Now that was very well explained and informative. Thanks Tim for the vid. Old mate was able to impart this information very well in an easy to understand way. You can also see this company doesn’t cut corners or use cheap parts to achieve more power and better performance. Some were commenting on the cost of this upgrade but as you have said, you get what you pay for and I’m sure this customer will get many thousands of trouble free km’s out of the Hilux. 🍺

That was really interesting, Tim. I have a 2016 Fortuner with the same engine, but auto, and I tow a mid-size van. I have just got a transmission oil cooler, and I reckon I will look into that intercooler after watching this video. The mods that can be made never stop! Its important to look after the donk, but I still gotta save some money for camping gear when we eventually get back down to the high country...

As I'm now able to spend the extra coin on such an upgrade, I'm curious as to why on other channels, (Ultimate Diesel Tuning) they achieve very similar power outputs, albeit, slightly lower torque with just an ECU flash/tune. Why spend upwards of 4k on the turbo/intercooler?

Hi, thanks for your good question. A/ I have not seen results from other companies but its important to compare the actual gain in power and torque, not the peak power numbers as all dyno's read different. B/ We tune for reliability as our primary factor, while we could make more power it may come at a cost in long term reliability. We do not compare what we do, nor are we trying to make more power than the next guy. C/ The larger turbocharger gives the 1GD a much broader power band, this is impossible to see when just comparing a peak power / torque number but in terms of driving the vehicle, its much more flexible and usable. D/ The intercooler will not do anything for increased power, however it does give much more consistent power, again not flash on a dyno graph but much nicer on the road.

    hello tim.
i saw on one pickup truck made by nissan, they had heated and cooled seats.
They oviously had to have some thin wires, to contain the cooling componants, so it would be nice to see such technology on intercoolers, controled of the fermo fan.
as the air blows through the intercoolr, it blows cool air that way.

I've got a fairly stock ZD30 CRD, what order would toy start doing modifications to get EGTs down and Power up (I have a catchcan already).. Thinking exhaust, turbo, intercooler etc, but in what order given it will likely be 1 mod a month? I'm guessing worth doing the tune last when all the rest is done.

    • @dylanmoncrieff8180

I'm curious to know where the terminology N70/N80 came from with Hilux.
I have worked for Toyota for 21 years and this is not something we use as Toyota employees. Is this something that people have just made up? Or where did it come from?

I'd be interested to see an flow diagram of air going through the intercooler. To my way of thinking, most of the boosted air would flow directly between the inlet and outlet, with almost nothing flowing through the other 80% (taking the path of least resistance). The 80% would still soak some heat, but surely an intercooler would be better with a diffuser spreading air flow through the whole unit?

    • @mattjackson4541
      @mattjackson4541 4 года назад +3

Hi, in some applications flow diverters are an advantage, more where the tanks are very long, or where the tanks are very skinny where a reasonable taper cannot be built into the tanks. In this case, you can see a good taper is built into the cast alloy end tanks to help transition the air flow. Air will happily travel to the top of this intercooler as it will be at lower pressure and as the pressure builds up in the lower, more direct tubes, the air will travel and distribute through the top of the core. This style of intercooler has been used for a very long time in the top tiers of racing, OEM vehicles including supercars and interstate 500hp trucks where some have 1200mm high cores and the inlet and outlets at the top.

You can easily get 30kw and 150nm gains out of a dead stock manual n80 hilux without even pushing the factory turbo. With an intercooler, highflow turbo, exhaust and tune you should at least make a 50kw/200+nm gain safely. Was pretty much a waste of time bolting all those bits on this one!

All for 117kw, I'm gob smacked at the lack of performance. The little 2.8L isn't suited for towing unfortunately.
Without any engine mods you can get a safe tune to around 105kw at the wheels on these hiluxs
I tossed up all the dual cab utes before settling on the Ranger, more expensive I know, and the Toyota fan boys will harp on about reliability and unbreakable yaddah yaddah yaddah. At the end of the day I definitely feel I made the right decision. 108kw at the wheels stock. Did a few engine mods and got an aftermarket ecu put in and I'm 140kw at the wheels on 33". Looking at going an upgraded turbo aswell which claims up to 160-165kw at the wheels with all the other mods I've done.
For towing i love it, for daily driving i love it, for 4wding I love it.
