  • Who’s qualified to treat your OCPD? Am I? Episode 028
    One of the most common challenges I get via this channel and the ocpdonline.com website is whether or not I’m qualified to be giving advice and help. And that seems like a fair enough question to me. Fair enough that I feel it deserves it’s own video response. But that doesn’t make for the most compelling content, os lists discuss who really is qualified to diagnose and treat your obsessive compulsive personality disorder. If you have OCPD, should you be seeing a therapist, a psychiatrist or maybe just consulting self help books? Maybe the answers will surprise you.

    I agree with Larissa, the conversational format is awesome. Glad to see this upload too, since I'm trying to work my way up to therapy...but haven't found anyone I can afford yet. Not bring able to afford care is pretty frustrating

      Gerg Skoorb I’m sorry you’re experiencing the financial aspect of care. It’s a story too often told. I’m passionate about the healthcare travesty that exists in this country (I’m assuming you’re American). I work with a campaign to help poorly or uninsured people find affordable care. There are some out there who work on a sliding scale and they tend to be very good MHPs. Maybe that’s because they care more about people than money.
      Don’t give up. Find someone in your state who is a health advocate and see if they can help you find options.
      As for working up the nerve, I totally relate. Personally I have found getting into therapy has been helpful.

      Gerg Skoorb thanks for the feedback. I'm glad to know that the format is working for some people. I'm sadly in a similar situation to you in regards being able to attend therapy. The money isn't the issue as much as I'm not in one location long enough to see a therapist. I believe I would benefit immensely from seeing someone, but I do what I can for myself in the meantime. In one of my videos I link to some articles that offer up some things you can do on your own that function as treatment methods. I'll link to that below. I also put together a month long challenge that has helped me, and I'll link to that as well. Thanks as always for watching.

    Darryl, so glad you are back!
    It was a nice surprise this morning, seeing that you uploaded a video. A few things...
    Hmm...I don't think you take a lot of time getting to the point. Interesting. Your format is rather...conversational, I think. So, sort of easing into the topic with anecdotes or thoughts or humor (your "cliche" moments and missing pillow truly made me laugh out loud) actually seems kind of relaxing to me. And no, that could NOT have been a 30 second video (laughing again). You gave really great information about all the people out there who practice therapy and work with the mental health population. I am a nurse and work with these people every day and even I get totally confused with all the alphabet soup! Your descriptions were helpful and succinct.
    Okay...I am quite SHOCKED that your information was deleted from that forum. And I can tell that the experience was rather...hurtful to you. Well, maybe that word is a little strong. I am not a big internet surfer, though I know that forums often have their own peculiar rules, but isn't the point for people to share information and provide support? You were offering your own perspectives, insight, and personal knowledge and were shut down and I just don't understand it. You make it very clear that you are not a mental health professional and you ALWAYS encourage people to seek help from a professional, as well as do their own research and soul-searching. I don't know. I just don't get it. I am sorry that happened to you.
    Anyway, sorry this is so long! But, it was a great start to my day seeing your video. I look forward to many more!

    • @chlinkink7433
      @chlinkink7433 5 лет назад +2

      Larissa Elf Agree. Darryl, I don’t know the details of the forum situation but I hope you can view it honestly and then put it in the right perspective by asking questions I often find myself asking after something like that. ‘Where was I wrong? Where was I right? What did I learn?’

    • @OCPD_support
      @OCPD_support  5 лет назад +1

      Larissa Elf so nice posting a video knowing that I'll hear from all my regular viewers. I hope you're well. Thanks for the thoughts on the forum situation from you and Chlink Ink. It stung a little to be sure. I'm used to it from OCPD resources. And as I'm carving out my niche in where I can post and try to offer help, it's completely fine. But I really wanted to get some information out there to the OCD folks and I was cut off at every turn. If an estimated 1% (and that's the lowest estimate) of people may suffer from OCPD, and there are less than 100 RUclips searches for OCPD per month, I would say that the general public are being severely underserved. I find that quite upsetting.
      I appreciate what you had to say about the conversational quality of the videos. That's how I intend them to be. It drives me absolutely crazy that I can't address the viewer directly by looking directly into the camera because I'm following a script or outline. After all of this time producing videos, I've finally found a portable teleprompter that will work for my purposes. So hopefully I'll be able to afford it in the near future. I think it will drastically improve the quality of my content.

