.
What if I wanted to scratch it up as a warning to other Mclaren wheels?

Those loud thudding shifters are amazing though! Its also a deeper sound not just a high pitch click. Love them as is tbh.
Thanks for sharing. I used the fuzzy side of a piece of velcro. Worked like a charm. I was able to get the pin pushed up just enough to add a few pieces of electrical tape around it to prevent scratching. You'd never know I was in there.
Hi. Thanks a lot for this very practical hint. I play , among many other sims, F1 2021, since two weeks and found that I never had to use the shifter so often then in this game. Hence your vid helped. What I also did, was to replace the , already quite worn out, hard-rubber protectors on the two shifter pins ( opposite of the switches ). I used two small , round pieces of flexible magnet-foil ( for tabletop miniature bases ) for this. As for sound reduction and a smoother shifting, I used two stripes of middle-hard cell-foam ( used also in studios ) of appox. and 5mm width, 15mmlength and 8mm hight on doublesided adhesive tape. So that the space in the corners ofter the orange shifter rocker is completely filled. Due to the flexible nature of the foam, it's resistance is , of course, a bit limited but due to it's volume, the sound reduction is more then enough. Back on the wheelbase and in the game, the shiftig feels now very natural, smooth and it is very quiet. I hear only a distant "click" sound. Cost : 5 minutes time plus maybe 1 EUR for the materials....
For some reason mine only has the clunk on the right side upshift, while the left one is a lot more muted and actually get to hear the "click" switch. Any way you know to fix that? It's a brand new wheel as well.
This is exactly what I was looking for. I didn't have any sticky back felt so doubled up with some cushioned plasters (band aids) and immediately it makes a difference. I'm glad I did it too because one of the rubber stuck on dampers had come loose so I was able to recentre it and also gave the QR a tighten up too.

Typical problem I didnt know I have, but youtube did. 2nd daybof ownership and already did it. Its engineered/designed in Germany and we're only pulling out a pin here, not worried at all
Experiencing issues with downshifting. Either it wont do it, or get stuck in it. Removed the pads for now, seems to have fixed it

Just received my wheel today,bought plastic tools ,was all ready to take the pin out until i rolled up a little material tape/gaffa and slid it between the shifter and bump stop.After getting the thickness rite this solved it completely also ,nice review tho.

Really helpful, thank you! I ended up using a 3M double-sided, two pieces on each side, back-to-back for extra thickness, with the side facing the steering wheel with the plastic still on (so doesn't stick). Super tight and no more loud clicking noise.
Thanks, glad it helped - this seems to be something they have improved/fixed in later revisions of the Mclaren V2 as I bought a fresh one recently and it was much, much quieter from the get-go

Great vid. Really helpful 👌. Ended up using plastic tools you would use on a car to not scratch. Worked a treat.
I just did this using rubber window insulation tape. Measured on the Decibel X app, before was 80.1 db after is 75.8 db. Meaning, it's a lot quieter.
A bit late to the party but THANKS for your video! I wasn't sure if and how I could dampen the loud *clack* of the shifter and wasn't sure whether to send it back within the first 14 days or not. Thanks to your video and the comments I could figure out how to very carefully take out the bar, put some thin, generic felt pads like you did in the same spots (I cut them out with a better fit, no clue required) and now I can shift down quicker, it's a lot more quiet and feels even better. Awesome :)
Great to hear, mate - absolutely understand why you'd be thinking about sending it back. Seems to be a marmite situation, some people love the ka-shunk of the shifters, other people not so much!
Glad I did this, because the glued on black caps had come off and was extra clunky one side, reglued and I velcro taped mine just took the edge off it which is nice instead o being a loud ass clunk
"I've had my pin out about 6 or 7 times now and there are little nicks and notches on the pin"... Sounds painful mate.😳 Your rig isn't designed for that! Those are cooling holes!!

