  • When I teach my students this concept, they are blown away by the results. Why? Because when you learn the swing backwards, it improves everything else in your golf swing so much faster. Learning the golf swing backwards sounds really different but it will get you playing the best golf of your life. By working on what happens after impact with the golf ball, you effectively change other pieces in your golf swing to make good impact happen. The best part is that this is done without thinking about a million positions or swing thoughts. This golf tip is one of the best ways to improve your ball striking.

    I am Tom Saguto, PGA Member and founder of SagutoGolf. Thank you for visiting my instructional page where you can find how to get on the fast track to improving your golfing abilities. Whether you are a seasoned golfing veteran looking for a quick swing tune-up after an on-course emergency, or a beginner just looking to get the most out of your golfing experience, I am here to help you achieve your golfing goals.
    My mission as your swing doctor is simple, to help you maximize your enjoyment in game of golf. Because, let’s face it, golf is a hard game.
    My philosophy is wholly based on the student having a fun, meaningful experience in a frustrating and complicated game where potential lifelong golfers either quit because it is too difficult or that they experience some form of swing-related pain or discomfort. I mitigate these problems by focusing entirely on the student’s needs and goals while teaching a golf swing method that ultimately takes stress off of the common pain areas of the swing.

      By the way, a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built.
      Have you considered the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step from setup to finish. You don't need the flexibility of a Romanian gymnast - or even of this far less pliable golf instructor - to execute this swing and experience great ball striking. I hope you'll give the school some thought.

    I’ve been watching Tom for about a year now. Each one of his videos gives you one piece of the complete swing puzzle. Taking a really bad swing that has years of repetitions and muscle memory built in takes a bit of time to change. Early, I made progress, then regressed, made more progress, regressed etc. Now, through steady application of his techniques and simplifying the swing, I am swinging easier, smoother, and hitting the ball farther with more accuracy. While not a finished product, a 6 stroke drop in handicap has got me enjoying the game like never before and am on course to be a single digit handicap before the end of the year. Life is too short to play bad golf. 🙂

    Very good stuff. Here's something for your consideration. I started playing golf in 1957 before all the technology came along. Some of the basics back then for a full swing were these: A 90 degree shoulder turn. Shaft at top of back swing parallel to ground and parallel to target line. Hip turn about 45 degrees. Full wrist cock. Try to keep head "still" as possible. I'm pretty sure these basic ideas still apply. Keeping all of this in mind, the goal is to return "almost" back to address position with hands about the same distance from your thighs, spine angle about the same and a downward strike since the ball is on the ground or IN THE DOWN DIRECTION. Weight automatically goes to front foot. I've had very good success teaching my students to simply think "up and down with the arms while turning the upper body back and then all the way around to the left. Keep the hands in front of the body and don't manipulate the club face. Do this while turning the upper body around to the right and then all the way around to the left at a speed which you can control. They learn good contact within ten balls. We then work with the grip to adjust direction. For some a neutral grip works perfectly and for some a stronger grip eliminates the shots going right. To begin, I have them make the best swing they can with their eyes closed with the idea of finishing in perfect balance. They don't hit a ball...just make a "pretty" swing. If necessary, I place them in the correct position or as close as they can come to it depending on their physical make up. The final step is to make that pretty swing and have the ball get in the way. They are encouraged to do what is comfortable and not anything like a cookie cutter swing. An outright beginner who has never swung a club is hitting high draws in less than one hour. It's amazing to watch and it's so simple. Obviously, I'm not advocating THIS is the only way but this method has really worked for my students.

    Been working on this very thing (basically the wedge drill in Saguto school) for a few weeks to stop turning my hands over and turning hips too soon. I started over with the basics of S/T again. A swing key for me is to start with biceps outward in setup and arms together. And then to make sure the bicep on trail arm points to sky on follow through as I keep my arms straight. I am now getting a more consistent point of contact, and hitting the ball better than I ever have. I had to get used to feeling that I was swinging very in to out in extreme manner, but when I saw the club head squares up consistently I began to trust it. The swing is very stripped down and simple and I can repeat it. When I do not keep my arms straight on downswing and turn hands over or turn body too early- I hit thin or slice, but it is becoming more uncommon. Thanks Tom. - Mojoman

      Well done, Mojoman!! That trail arm biceps key is an excellent one for the entire motion. Nice job building that in, and also for recognizing the cause of those occasional poor shots. You're definitely on your way towards taking ownership of your swing.