    I have been watching each of your videos and I have found them to be so, so helpful. As someone who struggles with OCPD, it is nice to hear this information from somebody who has lived experience. OCPD is hardly ever talked about and I think it is so important to be raising awareness about it. Your videos help me feel like I am not alone. I would love to see you do a video about how OCPD can manifest or become more prominent in young adulthood. I noticed my OCPD worsened after I left for college because I was no longer in a highly structured environment like I was in high school. Thank you again for doing what you do! :)

Thank you!

    • @OCPD_support
      @OCPD_support  5 лет назад +1

      @@kater6873 absolutely. I'll continue to touch on these things in future videos. With diet and exercise I'm treating myself as a giant experiment. Which is essentially what we do when we go through the process of finding the right medications with a health professional. Only, barring allergies, this is a lot easier on our bodies and minds.
      With food, eating healthy helps to give me the energy needed to win the battles taking place in my mind daily. I take supplements (B12 for example) and I play around with doses to see which ones give me the most energy and clarity. The same with food. More carbs, less carbs, more protein, more healthy fats and so on. Keep going until you hit the right combination. I haven't found the perfect fit for myself yet, but I believe in the power of a good diet and I will continue to keep experimenting.
      It's similar with exercise in regards to energy and clarity. But exercise is a good way to work out negative thoughts. It's a good way to work out thoughts in general. If I have a anxiety causing thought I can just push myself harder in the gym until I have to focus so much on my body and what I'm doing, that there's no room left for the thought. I don't particularly like the gym. The thought of going actually adds to my anxiety. So I try to go earlier on in the day to get it over with. And that way for the rest of the day I don't have to dread it and I reap all of the benefits of going.

    Happy New Year to you. Good video. I appreciate you addressing the fact that the internet can have a lot of bad information and to be wary or at least cautious. It’s always good to be objective as possible when reading or watching anything dealing with mental health. Critical thinking is almost a lost art. I will say that I have come across a few posts in places by MHPs that were disconcerting. One specifically truly seemed to have an ax to grind regarding OCPD’s. I guess she had a bad experience. So my suggestion to people is to consider the human element of every person (MHP or not) to remain objective.
    I’m in a severe depression right now. But I am doing some smart things and believe in time they will soon bear fruit. I’m spending time in prayer every morning and eating much healthier. I’m contemplating starting a journal (which produces anxiety for me for a number of reasons- failure, privacy, my feelings, reality). *The last 2 in that parenthetical phrase were supposed to be a little humorous.*
    Last year I realize I experienced a great deal of loss. I certainly gained some very good things also. As for losses, I lost my best friend of decades in a cruel series of betrayals, nearly lost a child to a serious disease, learned that some close family members were abused sexually, found out a close friend has cancer and the prognosis is not good and lost a very good therapist. This is tough stuff. Very intense losses. The kind that change you.
    Gains have been that I have found sobriety in two major areas of life. Life changing ones and knowing that I could remain sober (not to substances FYI) despite the difficulties makes me feel strong also. My wife and I are getting along better, my career is uphill and I learned a lot and some OCPD symptoms are milder.
    I don’t make resolutions in a new year. I just set some positive goals and start putting action to good ideas. Looking for a new therapist is high on the list (as are the health goals I mentioned).
    Well, thanks for letting me lay on your non-MHP couch (I have your pillow, btw). You’re awesome and have helped me in a unique way that I’ve really needed. Thanks!

