Wow. I thought I had all of Kansas’s music but I’d never heard this. The Wall is one of my all time favorites. So interesting how he used that “outtro”. Steve’s voice is magic!
and just have to say its mindblowing to just think this was before anyone had ever heard or even thought of The Wall... so amazing to hear that familiar instrumental part and remind yourself how early this is.. wow
I thought I had heard everything Kansas ever did until now. This Rocks. Thanks for the photos. Takes me back to the high school days. Kansas is still my favorite... Another 35 years please!
This song is hauntingly beautiful and I absolutely love everything about it. If only it made it onto an album. I have listened to it countless times trying to make out as many lyrics as I can and this is what I've got. 1st verse Here I stand behind these walls (unsure) I'm confused and so afraid But I can see no end in sight 1st chorus (unfortunately it is very hard to make out what they are singing, save for "love is a dream" at the end) 2nd verse This illusion haunts my life There's little joy in things I do I want him to set me free I gave my soul away to you 2nd chorus Soak it in and truth will spell Where is all the love right now (unsure) Love is a dream (The Wall instrumental) 3rd verse We pretend to conquer all Living lies and fantasies Blinded by our own charade We chase the rainbow 'til it falls 3rd chorus Wait until you're old and grey Watch your lifetime wisp away Never know what words to say But love is a dream A dream Just a dream Just a dream Just a dream
This is another example of "Leftoverture" being the perfect name for the album! Aside from the well known story of "Magnum Opus" being a collection of "leftover" parts, The Wall was made up from a "leftover" part of this song!
Hoch Auditorium is also where the Kansas Jayhawks used to play basketball until Allen Fieldhouse opened in 1955. The band Kansas also played a concert in Allen Fieldhouse in the spring of 1981.
Man, I couldn't disagree more but that's OK. To each his own. Song For America is not only my favorite Kansas song but my favorite song period! Ever since I 1st heard it in 1975! Lamplight is amazing but I think they made the right choice for the title of the album. Lonely Street is by far the best Walsh penned song and one of my all time favorite blues/rock #'s. This is a great song and it puzzles me why it was never used! Every time I start to figure out the words to this I end up quitting.
Heard the bad news last night. We are all praying for you my friend !! Kerry, Jesus will not take you yet ! You have more to give us !! Rick as soon as the image at 3:11 came up I fell apart !! That hit me hard !! Great video my friend. Dave.

Man...thanks for posting this. I've never heard this song before and I really like it. A couple of observations.....I wonder if the middle part, which went on to become the ending for The Wall, was written for this song? It seems extreme to cannibalize a song for another unless they just didn't think this song worked. Also, Steve Walsh's vocals sound effortless. People that never saw Kansas live in the 70's don't have a concept of his vocal abilities and his acrobatics. There was never a keyboard player that jumped and kicked and moved and put on a show the way he did!
Why this song was not recorded for the first Kansas album, I'll never know. It would have been a top five single at the most. Hell, Bringing It Back was tailor made for Rock Radio at that time.
The misfortune of timing! They were still the opening act for the most part until Leftoverture so most of their sets were 45 minutes or so and had to be pared down. This one just didn't make the rotation. Most of their songs were 7,8,10,12 minute diddys so the set list was short even for this hour and a half show!
I think rickyon would agree with me that the Kansas family of bands have a body of unreleased material more impressive than the entire body of work of most other bands (by the way, I think Lynyrd Skynyrd comes awfully close in the amount of great unreleased material.)
A person does not have to be deceased for you to make a tribute to him. Do you really think that I thought that Kerry had passed away? I assure you I was on top of the situation with Kerry every step of the way. You should think about changing that username.
You may have to dump this account and get another one. I don't think that you can change the name. Is there anything on this account that you would lose?

some great moments in this tune, Walsh sounds awesome
wow, love this song! and the bit that became the 'the wall' outtro... perfect
I love you Kansas since 1974 I have fowlled every where, k
It is amazing to hear how so many parts of this piece ended up being Kansas songs.
Dave.
This song is hauntingly beautiful and I absolutely love everything about it. If only it made it onto an album. I have listened to it countless times trying to make out as many lyrics as I can and this is what I've got.
1st verse
Here I stand behind these walls
(unsure)
I'm confused and so afraid
But I can see no end in sight
1st chorus
(unfortunately it is very hard to make out what they are singing, save for "love is a dream" at the end)
2nd verse
This illusion haunts my life
There's little joy in things I do
I want him to set me free
I gave my soul away to you
2nd chorus
Soak it in and truth will spell
Where is all the love right now
(unsure)
Love is a dream
(The Wall instrumental)
3rd verse
We pretend to conquer all
Living lies and fantasies
Blinded by our own charade
We chase the rainbow 'til it falls
3rd chorus
Wait until you're old and grey
Watch your lifetime wisp away
Never know what words to say
But love is a dream
A dream
Just a dream
Just a dream
Just a dream
Thanks!
Thank you. I listen to all these old Kansas demos and concert audios trying desperately to make out the lyrics to obscure songs.
This is another example of "Leftoverture" being the perfect name for the album! Aside from the well known story of "Magnum Opus" being a collection of "leftover" parts, The Wall was made up from a "leftover" part of this song!
Hauntingly beautiful! Almost makes me want to cry like a baby!
Kerry Livgren is a genius, and i will pray for him!
This song is an absolute gem. I honestly can't believe it never made it to an album. Thank you so much for sharing this!!!
Thank you for posting this. I never knew about it until...five minutes ago!
Nice nugget of history. Thanks for sharing it.
I wish it were possible to give this more than 5 stars.
Glad that at least a portion of this song was used. Kerry & company are always amazing. Come on, October. I want my DVD!

I inspire to play like Kerry
Thanks Marlo!

Yes, it's VERY encouraging. Let's hope the progress continues so I can see him play live some day!

Wow, this is cool! I never heard this song before. At least, not half of it anyway. 8-)

Very true. Gotta love the word-merging!
Thanks Adam!
Kansas is the best, always have been and always will be.😂
The Wall... Brilliant!

Kerry the only one 😘
Not that I know of. This is pretty early Kansas. It was probably written by Livgren before he hooked up with this final version of the band.
Nice song, too bad they couldn't find space on their earlier albums to include this one.
You're welcome!
WmW!!!
Does a studio demo exist for this tune?
( Kerry's son) he's doing better now thankfully... but not out of the woods.
THANK YOU FOR THIS RARITY!!! ARE THE LYRICS FOR THIS ANYWHERE AVAILABLE FREE?!! THANKS! GOD BLESS!!!
You're welcome.
Do you have another unreleased live song like Another Slant?
I think rickyon would agree with me that the Kansas family of bands have a body of unreleased material more impressive than the entire body of work of most other bands (by the way, I think Lynyrd Skynyrd comes awfully close in the amount of great unreleased material.)
Did this become the wall?
The middle section became the outro for the Wall, almost note for note.
That is partially the music from The Wall, perhaps before it was called The Wall.
Yep!

How come this song was Release?