      I would definitely recommend finding one swing that resonates well with you - whether it be the system I teach or some other method - and then putting your blinders on and just sticking with that. Otherwise you will likely be stuck in the vast abyss of confusion and frustration as you'll find yourself constantly playing 18 holes of "golf swing" rather than truly enjoying a round of golf.

    Hi Tom
    Thanks for your great tips and lessons. I appreciate the simple techniques and minimal components to manipulate. One question, as a taller player, I can't get over the feeling that the higher clubs (7-sw) are 'short'. My clubs are +1/2" but I still have this thought which sometimes leads to over extending or chopping etc. What do you suggest to get over this? Cheers

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Год назад

      I'm glad to know that you are enjoying my instruction!
      Are you certain that your clubs are properly fitted? Is that +1/2" of additional shaft length enough, and beyond that are your lie angles correct? That's where I would begin before any type of swing intervention, particularly if you are hitting the other clubs well. Beyond that, just know that while the swing is pretty much the same throughout the bag, there are some naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some driving range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: ruclips.net/video/o0xscMyN3v8/видео.html

      I don't see why you couldn't use an impact bag with this drill if you so desire. As for the flying elbow, try keeping a balloon or a large head cover or a ball around the size of a grapefruit between your elbows as you swing. Here's a lesson from the archives on "Hogan's Arms" that may also help: ruclips.net/video/lfckFcF7Mbo/видео.html
      Beyond that you may wish to consider the LagShot clubs that you may have seen me speak about and demonstrate, as these can help resolve a vast array of issues including yours. Here are a couple of the videos where Lagshot is featured:

      I think these are awesome training aids for resolving a host of downswing sins, particularly because you can hit balls with them and receive instant feedback. Simply incorporate the LagShot into your practice routine and it will greatly assist you in grooving the proper motions and downswing path. Here is a link to the LagShot website - lagshotgolf.com?ref:sagutogolf - and if you do end up deciding to purchase be sure to enter the code SAGUTOGOLF at checkout for 15% off.

      HI Edward,
      This lesson video from my channel's archives may address your question: Pro Wrist “Release” (Unhinging): ruclips.net/video/zw7Rzstq4gY/видео.html
      Grip pressure is something that is very unique to each of us, which is why conveying personal "feels" in this regard have led so many golfers astray. For example, a 2 out of 10 “baby bird” grip to a strong guy like Sam Snead may equate to an 8 out of 10 to another golfer. We definitely don't want that handle swimming around in our hands because we're so loosey goosey that we can't control the clubface. A secure grip and soft arms are what we're after here. That prescription will certainly resonate differently for different folks, but the key is that our grip pressure should give us complete control of the club while not introducing swing-killing tension that prevents us from properly executing the motion and/or robs us of speed potential. Finding that sweet spot is a highly individual thing, and it is critical to consistently blissful ballstriking.

      Yes - that is a fine drill, Carlo, and it's one that I do use and teach. In this particular situation, however, we are ingraining the "feel" of that post-impact position with both arms straight and our weight forward to reverse engineer the downswing and achieve those positions. So it's a little different in terms of what we are working on even though the end result may look the same.

    Hi Tom! Could you please make a video that shows what the body positions at various points of the golf swing look like without the tilt?
    As you’ve mentioned before, the tilt in the golf swing complicates the movements for a lot of ams.
    If we could, for example, see how the arms are supposed to be positioned at the top of the back swing without the tilt and rotation of the body, we’d better understand the position we’re aiming for with our arms/wrists. So this would be like doing a normal swing to the top of the back swing, holding it there, then just standing up straight so we can see where the arms/wrists ended up.
    I hope this makes sense. Thanks!

    • @SagutoGolf

    Tom, seems like in most videos your ball position is pretty far forward. Is that accurate to say?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Год назад +1

      Hi Justin,
      Oftentimes the camera angle can skew the viewer's perspective of ball position. While you do have some leeway, in general once my students and members show some level of proficiency with the swing I suggest that they migrate to a stock ball position that is in the middle of the stance for short irons, two balls inside the lead heel for middle irons, and creeping more forward for the longer clubs - the farthest forward being even with the inside of the lead heel for the driver (with the stance width increasing as we move from shorter to longer clubs). From there they can make incremental tweaks to see how different positions affect impact quality and shot shape. For example, as you observed, my personal preference for the shorter clubs tends to be a position that is slightly forward of prescribed.
      Cheers!