    • @OCPD_support
      @OCPD_support  5 лет назад +1

      Chlink Ink absolutely on your first point. It's amazing how many MHPs are in therapy themselves. We are all flawed and have our good days and bad days. I'd be really curious to read an article though by an MHP that had a particular ax to grind.
      I'm sorry to hear that you're in the throes of a severe depression. It sounds like you're doing all of the right things to get yourself back out of it. On the one hand it can be overwhelming thinking about how cyclical all of the states of mind can be, but on the other side, shouldn't we be getting better at navigating them, haha.
      Speaking of cyclical, it sounds like 2019 is already proving itself to be less challenging than last year. All of those things you talked about are awful, but they are a part of life. In the moment having everything go wrong at once is a nightmare and a fog that we can't see our way out of. But in hindsight, with how life works it can be a relief to have all of those things handled at once. Like ripping off a bandaid. It's during the good times that we need to lay the groundwork to ensure we are strong enough to make it through the tough times. Seems like I'm not out of cliches. However, your comments and the comments of others are very helpful to me and I have much gratitude for them. Here's to a brighter future.

      Chlink Ink Really very sorry you are having issues with depression. I can relate...last year was difficult and this year is beginning very badly, in fact, at the moment I am in a very dark place. I appreciate hearing about things people try to help them through it, I need some ideas right now. I did make a renewed commitment to therapy this year, so that's one thing, also "broke down" and started medication, perhaps the hardest thing I have EVER done. I keep toying with the idea of a journal and just need to set aside time each day for it, I guess. I do get regular exercise and eat well, though my appetite has been so bad due to the depression. I wish you the best. Somehow it is comforting to know that others feel a little how I feel, and encouraging to hear how others are working to better themselves.

    Yeah, the biggest concern is that apparently many therapists don't have much experience treating OCPD, wouldn't know what to do with it if they were to encounter it, or simply wouldn't recognize it for what it is to begin with. Then there's the question of whether they're really going to do therapy, or if they're just going to slap a label and a band aid on you, and ship you off to the insurance company. For this very reason, it seems that the kind of therapists who DON'T take insurance may end up being the best options in some cases. Basically, don't write someone off solely because they don't take insurance.

    • @OCPD_support

      Christine Spell I understand the struggle. I, along with many others, are so focused on finding a therapist that has the most experience treating our particular disorders, we end up skipping over therapists that might have been a great match. A good therapist will be constantly evolving the sessions to match your needs. It's much, much more important to find a therapist that "feels" right. Someone with whom you feel comfortable or maybe it's your personalities that are a good match. I wish you the best in your search.

      Alaa I'm sorry to hear that. Did you have a question you wanted to ask me?

      OCPD: My Life In Debris actually I did see almost all your videos since a year maybe! My question is, Does OCPD affect GPA? Because I was intelligent in high school but in college everything have been changed to the worst. Forgetfulness, concentrating and understanding was poor. The problem is I know I can be better but I don’t know why my performance was poor!

    • @OCPD_support
      @OCPD_support  5 лет назад +2

      @@Alaa-ft4is the short answer is yes, but like all things, it's more complicated than that. Procrastination due to a fear of failure can cause undue stress and poor performance. Stress from dealing with a personality disorder can affect memory. Concentration can be difficult due to trying to tackle too many things at once. It would be hard for me to know which parts of your OCPD are likely to be giving you a hard time, but there's a strong likelihood that it could be affecting your GPA.

      AvexOffline I have a video that's way overdue, but it should be finally coming out next week. I'm halfway through editing it and you might find the information helpful.

    Perhaps the OCD folk became obsessive and compulsive regarding their content on their forums. 🤔

    Video actually starts off at 4:34, anything before is absolutely useless.

      JD D spoken like a true person with OCPD. A fine example of lack of tact.

      @@OCPD_support Yeah, anything critical towards you is a demonstration of lack of tact. I point out a fact, and your response is to attack my character. Embarrassing, learn to take criticism.

    • @OCPD_support

      @@RaynesX do you have any idea how difficult it is for me to make these videos? And I get criticized all the time and I try to take that criticism and improve my next video if I can. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. What you did wasn't criticize, it was being a dick. It would have been easy to say that "he really only talks about personal stuff for half the video, so if you want the actual content skip to 4:34". I stand by my original response to you even more so then when I wrote it the first time.

      Kaitlyn R somehow I was never alerted to this comment. Thank you for the kind words and I'd love to cover the topic you recommend in a future video.