There is a 0.5 mm thick rubber washer between the magnets. If you replace it with a 1mm thick rubber washer, the shifter becomes much quieter, but the positive feeling when shifting worsens. Of course you will lose the warranty.
That washer quietens the noise when you release the shifter. But to dampen it as you push the shifter down, I actually added a tiny piece cut from of a rubber band stuck on to a piece of electrical tape in between the button on the circuit board and the inner magnet. If you get it just right it can make the movement less clunky on the way down as well :)

Brilliant video Danny! I have one on preorder but I was worried about the shifter noise from watching reviews of it, I too have a family to consider and quite often they will be sleeping while I'm racing.
By the looks of it your mod might just alleviate that worry, I will most likely prefer the shorter travel anyways. :)
Cheers Kjell, it's definitely much, much quieter than stock and the magnetic action isn't gone. It's now as quiet as any other wheel so if you were worried about the noise (rightly so for many people) then this should get you around the issue. Let me know how it goes for you.
Good totorial. I additonally added some more foam and sticked to the weheel itself between wheel and shifter what reduces the noise even more. I have a really sensitive girlfriend. 🤣

Great video! I think I bought the wrong type of felt pads because its too soft and the travel is much less than your version. Will have to experiment with different materials.

yeah but the formula wheel does not have magnetic shifters
anyone else noticed the buttons on the new v2 are rattling like crazy. the v1 buttons didnt at all.
I've heard of people with that complaint, it might simply be a bad batch because I just don't get that with mine. Report it to Fanatec using their support system on their site so they know there's a pattern.
I’ve received my wheel a few weeks ago and it seems like fanatec has changed their paddle shifters. They’re extremely quiet!

My wheel has just come out of warranty and I've never liked the loud clack. I've got some slighty thinner felt pads which I'm going to add today. Only change I might do is to use insulation tape and some mini side cutters to pry out the pin and cause less visible scuffs. What is the pin like afterwards, is it slightly looser, is it okay? Does it need a tiny bit of grease on the pivot point?
Wilko do really thin felt pads if you want none of the noise but all of the travel still.
I've received a brand new Mclaren GT3 wheel and they seem to have much, MUCH improved the shift feel and reduced the noise. Might just be my imagination but I am sure it's much better than the version I had when I made this video!
@@dannyleeracing suppliers do this all the time. It wouldn't surprise me if the price of a certain felt pad increased so Fanatec used a different supplier instead or their subsid who is building them on their behalf. I use equivalents all the time when ordering for work.

The small labels on the steering wheel, do they come included or that's something you have to buy separately?
The small black labels are included with the wheel, but the multicoloured button caps are sold separately in the button cap and sticker set

It can vary greatly - If you're in the UK this really does depend on workload at the time it hits the border. Mine took about 2 weeks after dispatch.

Are the wheels paddles far from the grips? Is the wheel good for smaller hands?
The paddles are somewhat far away from the grips, further than average I would say - for smaller hands the Formula V2.5 would be perfect

Unfortunately microphones tend to normalise the noise so it's really hard to tell, but it's a big difference when done right. I was ready to lob it out the window 'til I put some cushioning in behind the shifter

BTW comparing magnet shifters to spring shifters is just wrong...
Luckily, anyone who owns the McLaren wheel and is happy with how the shifters are as standard will not feel the need to make this modification. For me this was done out of consideration for those around (and below) my sim racing rig.
And the McLaren GT3 doesn't feel like traditional magnetic shifters.
I own both the Advanced Paddle Module and a Sim Racing Bay BB Ultra, both have aluminum magnetic shifters, and they all sound more tactile and less obnoxious than the McLaren GT3 shifters. This is one of the cons of Fanatec using a hollow injection mold plastic shell with an aluminum rocker arm for a shifting mechanism. Aluminum levers slapping hollow injection mold plastic shells is not a pleasant sound and it's definitely not "correct" to call it magnetic shifting. If Fanatec designed the rocker arm to have magnets fixed to it, and did magnet/magnet contact point, it would sound better and feel better.

This doesn't ruin it. The magnet itself snapping the rocker arm into place is the "magnetic shifter feel". The loud clunky noise is what a metal rocker arm hitting an injection molded plastic shell sounds like. If you ever use actual aluminum magnetic shifters, you'd know they don't sound or feel anything like the McLaren GT3.
I just got my McLaren GT3 V2 wheel, and to my great surprise the shifters are really silent maybe they changed something in the design? anyway, I'm happy with it as it is, and definitely won't break the warranty...
I think they improved the design since this video was made! I have one from a recent batch and it's way quieter