    As usual very thoughtful and helpful input for my swing. However, I found that this under emphasizes the role of the wrist and may lead to some golfers losing power by stiff arming throught the ball. That is, not releasing the wrist. Definitely your suggestion is good. But I think its incomplete because you don't show the release happening where the wrist naturally releases and turns over. See "Left arm action" on Steve Pratt Golf on youtube. Could you marry the 2 suggestions. I think this would be more compete.

      Hi Mike,
      I'm glad you enjoyed this lesson. Please understand that there is only so much I can cover in a particular video without overloading the viewer. I have plenty of channel content on the wrists including this episode on how to properly release them: ruclips.net/video/zw7Rzstq4gY/видео.html
      It is important to understand that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a comprehensive, sequential learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards owning this swing. Hi Bryan,
      Assuming your striking the ball well, then you probably just need some more extension through impact. The hips - which have maintained a downward inclination from the start of the swing - need to release their tilt in order to shallow things out through the zone. Try the feel of tucking your butt under your belt while pushing up off the ground with your legs - more advanced moves for sure, but as a 6.5 I'm pretty sure it's within your competency.
      By the way, if you've not already joined, have you considered enrolling in the online school and taking your learning - and your game - to the next level? That's where - in addition to detailed lessons and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step from setup to finish - you'll find diagnostic tools for identifying/resolving swing and ball flight issues when they arise, plus advanced level courses on shot shaping, power and distance, and much more. So many folks across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result. Many of worlds best golf’s will load some on the interior of their trail lag and shift some. But we are talking about very hi level athletes with training around the clock. For most people, we aren’t athletic enough or have the hand eye coordination that it takes to sway off the ball and then shift to meet the ball with perfect timing.
      The first fundamental is contact. Without solid contact, nothing else really matters. Weight forward throughout the swing is the easiest way to make solid contact….

      One has to use both legs to shift, to turn, to push, to move the pelvis, to load, to create torque, well, it's the two supporting posts of your foundation for every move. It is not the finish weight position on the left that I am referring to.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Год назад +2

      The real question, however, is do we *_need_* to shift into the trail side and push off the trail leg in order to have a consistent, powerful, and body-friendly motion that produces a repeatable, predictable ball flight? The answer to that is a resounding "NO"! If you've loaded into your front leg then it is fully poised for action in that powerful extension through impact, with the trail leg playing a supporting role in this process. There's no need to precisely time and gauge any forward shifting in the downswing in order to perfectly recapture our swing center if we don't shift back to begin with.
      Having said that, there is certainly some tolerance in this swing system for some temporary measure of rearward "pressure shift" during the takeaway in response to the weight of the arms and club moving backwards, but this is absolutely not necessary.
      Cheers!

    The biggest problem with what you want people to do is .... THEY PHYSICALLY CAN"T DO IT... the avg golfer is either too fat or too inflexible for this to work... My son is a body builder and I am trying to teach him to golf, his body is so thick and so much muscle he can't make a large enough turn without moving his head and hips... You have got to help people figure out how to stretch their body so hey can make a turn without moving their head.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Год назад

      If that were a "problem" then my school wouldn't have so many members in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - who are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. (Testimonials here: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews ) It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built.
      If your son can tilt his upper torso to the left and to the right and can flex and extend his spine, then he can execute this swing. It's just a matter of learning the proper way to do it. That's what my online school does in a comprehensive, structured, sequential platform.

    How the hell do you get that much swing speed 🤬

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Год назад +2

      I don't do any specific speed training. It's a matter of relinquishing control of the motion to the big muscles, loading the various power accumulators in the swing, and then just trusting it and letting it go.

    Got it and I know you have addressed issue with driver being same swing as every club. So that means you are hitting with a descending blow.
    If that is correct, then what is the driver tee height? Am I missing something? Thanks in advance

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Год назад

      Perhaps with the exception of folks with slower swing speeds - or those Long Drive participants teeing it extra high and hitting maybe 1-2 balls out of 10 onto a 60-yard wide "fairway" - the path is still ever so slightly down. In fact, believe it or not the PGA Tour average with the driver is actually minus (e.g.: downward) 1.5 degrees - nearly level - and it should feel level - but slightly down nonetheless. (Here is an article on Ping’s website addressing this topic - ping.com/en-us/blogs/proving-grounds/optimal-launch-and-spin#:~:text=According%20to%20Trackman%2C%20PGA%20Tour,85%25%20ball%2Dflight%20laws ) Thus, I do not advocate trying to hit up on the ball, and efforts to do so due to erroneous advice has caused many an amateur significant issues with their driver...
      As for tee height, the equator of the ball should be approximately even with the top of the driver head,
      Cheers!
